my poor iPhone 3GS finally died. how to proceed if i want a 5?

the phone that lasted through everything - a 2 story fall onto concrete, a snow drift, the on/off button breaking completely off, the home button working 1 out of 10 times, case cracks that go from the docking port to the camera... finally took its final tumble and it's done.

i've been waiting for a 5 and want a 5. i also want to lose the least amount of money all-in.

with a new K: iPhone 3GS $49, iPhone 4 $199/$299 + $699 for iPhone 5
without a new K: iPhone 3G $200-250(???), iPhone 3GS $350-400, iPhone 4 $500+

anyone in similar situations? so mad right now....

I would say to not get an iPhone right now because you'll want to save your contract upgrade for the next generation one. Get a little prepaid popper phone and sit it out until the iPhone fifth gen comes out.
 
as an addendum, i'm about to go to europe for 3 weeks, where i won't be using my phone as a phone, but i would like for the flights (iPod) and also the no-data-roaming applications that still GPS you and such things...
 
Since no one else has asked the obvious....but how the hell does your phone have so many accidents? Are you using it to play fetch with a dog? Seriously though, is it just a lack of a case or something?

haha. i'm clumsy, but also hate cases. (if i bought one for the interim period i may actually case it to preserve resale value.) i'm not really nice to my technology, generally with the understanding i upgrade every year so it doesn't get to this point... but i got stubborn about the white iPhone 4...

do what i'm doing, i accidentally broke my iphone 4 but i have an upgrade effetive 10/19/11 for the iphone 5, so get a prepaid go phone and have them activate that with your sim as a temporary phone.

Ok try this

Step 1 make a Apple Appt.
Step 2 tell the genus you are a clumsy dummy hope he take pity and exchanges it.
step 3 if step 2 fails pay the $199 to get a replacement 3gs. this will not change your plan so you can upgrade to the 5 if you like
Step 4 Buy a Otterbox
Step 5 wait for the I5 or what ever it is.
Step 6 if you get the I5 you you can get it in contract 3gs are going for around 150-225 on ebay so you will get most of your money back.
Step 7 Buy a Otterbox

I would get accidental insurance too if I were you.

Damn, that's one hell of an iPhone. Take it to an Apple Store. Maybe the genius will laugh at the extensive damage that they'll hook you up with a replacement one for free.

i just called the apple store and said i broke my iPhone 3GS and that i was looking for an out of warranty replacement that will not use my upgrade and they said the only way to do that is pay for the price of the phone - 449 for 3GS, 599/699 for 4.

Fallow the Steps!!!! this is why I gave them to you. :p

Make a Appt,don't call you are more likely to get pity or help. have you ever seen how busy Apple stores are. ;) I know people that have there iphone driving over with a truck and got it replaced for 199. just be nice when you go.

BTW I love that you counted how many times you dropped it!
 
See if you can get a cheap one, no point getting involved in a new contract until the 5 is out

You have to make an appointment and go in to the store, as stated before. You may get lucky and get a free replacement, if you have a nice genius.

alright. i'm moving across the country, well, tonight, so tomorrow i'll hit up a NYC store and hope for the best. $199 would be great.

The only fault I see is that 3GS are going for 150-225 on ebay now, once the iPhone 5 launches, the 3GS prices are going to plummet :eek:

Plummet is a big word the 3G are still going for $100-$150. 2G about $75 if he takes care of it and doesn't drop it another 37 times I would still expect him to get most of his money back.. this dude needs the Otterbox.
 
man, every time i see a 3GS, i miss it :(

but to answer your question OP, just take it to Apple for an out of warranty replacement. $199+tax.
