New York.
It sucks, but it is what it is. My question is... The person turned it off, yet I still can’t track it? I thought iOS 13 + U1 Chip would offer better locating abilities.

Also, I wish it would at least still show the last location beyond 24 hours of being offline.

Not blaming anyone but myself, but it sucks that the person wouldn’t do the right thing and just give it back. They can’t use the damn thing. I thought of filing a police report, but probably nothing they can do.

The off-line find capability is in iOS 13, so you are dependent on other people having iOS 13.x on their devices to find yours. At this point, that will only be a fraction of the user base. Give it 3-6 months and the net will be much more complete.

Sorry that happened to you.
Always file a police report.
If it was stolen from your home..check with your home owners insurance about coverage?
If it was stolen from you vehicle...check with your car insurance (police report will be required) to see if it will be covered.
Hope this helps!

If you paid with a credit card, you are most likely covered for Theft and Damage coverage. File a police report for the phone and try to file a claim with credit card. You should be able to get about $500-1000 back depending on your card company.

That really sucks. If it's iCloud locked they will only be able to sell it for parts. Keep an eye on Craigslist.

They can short circuit the device internally and ask for a warranty replacement.

A less risky way would to be create water damage and pay for a OOW replacement.

Both methods result in a clean iCloud device.

It was stolen from an Uber! Ugh.

Sooo frustrating. Don’t know if it was the driver or another passenger.

Ouch. How did it happen?

Fell out of my pocket in the Uber and I noticed a couple of minutes later. Had to use a friend’s phone to sign in to my account and call them. No good.

I’m on the iPhone Upgrade Program and put it on my Apple Card of course Lol, BUT I do have AppleCare+ With Theft & Loss.

My iPhone will come up in Apple’s system as “reported lost and lost mode is enabled” which means it can’t be serviced luckily.

Is no proof of ownership required?

Apple Stores use what’s called “Mobile Genius” and the phone is registered to me and a message would pop up saying that the phone is in Lost Mode and has been filed for Theft/Loss so they can’t do anything.

How can they do this when the phone is fried? If the phone is fried there’s no other way to know the serial number.

Apple Stores require an IMEI on the phone to provide service. The SIM tray has the IMEI on it. But you can order a SIM tray on the Internet with a custom IMEI on it for $5. See where this is this going?

Oh yes there is other way to know the serial number. IMEI is also engraved in the SIM card tray, so if the phone won't turn on at all or the screen is severely damage, then they can use the IMEI number on the sim tray and that will pull the information on that device. As long as the sim tray isn't damage.

Had issue with my iPhone 8 where I dropped it and the screen shattered and got separated from the phone. Apple Genius pulled out the sim tray and entered the IMEI number to bring up serial number on that device.

Of course you have to make sure that the SIM card tray hasn't been replaced.

The serial number isn’t only accessible when the phone is turned on. If the phone is opened it’s in there too. And yeah as well as the SIM tray. If they do order a custom SIM tray then I guess they could potentially get the phone replaced.

Semi related question....

Can you upgrade AppleCare + to AppleCare + with theft and loss?

Yeah, that is unfortunate. And law-enforcement can’t do anything, it’s a simple theft case, which they file, they don’t track stolen phones anymore, they just simply don’t have the expendable resources available to invest in. The only thing by filing report, is it does show something on file that you have the phone listed as stolen (In the small chance it would be turned in), otherwise there’s really no trail history of you reporting anything stolen, but I probably would, just given the nature of the overall value of the iPhone.

Considering I called the Uber driver while my phone and the passenger that took it were still in the car, I feel like there’s no point in me even reporting it stolen. The guy knew what he was doing. He turned it off when he got dropped off. I mean maybe he came to his sense after he realized it’s useless, but I doubt it.
