Everyone seems to get their pants in a knot when Spaz posts something. And every single thread I have read by Spaz has helped me out a lot. There are 1000's of posts on this form, and finding the post within a thread that has the information you want, (even with the search) can be a pain. Spaz puts it all in the first thread where I need the info. While this might be a little outdated of a post to people who wait on line on iDay, but for the rest of us mortals who can't afford a new phone that often, this is the first opportunity we are getting to actually buy our first iPhone or look at our second. So having this list right at the moment, is perfect.

This is an informative forum, and I think Spaz always puts out good information. Isn't that the point of Macrumors?

- Gaps between the metal bezel and screen can cause light leaks
- Almost all the iPhone 3Gs I've seen have the glass raised on at least one side

So, is this problem widespread then? If the screen weren't so unbalanced, then that would probably get rid of the dust problem. I know the 8GB iPhones on display at various AT&T stores are almost perfectly made.

I just now saw that a spec of dust somehow made it's way to the very right of my screen. It's not exactly on the display itself, but it's just sitting there. Laughing at me, lol.

I've owned 2 iPhone 3Gs with Light Leaks and I've seen plenty other light leaks (while I was getting my iPhone replaced for the 3rd time I looked at 2 others). Also, dust got under my iPhone 3G glass, but because the 3G is so easy to take apart, I was able to get it out. However... I managed to scratch the front of the glass screen while I was doing that somehow.... it sucks, but I live with it.

I have another thing to add that I forgot about before...

On the iPhone 3G... When you open Maps and get your location, it turns on GPS and GPS will stay on until you close the application. There's no way to disable this behavior. However, on the original iPhone, it only uses a little bit of cell data to update your location based on near-by cell phone towers. This is a more efficient use of battery power. Also, GPS on the iPhone has proven to be not that accurate and A-GPS is usually fine for most things. I just thought I'd mention that. Leave maps open for a little while on your iPhone 3G and your battery will take a serious hit but, not on the original iPhone.

keeping it in his pocket. There are some points of the plastic body on the 3G that are waaaay too thin, just look at the plastic around the headphone jack.

Yeah... you don't even need to mistreat the iPhone for it to crack. It's ridiculous. So far I haven't seen a single iPhone 3G that didn't crack.

Yeah, it is pretty sad. I've had 5 replacements and they have all cracked, I've given up on trying to get one without cracks. The one I'm using now was actually cracked when they gave it to me but they refused to replace it.

I really really hope we get aluminum back.

Well, I'm practically in the double digits of 3G replacements but only a couple of them ever had cracks so they are out there.

Honestly, I love my iPhone 3G, but the build quality can definitely be a bit...inconsistent. And of course, when I get the "perfect" iPhone, something crazy goes wrong. Take the last one, for instance. No light-leak, cracks, or faulty mute-switch. Just a great 3G. But one morning I wake up and it just won't turn on. So, I get a replacement and it has the worst light leak I've ever had on an iPhone. It's kind of ridiculous.

But, all that being said, I still love the thing and don't regret having it for a bit. It's just a good thing I live 5 miles from an Apple Store and work even closer to it. If I had to drive an hour+ or send it out every time, I might be singing a different tune.

I really hope some semblance of the "Brick" technology comes to the iPhone. Going plastic was dumb, IMO. I want a solid aluminum iPhone in my hands this summer. My reception was perfectly fine with my 1st gen iPhone so please, Apple, ditch the crap plastic.

^ agree. return to aluminum!

to the original poster: excellent read. I have to agree after going through a handful of 1st gen and 3G iPhones. Although I only have iphone 3g in my possession, sold my 1G months before July 11th and it paid for my 16GB and I ended up with change!

I might keep iPhone 3G even after getting 3rd gen just as a backup/for fun.

Not sure yet :D
