I switched to the SE from the 6, For me the SE doesn't have the "sexy factor" of the 6/6s, I mean they are beautiful devices and yes the SE does look like something from 2012, rather than being at the cutting edge it makes you look behind the times. Performance wise though its a beast, I thought my 6 was quick until I got the SE. I guess its a compromise. I would have preferred a smaller version of the 6/6s case

It’s ironic that some people accuse Apple of mostly being a fashion accessory company now and yet so many people on this forum are leaving the iPhone or considering it because they think other phones look better. They may claim the other features are drawing them in too but if they are going to be honest a good percentage of switchers wouldn’t even consider it if it wasn’t for the physical design they are enamored with.
Truth and time go hand in hand. Quite a few of those who denied that they buy Apple products because of the "boutique mystique" do not like the SE because of its "stale" design.

I love my iPhone SE, and it replaced an iPhone 5s I had since 2013. It's a bit shallow, but it does bother me a little to know that most people just think it's an iPhone 5s. Even when I tell people it's an iPhone SE, which is technically the newest iPhone out, they don't understand that because they've never heard of it before.
I honestly don't understand that mentality... yours or that of "most people" you encounter. Why does it bother you if they think it is a 5S? (you say it's "a little" but it is enough to note it on the forum) Why do they care if it is an SE or 5S?

But that doesn't cause me to like it any less. I love the design. I love the size. I love the power and the camera. I would buy it again if I had to.
You might not like it any less, but you would like it MORE if it had a new design that wowed your friends. :p

Not in real life it isn't; I own both.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. That Sony has a throw-back design to when they produced portable media players.

I truly find it hilarious that anyone could care about how old a device looks. The 5/5s/SE design is worlds better than the 6/6s (I've had both), so why on earth would it matter that the better design happens to be older?

Because the society thought us in this way. New = ALWAYS BETTER and if you have something new then you are awesome like the others. I #%@# love 5s/SE design. It's the best design ever created by Apple IMO and i can't wait to buy one <3 .

I think it's just an effect of the iPhone SE being an impulse purchase. Since you've owned an iPhone 5 you knew what you were getting with the SE. It would feel old to yourself, of course. Getting that new to you Sony only added to that feeling. Nothing wrong with that. It should be pretty easy and quick to sell the SE.

Personally, I love my iPhone SE. It doesn't feel "old" nor "dull" to me. I wish it had the highly polished chamfered edge from the 5s and 3D Touch.

I think people may be putting far too much thought into it. My wife had an iPhone 5 for 2 years and then the iPhone 6 for the last 2 which she has absolutely hated. The look of the phone is secondary to the user experience usually. But if the OP gets down heartened by its old design, just sell it and take advantage of the 6S which is now costing less due to next months release.

You don't have to understand it and I'm not even going to bother explaining it because I have a feeling it's not going to lead anywhere. It's like my sister trying to explain her anxiety attacks or stress to me and all I can think to tell her is "just calm down." I don't understand it and I don't attempt to.

If you don't already understand why some people don't like buying new products that look like old products, I doubt I can explain it to you. For me, like I said, it's not going to keep me from buying something if I really like it, but it's still disappointing.

You might not like it any less, but you would like it MORE if it had a new design that wowed your friends. :p
Of course. Lol

But I don't care about wowing my friends. I would just prefer if it didn't look like I had a 3 year old phone, especially since I plan on keeping it for a few more years.

The only part of the iPhone SE that feels dull is the display. The viewing angles and color quality look dull compared to the 6 and 6s displays.

The rest of the design is iconic IMO, as it reflects the critical eye of Steve Jobs.

Had the SE since launch day after having the iPhone 6. I think the design of the 5/5S/SE is better than the 6 so i don't feel it looks dated at all, more of a classic iPhone design . I also appreciate the smaller phone a lot more than i thought i would when i got an iPhone 6 , i just hope Apple does not abandon the 4" again. If anything that Sony phone looks dated, very dated.

Yet it has the thinnest side bezels of any phone on the market :) How dated is that?

Clearly, the SE is a better phone - there is no comparison with its raw power, speed and camera, but 4" and square boxy design is 2012 - not modern at all.

The XA was more of an impulse purchase - it was bought in passing in a different store the next day. I wasn't particularly mindful when I bought it, just aware that it looked better than the SE and had that nice screen; yet it hasn't turned out to be an egregious mistake like the iPhone - that was planned, I'd looked at the website. I live less than a mile from the Apple Store, and, even though not fully recovered from my illness was able to easily walk there and back withi the SE in 90 minutes. Like I said, I wanted the latest new and shiny, but have discovered that design matters more - I couldn't give up an edge to edge curved screen for daily use.

Not an option with those bezels. I don't know why Apple still has to have a home button, either. I'm on the fence about keeping or selling the SE - I do like its camera, have found that iPhones take the best pictures quickly with a clean and easy interface; but I may just give it to my niece for her Birthday in October. She actually has a MS/Nokia/Windows Phone 730, poor girl. At least she'll be able to get the apps she moans about not having.

The SE is a great phone. One thing I discussed with another Forum Member is when I switched from my iPhone 6 to the SE, I struggled in finding the SE comfortable to hold, being it seemed edgey around the edges and slightly unrefined. I missed this with the iPhone 6, which had the smooth contour in your hand while holding it. The SE is a powerhouse of a Phone, but I can't wait to upgrade to the iPhone 7 when it debuts.

I'm not saying I wouldn't ever buy another iPhone, but I would want shrunken bezels, widgets, no home button and touch ID integrated into the screen. Perhaps in a couple of years.

And buying a 4" phone was my fault entirely - vanishingly tiny for playing anything but the most rudimentary games, too small for You Tube or Netflix. Perhaps it's my older eyes and others don't have this issue.

But then, I've got my tablet for that stuff. Specs don't matter as long as it's fast enough - I don't mind that it has an A8 instead of the A9.

I agree but that Sony is ugly

It's better looking than any iPhone I've seen. Of course, I own it and can see and feel it in person. Quite amazing considering its budget status in the X line. I don't want side bezels.

I also consider the 5/S/SE, 6s and + uglier than current Samsung models, although I would never buy a Samsung.

One buys a phone to play games. Christ I hate this place. What is the median (intellectual) age of this place, 12? I feel like MR has in some inexplicable way merged with Gizmodo. I'm surprised that MR doesn't have a Marvel Comics forum.

Since the most successful people usually have the oldest most beat up iPhone and those on average who are not, seemingly always have the bright shiny brand-new one, I would take pride in others believing you have an ancient device... if what others think is important to you. Just my own personal opinion and take on it

after the new phone launches in sept, the 5s would have been discontinued leaving apple with 3 gens of phone all looking almost identical. Thus apple recycled a 4 year phone design to keep some variety and will discontinue the 6 along with the 5s.

Who cares if someone mistakens your iPhone SE for an older 5 or 5S?

I don't use my phone as a status symbol, or as a way to measure my worth. If I wanted to get into a d***-measuring contest with complete strangers, I'd just whip it out and let it dangle.

I also think it would be very interesting to confuse people in a prank. You can whip out your SE and then let them play with it, and then they will wonder why their 5s feels slow and your "5s" feels super fast. That will be ... devilish to watch. And then you can tell them that it is SE, and they are never going to confuse it again. :p
