Many thanks for your response Dprof. I really appreciate you responding and it has addressed my concerns somewhat and has me leaning towards the big beast again 😁.
You are very welcome! Let me know if you have any concerns I didn’t address. In any case, I hope you fully enjoy whatever you choose. The camera upgrades are going to knock your socks off whether you choose the smaller or larger 13 Pro.

I’m 75, also enjoy photography and procrastinating over getting a 13PM but somewhat concerned over its size and weight for everyday use as a phone. I’ll be making a big jump up from my 6 hence my concerns. Would be interested how your father gets on and his comments if any.
Don’t get the Max, just get the 13 Pro, the photo quality is the same but much more manageable size

Awesome. Looking forward to seeing pics and his reaction. About time we got an interesting thread started on here. Very few of those....

I'm a 72-year-old retired father (and grandfather) who has also been into photography since the 1960's when my dad taught me to process my own pictures in our basement darkroom. Have been using an iPhone 6s Plus since it came out and really like the size. Awhile ago, my trusty old Nikon DSLR died and I didn't want to spend the money on a new one since I don't use it much these days. Got a 12 Pro Max at release last year and have really enjoyed the camera.

I have also worked extensively with video and still have a pro Sony camera. Did a video shoot this summer and decided to use the 12 Pro Max as an extra camera, just to see how I liked it. The problem was that it really did not cut well with my Sony digital cinema camera because of the small sensor with its extreme depth of field, so I didn't use much of the 12 Pro Max footage.

Will be very interested to see how the new cinematic mode works in real-world usage on the 13 Pro Max, but I am surely not going to upgrade anytime soon. The 12 Pro Max is still a great phone and the camera is very nice, but it just can't replace a pro camera with a large sensor. Will look forward to new improvements in the coming years, the whole field of "computational photography" is very impressive.

That’s great to here. I bought my wife the 13 Mini even although her 8 was perfectly fine simply because she takes so many photos of our 1 year old and I want those to be the best possible pictures. I’ve gotten myself the 13 Pro and find myself taking more pictures as the camera is so incredibly good. She doesn’t want the Pro as it would be too big for her hands.

Last night she came in excitedly to show me how good night mode was and she wasn’t kidding, the outdoor pictures look amazing at night.

Kudo to the OP and his Dad - great story!

I think it's an underrated aspect of keeping up with phones, having the best available camera (and I'm classing 12, 13 and 13 Pro together here as modern, not *the absolute* best as such).

My kid is now 18 & just left for University, so was born pretty much at the emergence of camera phones & ubiquitous daily free-of-charge unlimited photography - I think I got the first Nokia camera phone in summer 2002 & they became widespread quite quickly from then. The first photos from Blackberrys and Sony Ericsson phones then were miraculous but lousy, small & grainy by todays standards.

I have Smart Albums in my current Photos library (2012 onwards) filtered by camera model & the jump in quality from iPhones 5 / 6 / 7 etc through to today is incredible. Those moments with your kids - and in some cases people - aren't coming around again, so get the best pics you can whilst you can (and LEARN HOW TO BACK-UP PROPERLY!! 😂)

My father, who when he was younger (before I was born and when I was a young kid) was big on photography as a hobby. He spent lots of money on cameras and equipment, even developed his own photos. After I got my iPhone 13PM, I had him watch iJustine's photography video (purely by accident) to show off the screen and speaker quality of the new iPhone. This got him very excited. A few days later he took advantage of a 400 dollar trade in deal for his iPhone 8 Plus through Verizon to get a 13pm at a discounted price (in the new blue, I'm actually jealous)

I came home today and he had bought a tripod attachment that holds a smartphone and had it attached with his 8plus toying around with it, telling me about all the stuff he'll be able to do when his new phone arrives. He was so excited.

He's 65 and retired this year and hasn't really found a hobby yet. I am so glad that Apple's excellent photography has gotten him excited about it again. I told him he would have to do much less tinkering now as well, and also that he will take better pictures than he has ever taken before. He said "I can't wait!! I'm going to have a blast!!"

Thanks Apple!

I told him "Now you can take pictures of sunsets until you sail off into one" LOL
Awesome!

That's exactly my feelings. My wife and I are young and in our twenties, when I'm in my twilight years with grandkids the things I'll cherish most are the times I spent with my family and I'll do that by looking at pictures and videos of them. I won't be saying to myself 'gosh I wish I hadn't spent $1000 on a phone'.

We actually had a very unfortunate event, my wife gave birth at home and all the pictures she has on her phone from that were lost after it broke. We have since started paying for iCloud storage after that and I regret not getting it sooner. $3/m to never worry about losing those pictures is insignificant to the benefit it brings. I'm also tempted to get a NAS to back everything up locally as I distrust large corporations and Apple's CSAM push has made me question storing things in the cloud.

Even if it was just $1000 to take great pictures I could justify it. But it's $1000 for this amazing device that I use constantly for everything and work so the value I get from it easily pays for the high cost.

Unrelated but the squared off edges are so nice to have again, I never liked the feeling of my 6S and the squared edges make it much easier to hold.

Agreed, I'm a 6'3" man with large hands and the 13 Pro is almost too big. I would never get the 13 Pro Max, it would be uncomfortable to use.

My wife got the 13 Mini and I'm jealous of it, the size is so usable and still has a massive screen. If I could get the 13 Mini with the 120Hz VRR display and telephoto lens I would. I'd argue it's the best iPhone Apple has ever made, I don't know why it isn't selling better.

it's tough to learn the hard way.

I have all my pictures full-size on both iPhone and iMac, both of which back up to iCloud. The iMac backs up to a NAS with Time Machine, and the Lightroom original RAW files on NAS in-turn back up one-way to AWS Glacier for less than £1 per month.

I bought my mom an iPhone 13 for her 75th birthday and she got it Tuesday, though photography is not a hobby of hers.

However, I miss film and darkrooms.

I told my father about this post, and we wanted me to share this with you. It's one of his favorite photos from back in 1985. It's a time lapse of a bridge going over a bay near us, it allows you to see the streaks from the headlights and taillights of the passing vehicles. He did a lot of tinkering to get it to come out this way.

(thought I inserted that in my last post, mod can merge them)

I am 68 years old and have always upgraded based on the camera meaning better. The max is too big for my pocket so I use the pro-not-max. I still have a couple of Nikons but except for big-zoom shots, the iPhone pictures are much better.

I am yet to physically hold either of the Pros but so far the Pro Max just seems to big for my use so I‘m leaning to the Pro also. Still procrastinating 😉🙄😁

If the size is a concern go for the smaller Pro. The cameras are the same this year.

I got the 13 Pro and I'm very happy with it. I'm a 6'3" man with large hands and it feels big to me, the Max is too big in my opinion. The screen on the regular Pro is already massive.

Just an update. His phone arrived this evening. I am going to help him set it up and give him a walkthrough when I get out of work tomorrow.

I think the new (new to him) gestures will throw him off for a bit.
Hope he enjoys it. I'm buying my parents 13 Pro's when they finally come to the US to visit in November as electronics are a lot cheaper than in Europe. They haven't met their granddaughter who's 16 months old now thanks to stupid covid restrictions.

I got him all set up. I bought him the apple silicone case in abyss blue, and my mom bought and installed a screen protector for him. I taught him all the 'new' gestures and he seemed to get the hang of it quick (because they're actually intuitive).

It's so funny though, I tried to show him how fast faceID was and I said "Just point the phone toward your face and swipe up" and he picked it up and held it like 2 inches from his face!! haha.

He's only had it up and running for about a day now so no photography yet.

That’s pretty cool. Do you think your dad might want to recreate this scene with his new camera? It would be fun to see the differences between the two.

I actually suggested that to him. He told me that the area where he shot that photo has been closed off to the public and that he doesn't think there's a spot where he could get a good angle on the bridge.
