I guess I'm different and so is my marriage. Just because my wife isn't happy doesn't mean our marriage isn't. I don't have to kiss her ass to make my life happy. Nor her mine. If she's not happy doesnt mean I shouldn't either.

My wife can't wait to turn in her 3GS and get a iP4. So far, the iPhone 4 I have has been great. Lucky? Don't know. Could be perception, perspective, or just outright realization its just a phone.

However my wife said it best. A lot of iPhone 4 owners seem to be worse than women at a swap meet. These are the same people that cry when the just bought a new car "what do you mean I have to put gas in it? I just bought it, its new. I shouldn't have to put gas in it or change the oil. Its a brand new car. I don't care if its different than my last one. I should work exactly the way I want to".
Translation: I shouldn't have to hold this new phone a different way. Its new. I just bought it. It should work the same as my old one.
A.K.A. Stop whining. If you don't like it, take it back.

No, she's not as needy or needs to be treated special like others. She admits she's an equal. :D

In the history of cellphones, until now I've never heard that there's an "incorrect way" to hold a phone. Simply hold it up to your ear, done. Beyond this, to be told that there's now a correct and incorrect way to hold a phone is beyond stupid. If someone can't create a device that is used within standard interactive processes, then they've failed.

If you want to be an apologist, that's fine. But at least own up to it.

This is happening non-stop for me. Really annoyed with Apple. I shouldn't have to buy a freaking case for it to work like a phone.

Ya, keep the wife happy--always a safe bet. ;-)

My wife and I preordered through AT&T and cancelled last week. Not a return but a lost sale I guess. We saw the segment on CNN about the dropped calls, one of their journalist types was physically demonstrating it so that sort of killed it for us I guess. I had ordered the bumpers through Apple's website when we preordered but since we didn't keep the phones, I went to return them last week to the nearest Apple store.

To their credit, they took the cases back without a problem but not without some hassle. They clearly must be feeling some sort of "pinch" because the guy decided to lecture me on how "disappointed" I'll be not having the iPhone, how all phones have reception issues, etc. I'm sorry but I'm using a cheapie little Nokia on AT&T and it doesn't drop calls at all, _and I'm in Los Angeles!_ My wife has an iPhone 3G and it doesn't drop any calls except once in a while on 3G. I'm not going to buy a $30 bumper case for a $300 phone just because they want me to hold it like a lobster. Not good Apple. Anyway, I got the refund and walked out. The whole thing was a bit of a disappointment.

Interesting so you haven't even tried the phone and you've already counted it out. I know there are a ton of people without any issues but the ones with problems are the ones who are heard. My wife, my few friends and myself that have the iPhone 4 haven't had any issues with dropped calls. I can get signals bar to drop if I squeeze the crap out of it, but the call stays connected. I think I'd be more disappointed using a cheap old nokia phone. But to each his own.

I'm not taking a "risk" on it if that is what you mean.

She actually has a case on the phone and still getting the drop calls...The proximity sensor has happened since day one. As stated earlier we find it funny my daughters 3gs has full signal and ours has 1. I used to get a drop call every now and then using 3gs but now multiple times a day.

Whats more frustrating we were booking airline reservations and the phone drop the call twice. Lucky enough the agent had my cell so she called back the first time and then the second also. I told her about the new Iphone and she stated she watched something on the news about it. Thats just sad and she kinda chuckled stating "guess they were right". I apologized and she called me back on my daughters cell (3gs). Guess what never drop the call and actually clearer.

Not saying this is 100% but had a clear type of case with this material as a starter case. Dropped calls, fadeouts - the finger of death.

Got another case: Body Glove Vibe case. No more problems.

Not all cases block the conductivity with humans.

That exterior antenna is havoc when joined by conductive humans.

So your wife has a high galvanic skin response? Keep the iPhone. Perhaps you could use it as a lie/anger/sexual arousal detector. ;)

I really don't understand this issue, I haven't a dropped call since owning the phone. I can recreate the problem in my low signal bedroom but even then it's not really a problem it I'm mindful of the left corner.

I just don't understand how people aren't able to work with this phone and enjoy it. OP you and your wife must have terrible signal in your area.

We are both apple fans so kinda hard to return any product.
I love my new Core i7 MacBook Pro, and was counting on a great iPhone 4 experience.

Too bad Apple really blew it.

This firestorm of controversy has cost them in ways they have yet to realize. Oh well it's history in the making, and quite entertaining at that... :)

It's quite simple. The smartphone sector is filled with great phones. There is no reason to have to "work with" a sub-par iPhone 4.*

I've relegated mine to a secondary device to take advantage of it's use as an iPod with a great display. Fortunately I have other new smart phones activated on their own lines. Therefore I didn't miss a beat.*

Too bad I can't say that for Apple, I had planned on the iPhone 4 living up to their excellent standards of the past. Yet as they say, all things must pass. Sadly that seems to be the case with Apples once stellar quality.*

I had the exact same problem with mine and my wife's Iphones. She too was fed up with the reception, dropped calls etc etc. She wouldn't stop nagging!!
So after a week of the badgering I took them BOTH back to Apple. Now the guy at the genius bar was VERY apologetic but he said there was nothing he could do about the iPhone but he did offer to upgrade the wife. WELL, I jumped on that and I can tell you today the reception issues are the same but the wife......

As you can see she has been properly trained how to hold the iPhone 4 by Apple.

Well log my wife into the category of taking her Iphone 4 back.
After approx 15 drop calls today and phone randomly dialing when talking (prox sensor Im guessing) she has had enough. What sucks is I have had approx 8 drop calls on mine today while our daughters 3gs (my old phone) has had zero. Her 3gs phone registers 5 bars and our has 1 at same locations. Just crazy. Im still holding out on returning, but I can't convince her otherwise.

Kinda sucks since I stood in line most of the day to get two phones. However since she doesn't care for the feel and is having issues might as well return.

I read where apple is coming out with a fix, but she feels this is just tricking the phone since our daughter has no issues at all.

We are both apple fans so kinda hard to return any product.

Sorry, but I don't believe a word of it. First off, the new iPhone has slightly better reception than the 3GS despite all of the hoopla around the supposed "reception issues". Also, how can her phone make a call when she's already on a call? I can see perhaps the mute button being pressed, but not put the call on hold and make another one. Also, if she was really having that much trouble with the proximity sensor, certainly the phone would be defective and Apple would replace it.

I call troll.

The hyperbole in posts on this forum never ceases to amaze me. "firestorm of controversy?" It is already well on it's way to becoming the best selling cell phone in history and will continue to sell like crazy despite the supposed issues.

Right because it's so difficult to avoid a 2mm clearly visible black seam when in a low signal area. Go have fun with those other "problem free" handsets. My work phone is a Droid, no thanks on using that as my primary phone. Not a bad alternative, but none of them compare to Iphone 4 in my opinion. This "issue" is becoming a mountain out of a mole hill.

This iPhone 4 fiasco has truly shown me a frightening side of insane Apple fans. You sir are among the worst. Your post was embarrassing to read.

Also, it's funny to see all these people telling others to get a case for the phone while completely ignoring the fact that the proximity sensor problems have absolutely nothing to do with a case.

I would return it and to have her rebuy if when/if the issues get sorted out. As for me, I get plenty of dropped calls where my 3GS didn't but I like the phone, realise that it'd a design flaw and that there isn't a way around it. If it becomes severe (kind of like yesterday where almost every person i called resulted in a "call failed") then I will sell it and go to Verizon (the iPhone was the only reason I switched over anyhow). Considering what I had to do get the money to buy it and preorder it I think I'll keep it, at least for now.

First, per Anandtech, where the 3GS has a 1.9 dB attenuation of the signal when holding the phone normally, and the Nexus One has 10.7 dB attenuation, the iPhone 4 has 19.8 dB. So even though the iPhone 4 is better at making out the transmission when the signal is weak, it still drops the connection when the signal is below -113 dB, like every other phone. So if you're starting out with, say, a -90 dB signal, the 3GS and Nexus One will continue working but the iPhone 4 will be unable to maintain the connection for the most part.

Second, regarding the proximity sensor issue - look around on macrumors and you'll find plenty of other people with the exact same issue. My impression from the threads is that it's actually somewhat common, it's just not getting as much attention as the signal discussion. Anyway, the phone doesn't recognize when it's being held near a face, so the touchscreen doesn't shut off. The added call comes from the user's cheek hitting the "add call" button, then selecting a contact.

I'm beginning to understand why Apple users are generally disliked, and seen in a particular light by non-users. I can't believe the number of snide, negative and arrogant responses to this thread, by people who either daren't hear or say a bad word about a company that honestly couldn't give a crap about them as long as they keep coughing up their cash like lemmings every time they release a new product; or have little or no respect for the feelings of others, happily willing to dish out some smarmy little throw-away comment about the perceived inadequacy of someone else's life. This guy was just giving an honest appraisal of his experience with the phone and you somehow find a way to give him grief for it.

Yeah, it's as if the user base has forked somewhere along the line into fanboys and customers. Fanboys believe everything Jobs & Co. tells them to believe while customers are just like every other customer out there--they make up their own minds, vote with their $, and try to find common-ground with other customers.

Plus, it's not like Apple takes criticism well either....they're spending more time deleting discussion board threads than actually answering questions or helping customers at the moment.

PS: It was on CNN all last week for this issue. http://cnn.com/video/?/video/tech/2010/06/25/simon.apple.iphone.cnn

Oh yeah and we all know the media never blows anything out of proportion. What's pathetic is people like you accusing someone who actually is using the phone with no problem as being a fan boy. So I'll just do the same and call you a troll since you like to categorize everyone who has this phone.

This is true. It just proves that you don't have to have a great product, just a great smoke and mirrors marketing machine. Toss in a charismatic & shifty spokesperson and you have the secret sauce that sells. The average iPhone user doesn't know anything other than "it's cool" and lots of people buy them. Well, lots of people eat fast food too. So what.....ha..ha..ha....:D
