pointless? come now, that's a bit of a nonsensical comment.

are all the projects that Pixar and The Mill employees did in college pointless?

it's just an exercise, proof of concpet, or sorts.

were you expcting to learn the mysteries of life, the universe, and everything? :D :p

Yeah, right click (or control click) on the link in the original post and select "download linked file".

I think he meant pointless as in the video lacks a strong story element. Not pointless as in pdpfilms & company wasted their time in making this video.

Very cool pdpfilms. I'd previous scene a couple of other videos shot w/still cameras and they've all used a slightly different technique (one used the camera's QT ability and the other used a D-SLR that had a 8fps buffer).

And I agree w/crenz, if I hadn't read that the lack of snow was unintended it wouldn't have seemed out of place to me since the piece was arty anyway.

its pointless because there is no resolve, not even a little.
kinda like "broken flowers" but even less so.

there should be something to make me say "huh." or "oh, i see."
but there isn't. if its done as an exercise in technique, fine, but
it wouldn't make resfest or anyother film fest because nothing really happens.

ouch.

who said it needed to have a point?

I disagree .... Narratives are lame, let your fantasy work :p

Shouldn't take it personally. Different strokes for different folks.

That being said, it should have a point. Unless, as others have said, this was just a proof of concept piece. It doesn't have to have a typical structure to it. It can be abstract or "arty", but when you create something you should always have a story you are telling, a message you are sending, an idea that will hopefully connect emotionally w/your audience.

When I saw it I was let down because I was expecting more. That's not to say it was bad, just that I wish there was more to it.

I didn't think it was pointless. The video looked interesting and cool. It was very artistic. And it obviously had a good effect a lot of people. :)

But hey, some people look at famous abstract paintings and say "a two-year-old could have done that". What are ya gonna do, right?

I was guessing that he was going to watch the sunset or something at the end, but he just sat in the chair and left. But you already stated that the ending was meant to be longer. I guess some people just wanted to see where this young man was heading in his chair! :p

Nice work! :D

Whoa a lot of stuck up people here!

I've made about 10 or so videos over the past 5 or so years. nothing serious at all. hell one was about a paper shredder eating a guy, one was practically a music video about a bike thief. The most meaningful one I made was about a poice guy who turns on his partner because he's been bribed.

Nah, we live in a random world. Video's need not make sense. If we're thinking so logical then why did we cry when Apple announced switching to Intel? It was for the best but the amount of people who Threw up a little in their Mouth™ said it was a bad move.

Anywho. I think that things should just be enjoyed, if they're videos or games or anything. Everything else aside if it doesn't entertain or inform then there's no point.

First. I really enjoyed it. Fun concept.

Second. As someone else already mentioned, I think that the background music would have been better without voice. Music only would be best. Great tune for the concept.

Third. The ending(?) left me hanging...like something was missing. Maybe even a simple "The end" or credits. For a moment I thought that I had not DL'ed the whole file.

Thanks for sharing. Keep up the great work! :D

Very cool video. I have had some experience working with stop-motion animation. I did some post-production on a stop-motion animation TV show for Fisher Price "Little People". I think it is included when you buy the toys.

After Effects and Commotion Pro can also import TIFF image sequences into the timeline. I mostly did rotoscoping and supercloning to get rid of rigs used for holding the characters in place during some scenes.

Tip: There is an After Effects plugin called De-Flicker which is included in Tinderbox 2 (or Tinderbox 3?) which helps eliminate flicker due to changes in lighting. In case you undertake another project and come across that problem.

I actually liked the flicker. It kind of emphasizes the fact that the medium being used is not video, and that when shooting live subjects, conditions are ever changing. I think it gives it (in this case) a good feel. But for things like claymation and other non-live subject stop motion, i could see where the flicker filter could come in handy.

Here comes my least contributive post ever.

Ready?

Here it comes...

I agree completely. :)

First off cool video. I've been playing with stop motion lately and just today stumbled upon an article about Tim Burton's Corpse Bride. I know this is probably old news here in apple land, but the film was shot entirely with digital slr's (canon camera, nikon lenses) and edited in final cut pro. Anyhow I found the article to be awesome and here it is for those of you not on the bleeding edge of all things apple related.

if i was ever to get an SLR (all i have now is a kodak easyshare 6MP), is there a way to do something like that without pro apps?

Ummm..... I bet there's some shareware you could buy to do it. I don't know if iMovie would be able to do it... really, all you need to do is be able to import images, resive them to fit the video frame, and set their length to be one frame (1/24th of a second). Maybe iMovie could, but i'm sure there's a way. maybe someone else can enlighten us.

Me and my friend tried doing that once. It was with legos. We weren't using a camera though we were using a camcorder plugged into a computer capturing a picture everytime we hit the space bar. Then we edited it on Sony Vegas and you know how it is manually cropping every frame. It was so time consuming promised myself never to do something like that on a Windows ever again. But I might just try it again.

Now were you using NEF or whatever raw format D2X shoots? Because I was thinking shooting right to JPG would make everything so much easier loading wise but then your losing the whole ablility to manipulate it etc. I'm going to try this when I get more RAM in this MacBook.

Definetly not NEF... that would be such an unnecessarily high resolution format, and a pain in the arse to edit. I was shooting in small JPEGs, which end up being high quality enough to make a 720p edit from.

amazing! my favorite part was when the glass filled up with water. if anyone wants to do that without shake. aperture, and FCP, it could probably all be donew in Flash Basic.
