Yeah, the MBA is not to be pried open like an oyster for us non  techs

Did you get Apple Care?

I did yes... I am a part time student and apple took 14% off the price of the MBA and 80% of the price of Apple Care... the discount of Apple Care REALLY shocked me! Didn't you look at the photos ;)

iKennett - can you run a hard drive benchmark application on your Macbook Pro and your new Macbook Air, and list the results. I am extremely interested to see the difference in read and write speeds.

Which is the best one to use?

That looks sooo nice .

I'm pretty tempted. First thing I did in labs this morning was spec up a 11"er. 1.6GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM, 128GB Flash Storage. £997.58 incl. VAT on the student store.

Was sooo tempted to click buy...

Problem is that with a 15" C24 2.4GHz 4GB MBP (which I'll replace with Sandy Bridge) and an iPad and iPhone it's a bit hard to justify.

I need to go to the Apple Store really and have a nice play...

Where did you get that discount? Is it for a specific school?

Request: could you..

1. run an HD video (e.g. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v_FfHA5whXc at 720p) to see how hot the CPU gets and if the fans start to make audible noise? Most popular monitor is iStat Pro for your dashboard.

2. open up a lot of applications and a few Safari windows with a lot of opened tabs/sites. Then check the System Memory tab in Activity Monitor to see how much Page-outs your getting? And just basically see if everything is still running smoothly when you have much apps running. Can you still switch between the apps with ease, open up new stuff, etc?

OP, thanks for the tour!

I commented on your YouTube video, can you please try running a YouTube 1080p HD clip, fullscreen? I want to know your first-hand experience, does it stutter at all?

Thanks!

Im sure it was xbench that you can only run in 32 bit without paying

Also if thats the program then I was getting write speeds of 134 when i ran the recommended program i was getting 220 odd

Aja is the one:)

Ok...

AJA System Test (Disk Read/Write, File Sie 16GB)

New MBA
- Write: 184.3 MB/s
- Read: 197.6 MB/s

MacBook Alu:
- Write: 46.9 MB/s
- Read: 43.7 MB/s

Does this help? Let me know if you want any more tests.

Thank you. So I'm guessing the reflections aren't as bad, but not quite free off glare as a matte screen...?

That would be the case, glare but not like the glassy gloss of the MB and MBPs.

I would love to see what the fans run at while watching YouTube.

Wow great information. It's like....you have a audi TT and your speed limit is like 130MPH.

While macbook alu is like having a porsche but the speed limit is set to 55mph and the cops keep pulling you over. but sometimes, you cheat! and buy a radar detector.

Sounds like the trackpad click of the MBA is pretty loud, btw?

Thanks iKennett. I read about a dozen articles on the new Air, and your information was the most impressive and informative. A benchmark comparing two models, and a video of the boot up. Well done. Also, congrats on your new MBA. I am definitely jealous (lol).

I am completely convinced that the next major move in computing needs to be with solid state/flash technologies. I am seeing that it doesn't matter how fast your cpu is, because it's just going to be bottlenecked by a slow mechanical hard drive. I just installed an OCS Agility 2 SSD in a 2.2 GHz Core 2 Duo Lenovo notebook with 4GB of ram and 512MB videocard. The machine was just ok performance-wise, but with the SSD, it was a complete performance monster. It was so insanely fast, it blew my mind. Windows 7 Pro booting up in ~ 17 seconds, full scan using Symantec Endpoint Protection in just under 18 minutes, applications loading and running instantaneously - SSD is where it is at.

Could you comment on any fan noise, idle and under load?

Also interested in the screen quality as far as viewing angles?

Thanks!

Ikennett can you run any benchmarks or game demos to see what the graphics performance is like?

1. That youtube clip ran perfectly no issue... its not hot or even luke warm really. the fan is going but can't hear it unless place it to my ear.

2. Page outs read 128KB.. opened everything in default dock and switched around loads... photo booth for example worked fine. no slow down at all.

No fan noise under load but will report back when I try something demanding...

Viewing angle seems fine... get a yellowish tint on the screen past 45 degrees but still viewable. as in from head on a twist to the left or right by 45 degrees.
