iPhone 11 My review of iPhone 11 coming from X

Just to update my review after almost 2 weeks of use for anyone considering the 11:

- Battery life has continued to be phenomenal. I think I dipped below 50% at the end of only 1 day.

- The cameras are great, I have taken some really nice shots. I love using the ultra wide in the right situation. I do miss the telephoto BUT you of course can zoom in digitally.

- The LCD screen is a non issue for me. It’s bright even in direct sunlight. To me everything looks clear and sharp and colorful. I had the OLED screen on the X, so I’m familiar with it. However, I believe the LCD of the 11 is a quality screen, and really worth it to keep the starting price down.

- I still think that this is the right size phone.

- My only issue is that I can’t hear Siri in my car when connected to Bluetooth but I think this is an iOS 13 issue rather than an iPhone 11 issue.
What were your most used apps for 1 day that it did not dip below 50 percent as it not lasts more than 5 hours

The iPhone X served me well for almost 2 years. Other than the battery not really lasting a day anymore (even though i was still at 94% capacity), the phone ran great. However, I wanted a larger screen. But not the massive Pro Max screen. So that's why I chose the iPhone 11. Not to mention that the starting price is much less than the pro models.

My first impressions after a weekend of use:

- The 6.1 inch screen is really the right size. I honestly do not notice a difference between OLED and LCD. Maybe there is a slight difference, I just don't notice it in regular use.

- The processor is speedy. When I go to the battery screen under settings, my battery use comes right up. On the X it was at the least a few second wait, sometimes much more.

- The battery seems to be great, especially coming from an X. I used the phone all day Saturday, and it was still at around 60% when I went to sleep. Great battery life.

- I do kind of miss the telephoto lens. But the optical zoom is good. And I took some really great pics using the ultra wide angle lens. The new portrait filters are great as well, they look like studio portraits.

- I chose black, but it didnt really matter what color I chose, I put it right into an otterbox commuter case.

- If you are trading in an X it's really a relatively inexpensive upgrade.

All in all, it was an impressive first weekend with the 11. Let me know your thoughts on your new phones!
60% after an all-day use - that's excellent. And this is coming from someone who is not a high-intensive user.

Returned my 11 and went back to the X. No reason to move to the 11 at all for me. The 11 is not even a lateral move, slight downgrade especially with the screen quality.
To each his own...for me the battery and speed improvement and camera are reason alone.

Went from a 7 plus to the 11 after getting $300 from selling my 7 plus. The 11 is the perfect combination of price and power, before we get a true refresh hopefully next year. Not gonna spend $1000+ on a device that’s missing a lot of features I want in a flagship smart phone, let alone looking like the same device for the last 3 years. Bring on 2020, until then I’ll enjoy the 11 for $450 bucks and turn around and trade that towards the 2020 phone. If they turn around and give us S upgrades next fall, then the 11 will flex just fine until 2021 😉.

Apple gave me $400 for my X, so I got the 128gb 11 for $350 out of pocket. Couldn't pass that up!

With the A13, 4gb of RAM, better cameras, and better battery, I doubt a lot of people will agree with you. The 11 will outlast the X with updates too.

Some people really just prioritize screen tech above anything else, which I find peculiar.

I agree
I went to the XR and then the 11 from the X
The 11 from the X would have been more cost effective ;)

The iPhone 11 is a downgrade in screen quality and bulk (size and weight). If neither of those issues concern the buyer then it’s a great buy. However, making the argument that an iPhone 11 is better than an iPhone X is like saying that a brand new Toyota is better than a five year old Lexus. I wouldn’t buy that argument.

You do realize that everything you just said is subjective, correct? If a person’s eyes see the color reproduction on an LCD screen to be more accurate, less saturated, lack of yellow tint, less color shifting, etc...then there’s no argument to be made to them that OLED is superior especially if their eyes don’t perceive difference in resolution. And as for size and weight, how is that downgrade? Because you don’t like big phones? To someone like me who is 6’8” I find the regular Pro to be tiny. But I’d never tell someone that is a ‘downgrade’.

My mind is blown by the number of ‘adults’ on here trying so hard to justify their preferences through crowd sourced affirmation and even trying to pass off opinions as facts. And before you or anyone tries to suggest I’m an 11 user trying to justify a purchase of it, I own the Pro Max. If the LCD screen was wider I would take that over this OLED screen and all of it’s ‘mighty’ specs in a heartbeat. (My opinion)

Most people are not 6’8” and fall within certain categories for hand size, vision, hearing, and income. Those are the relevant categories, in my opinion, to analyze phone purchases for the average consumer. You would not be an average consumer.

Also, I mentioned in my post that if someone didn’t care about added bulk or the lower screen resolution of the iPhone 11 that they would not perceive the downgrade. Personally, I would not exchange my iPhone X for an iPhone 11 even if it was free. I understand that this would not be your point of view and that’s fine.

When you or anyone states something is a downgrade, you are not qualifying any specific user group. You are making a blanket statement that something is definitively inferior. Whether I’m 5’2” or 6’10”, it’s ridiculous for anyone to suggest the size of one phone compared to another is a ‘downgrade’. That’s pure opinion. I respect that you would not take a free 11 over over the X. That’s your right. Much like I would do the exact opposite. My issue was never with your preference, but with your use of downgrade as if it carried more weight than simply being your preference.

Most people, at least in the United States, believe that they are an average and middle class consumer no matter what the reality is. From a factual point of view, there is an average consumer and an average preference. That preference is going to be for the iPhone Xr and iPhone 11 simply because of cost. Remove cost differences and the average person would choose the regular iPhone Pro because of size.

This is a fact that I’m sure Apple has analyzed into oblivion. I believe that the lower end iPhones are actually inferior based on my use of many iPhones with LCD and OLED technology. Not only that but the build quality just isn’t there. That’s why I bought an iPhone X just six months ago. Do you not believe that there are objectively better products in the world that average people would choose if cost were not a factor? Do you think that the Xr and 11 are larger than the iPhone Pro by accident or by design?

Tried an 11 Pro Max for a week and decided to return it. It’s just too big and cumbersome. For people who like holding their phones with both hands at all times, I guess it’s fine. I used to have a 6S Plus for 2 years. I was actually fine with it, but I feel like the X size was better for me, so I’m keeping my 11 Pro, which I also bought.
Also, I compared my 11 Pro to my 11 Pro Max side by side for days doing different tests. Battery wise the 11 Max Pro doesn’t really have the edge over the smaller model. They both were losing the same amount of battery doing the same tasks. Maybe in some different scenarios the Max would really edge out the small one, but for web browsing they’re almost the same.
It comes down to personal preference, so I don’t think that other people would be able to give you some universal advice. You need to use it for some time to figure it out. For instance, when I was playing with it in store, I thought, “oh, I think I’ll be fine”. However, when using it for prolonged periods of time, my hand started aching. Also, the Max is too tall in my hand as well. I always need to re-adjust it feeling it might fall out of my hand. Carrying Max in my pocket was also a unique situation. In my case I found it stretching pockets up to the point when it started uncomfortably hitting against my body. While walking it felt like I had a book in my pocket sometimes.

This is a perfect example of what I mean. Would the above statement be considered subjective or the experience of an average user? By average I mean someone who is not 6’8”, has normal vision, normal hearing, and is middle class.

Having owned both the iPhone 11 and 11 Pro I can say with quite a large amount of qualification that, for me, the LCD is superior in quality to the OLED. You can take your OLED smeary, juddery scrolling and low light flickering and shove it. Motion resolution matters! Also the size for many people is the ideal compromise between the Max screenspace formatting (more words per line on this site for example) and the palmability of the 5.8". In the end I returned my Pro, not because of the extra price, but because in the 6.1" 11 I had what I perceived was a better phone.

You do realize that I could go cherry pick any comment as well where someone says the Pro Max is the perfect size and anything smaller is too small. These very forums have polls that have shown the larger number of people who chose to go with the Pro Max as opposed to the regular sized pro. I am going to go out on a limb and propose the theory that not everyone in the forums is 6 foot 8 lol. Now you can sit and say that the forums do not represent the average consumer and I will agree with you all day long. But don’t think for a second that just because someone is not a certain height, or has certain sized hands, that all of a sudden the pro becomes the default preferred size by the masses. The numbers thus far simply haven’t shown that.

I think the 11 is an amazing phone for anyone used to LCD or simply can't tell. If you're really used to OLED you need to pay the price difference not to go insane. 2x telephoto isn't a big deal, I take my SLR out if I need it.

If the next redesign has the £1000 ($1233) Pro model at 128GB and an 11 screen size with no bezels I'd pay that. I just couldn't see the point this time around going from an 8, with 5G and USB-C (and a redesign) incoming. This is from someone who can justify their top-spec MacBook Pros no problem.

After a few days with the 11 (bought one for my partner, who was using an SE), I have two thoughts you touched on:

1) The screen size is a personal preference to be sure. Coming from an SE, it feels huge, and was the one factor that made me think about returning it for a Pro - to come back down to that smaller screen and one-handed-ability.

2) The color really doesn't matter with an 11 if you don't get a clear case - and in many cases will look best in black, white, or silver. There's a shortage of cases that both protect the phone + look good against this set of pastel colors peeking out around the camera lenses.

But if you were in the market this year to upgrade no matter what, especially coming from before the X, the iPhone 11 is an incredible device and I think all the positive reviews for it are well-earned.
