there is way more technology power in a sewing machine than any laptop

this must be what she got (considering the price); impressive specs...

Singer SD-7550H Sewing Machine ($7500. list):
7.8Ghz intel core quad i9 processor
32G ram, 5TB SSD
Auto-trace sewing
Auto-correct
Black "Mac" turtleneck auto-create
iSinger online storage
1K free patterns, built-in
40 hours battery (sweater mode)

Sounds like a plan. Start out with the 1/2 Pad and go from there. In the meantime, if you go to the Apple store, leave the credit card at home or odds are you'll be posting about (and from) your new rMBP. ;)

FYI...if you don't have any heavy requirements for processing or storage space, the base rMBP is plenty...especially if you back it up with a home-based machine, like an iMac. The new models might be announced around the time of the itty-bitty Pads. Just thinkin' out loud. ;)

:apple:

I'm on a new job and it looks like I'll be going back to flying to work each week. In the past I've used a MBA and this 13" MBP. They both work really good in tight quarters (the MBA was stolen last year). The 15" rMBA looks fantastic, but I really want a 13" for travel. I don't want to think about what might come, but I may have to.

That's great. Very creative. I like it.

I love gadgets, and have loads of them. I also understand that most tech gadgets depreciate really really quickly. Apple stuff hardly seem worth using after 3 years if it's still working.

A good sewing machine should last forever. Also depends what it's used for of course.

---
Depends how urgently you want your 13", you can probably hold out till Xmas.
Else you can get the rMBP first, and sell it for a 13" when it's released.

Yikes! I just googled images on porscha. That's pretty hard on an old man like me!

I don't think you got the real sense of what I wrote ... you should watch Two and a half men (season 2, episode 22 : "That old hose bag is my mother") ... but YES, googling porscha gives you nice results anyways !

I love my gadgets too. I keep them in the family. Never tried to sell computer, but I have thought about the trade-in place that Apple had on their Web site for a time.

Might as well add a couple of thunderbolt displays to your order. :D

Thanks for the suggestion but I wouldn't use them. I have a monitor that I take on site with me sometimes for work but I never use it at home. I've seen those displays at the Apple store and they do look great. But I like the freedom of the laptop. If you have a laptop do you use a monitor with it?

This prompted me to look up median doctor salaries, and wow....I should have been a doctor. I had the means to before college. I knew they made a lot of money, but not that much.

Buy whatever you want man, If you guys got the cash flow than have fun with it. You cant take it with you when you die. BTW, I hope youre kidding about paying rent lol :p

She doesn't call it rent. It's my contribution. She's a really cool lady and a hippie at heart. We actually lead a very low key life. Don't travel much, don't go out. She drives a Toyota Rav 4, the smallest in their SUV line. She only has one fault that I can think of, she won't buy a Mac. All of her kids have them but she won't consider it. But she does have an iPhone which makes her a keeper.

This seems like an issue that would normally occur the other way around. Me buying an expensive MBP and my wife buying something ridiculous just because haha.

With all due respect, it seems you and the wife should have more discussions about family finances. Being on different pages regarding the finances has "killed" many marriages. They still cause issues in mine.

As an aside, when does an MD have time for sewing. Thought all their stitching occurred in the OR. Good luck my friend.

To be fair.... the OP's wife could have stolen the sewing machine.

If you would, please answer a question for me. Why do people make derogatory comments in threads like this?

The average MacRumor forum-goer can't just drop several thousand on a MBP on a whim, and so your being able to (and furthermore announcing it on here) is taken irritably. This is my guess and is in no way based on statistical evidence, of course...

Personally even if I had effectively unlimited funds I wouldn't throw money around frivolously... if you watch people who earned their money by themselves they don't tend to do this even if they are able to because it's not this lifestyle that earned the money in the first place. I think MDs tend to defy this trend because they usually suddenly come into a huge salary since promotions or years of career building are replaced by schooling.

Thanks for the comment. I do regret my comments here and even started to edit them out until I realized that they are comments that were made and people did respond to them. I would bet anything that I never make this mistake again.

Don't get me wrong - just pointing out that adults can be just as jealous as kids.

Yeah, the new rMBPs are fantastic.

However,if you wanna go smaller, there's a ton of rumors a 13" rMBP might be just around the corner.

I am failing to see the logic. It would appear to some extent that you two don't need to sit down and discuss purchases large or small. That happens and is easier to manage when the money is flowing; however, what does her $7k purchase have to do with your childish retaliation? Did I miss the part of the story where you stated you two vowed to never make large purchases without telling the other first? Did you say you told her not to buy it and she did so now you want to retaliate?

You're a grown ass man, buy a new computer if you want it. I don't see the correlation between her purchase and this declaration that you finally have an excuse to buy something with a big price tag. Again, if I missed the above parts of your story then much of this would not apply except that I think retaliation in a marriage is the start of a road that leads to divorce.

In other words, grow a scrotum and buy whatever the heck you want. :D

Heh. My wife and I often joke about "You bought x" so "I am going to buy Y." It's not retaliation just the normal give and take between two adults. She does admit an advantage to being married to a nerd is they lust after toys not younger blondes...

Some people really do need to be medicated

Hey Duggram, do your thing and F what people say!!! If you have the financial leeway then by all means splurge on a rMBP. For the folks telling you to grow a pair and stop being childish or they find your comments irritating, they need to back the hell off and start looking into displacing their misguided self-hatred and envy elsewhere. You only live once and money is only good for SPENDING when you are alive. I'm not encouraging you to be a huge spendthrift to the point of endangering your marriage (which seems highly unlikely given the financial cushion between you and your wife ;) ) but some people here need to chillax and stop getting so wounded up at the good fortune of others. They act as if you're putting their well-being in jeopardy just by deciding to purchase a rMBP. By the way, I'm an RN just like you and may possibly end up marrying a doctor (Phd Neuro-biologist) just like you ;) I've been strongly considering the rMBP but may hold off to see what October reveals after all the rumors floating around of a near iMac refresh. You shouldn't regret your comments, you should regret blaming yourself for the ridiculousness and ill-nature of others.

i dont blame you man. I probably wouldve done the same thing if i was in your shoes. might have thrown in a couple of displays just to make things a bit more even ;)

Unless someone here has a better idea.

Yeah I do! Stop asking some of the folks (refers to individuals with no valuable input that can only bicker and criticize others) here for advice and go buy that rMBP! You'll love it man! :D

I think if the OP wanted the rMBP, he should have purchased it. Trying to match his wife's expensive purchase is just silly.
