Yup. Jailbroke it yesterday with Pwnage, and it was working fine.
I made a phone call around 2am, and halfway through the call the phone freaked out, the call dropped, and all of a sudden it said "This phone cannot make or receive calls" with a no service message on the top left.
I tried restoring original firmware, and I got the 1604 error. I tried the custom firmware, same error. Tried on both a PC and a MAC, i've put it into recovery mode successfully and DFU, and I've also tried reinstalling firmware without the SIM card in, but nothing has happened.
I don't know what to do, and I'm running out of ideas. I can't afford a new phone either...
Hey, hey. I'm sorry I called you "guy".

If you get Error 1600 from iTunes (or if you see in your log a failure to prepare x12220000_4_Recovery.ipsw), try: mkdir ~/Library/iTunes/Device Support
if that directory already exists, remove any files in it. Then re-run PwnageTool.

If it doesn't do anything at all, and you're confident that it's borked to hell and back, take it back to ATT or Apple and exchange it. However, if they're able to get it working and see the custom boot icons, you're boned.
Another thing you might be able to try if it's stuck in DFU mode is downloading one of the older jailbreaking tools (Ziphone or iLiberty+) and seeing if either of them can boot it out of DFU. Whatever you do, don't try to use them to reinstall any firmware on your 3g....just boot out of DFU.
I was reading over at modmyifone.com where some people stated that removing the SIM card before doing a restore fixed the 1604 error. I don't know if the SIM is accessible on the 3G, but if it is, you might try removing it before the restore. If it works, then you should be able to pop the SIM back in once it's done.
tried this too.
Were you able to get it out of DFU, and if so what happened?
we'll first of all try to restore to different firmwares. or better enough go back to itunes 7.5, delete in windows since its easier to go back to 7.5 and try restoring there, once you get another error, which I'm sure you will Install iliberty or ibrickr, and try to load up the phone when the itunes logo pops up, even if its the damn pineapple. Let me know what happens.
It's stuck in recovery mode, not DFU. only thing that happens when i hold power down is the pineapple comes up and then the preved steve jobs.
And the only way to get tthat off is to hold off power and home.
PLEASE ensure you are performing DFU correctly.
Force Quit "iTunes Helper"
Delete files in "~/Library/iTunes/Device Support
Open iTunes. Does your iPhone appear under devices? Hold both Power and Home for 10 seconds...release Power count 10 seconds...release Home. Should appear under Devices and say it has discovered an iPhone in recovery mode.

I'm doing DFU mode correctly.
I know that you probably are doing DFU correctly, but I just want to drive home the point that when you're in DFU mode there is NOTHING displaying on the screen of the phone. It should look like it is off. If you're seeing ANYTHING on the screen when you're trying to restore, then you aren't in DFU.
Just buy a new one. Use the bricked iPhone as tester and then resell it in the future once all hack programs to be near flawless.
But I don't want it to be jailbroken anymore. I want the regular firmware back.![]()
