I bought a Roomba 560 for my loft which has hardwood floors throughout and a tiled floor in the bathroom. I schedule it to run three times a week (Mon, Weds, Fri)whilst I'm at work and it does a bloody good job.

I have to clean the brushes, filter and dirtbox after every run (no idea where it gets it all the crap from) but this only takes five minutes. I change the brushes, filters and sweeper brush every six months.

I have two Roomba's, both 560's. One for upstairs and one for down. They work great although after a year Rosie is becoming a bit temperamental (Yeah, I named them), I need to clean her brush sensors better. But they work great and do a good job. BUT if you have more then two rooms, I would recommend getting another one, they do have a tendency to get lost if there are too many rooms.

Now, Roomba does have one flaw, BLACK! If you have black pattern or dark brown, then they think it is an edge and back away from it so they don't fall. This is not good, but I can point you to a website that will show you how to fix this problem --- as long as you don't have any stairs for it to fall down.

So, I've been doing some searching on all this. I had no idea there were so many sites dedicated strictly to vacuums. Talk about vacuum nerds. :)

Does anyone have a Hoover UH30010COM? It has great reviews on several sites, as well as Amazon, Best Buy, etc. It's not bagless, but I could live without that. It's kind of cool since it has an upright and a canister.

Oh yeah, I have also noticed that the Dyson is a love it or hate it thing. Lots of people seem to dislike it.

There used to be an MR member here named Sesshi who was anal as hell about his stuff, and he said Dyson's were overpriced 'average' vacuums. I remember him describing a bunch of vacuums that were better, and he generally had first-hand experience with things he talked about because he had a bazillion dollar budget and just bought all the options available. That's why I believe him.

Try MRoogling for the thread I'm talking about. It was in the Community forum as well.

My experience w/ my Dyson has been somewhat like my experience with my Mac.

Ours is better. No overheating and beach ball here, no cracking plastic either. 5 years with no problem.

We have the purple one for animals, but our labrador hates when I vacuum her. :D

I'd be really worried if the spinning beach ball o' death showed up on my vacuum cleaner. Or if my vacuum cleaner caused it to happen on one of my Macs. :)

i bought a DC05 brand new back in '99 and it's still working to this day, never broken down, never had any replacement parts, works a treat, dyson are really good ;)

Sorry to hijack the thread, but how are Roombas? I'm considering getting one due to my laziness.

got one last summer. highly recommend it.

do get the self-docking one, well worth the extra money by having it running when you are out. (every day)

it's amazing how well it works and how much craps accumulates around.
it's also smarter than i thought and rarely gets stuck.

you do have to clean it regularly and empty the tank which is rather small, but it takes just a few minutes a week.

also a major hit with my kids (basically it's like a pet :). 'he' has a name too :D) and a convo piece.

Cool! Another fun thread back from the graveyard! :)

The roomba sounds like a nice little thing to have scurrying about on a schedule.

I second the post about getting a professional type vacuum cleaner. CFM is what it's all about. If it doesn't suck really hard, all of the bright colors, fancy vortex things and any other "features" just don't matter.

My brand of choice? Filter Queen. Powerful suction and HEPA filtration. Absolutely no dust and the things last forever. The only downside is emptying the canister which is messy.

I bought my first one in '89! It's still going strong for a friend. I got the new "Majestic 360" model a few years ago because I like the attachments better.

Its the cheapest vacuum I've seen, like a Mac is the cheapest computer out there. How? Because it works great and lasts a very long time. In the long run, it's way cheaper than buying a plastic China vac every couple of years or for that matter, a PC. ;)

Have Fun,
Yippie! It's Friday!

The Roomba is fun - it's almost like having a pet. The only problem is that it takes a good amount of time to clean, so we still use a regular vacuum if we find ourselves needing a quick touch up.

Wow, zombie thread! I also realized I never updated. I ended up getting the Dyson DC25. Best Buy had them on sale, and had a deal where they were throwing in a Dyson portable unit (I forget the model number) with the purchase. I ended up getting the DC25 plus the handheld model for $399. (I think, it may have been $379)

So far, it has worked wonderfully. It does a good job on both the carpet and hardwood floors. The portable unit is handy for the furniture and my car.

I just bougth an LG vacuum for 200 bucks and its great. Easy to control, suction seems great. I looked at the dysons, but I fail to see how a vacuum could be $150-200 better than the one I bought, which I already consider to be on the higher end.

so I am not going crazy? :)

Well, that certainly is debatable. :D

But as for the post, that is probably what happened. One of the funnier ones I have seen lately was a 2-3 year old thread about an exploding porta-potty. It got brought back from the dead by a spammer trying to sell porta-pottys. I thought I had seen spam for everything until that I saw that.

My vacuum cleaner sucks

Well, the deleted post that bumped this thread must have been interesting, if we had been privy to it.

Maybe being a Mod here does have some ancillary benefits? :p

"Does it have a Sister?" - just for giggles.

I can give you the deleted spam link if you are really interested in clicking it

I think I reported it. Just a spam post if that was it.

Honestly, is a vacuum cleaner really where you want to put a large chunk of cash?

Waste of money IMO. Anything the store sells will work plenty fine, and if you vacuum every couple days like you should, you'll survive and your place will be clean.

There are some things worth spending good cash on, and then there are some things that are just a waste of money. All vacuum cleaners do the same thing--create suction, does the $400+ vacuum really do a better job of lifting weightless dust off the floor than a $100 vacuum? Doubtful.

I assume you have not used many vacuum cleaners before. Most of them are frustratingly awful.

I just bought a ShopVac from Lowe's for $90 which I intend to use as my primary vacuum, because I am so tired of commercial vacuums doing a poor job of cleaning. A ShopVac is a great vacuum if you live in a place you can deal with the much louder operating volume and do not mind having a non-elegant or sleek looking vacuum :)
