The problem is v3 of MyWi does NOT work with iOS4. Therefore you are forced to pay $10 if you want to tether again.

If I own a 2009 Vette and I like the new features of the 2010 Vette, but don't want to pay money for it I can still drive my 09 Vette because it works just fine.

Great response. +1

If I own a 3.1.3 iOS and I like the new features of the 4.0.1 iOS, but I don't want to pay money for it (or the programs I run on it) I can still use 3.1.3 because it works just fine.

Exactly. I'm so annoyed with people nowadays that just expect every update/new version to be free. They think that when you buy one app, thats like a lifetime license to guarantee future content, updates, add-ons, etc.

Just go look through reviews in the App store and you'll see what I mean. Like half the reviews are people bitching saying things like "oh you haven't added new content blah blah I want my money back I already beat the game and now I have nothing to do."

Peoples' sense of entitlement truly annoys me.

Your point is valid, in most cases, however not in this one. Your comparison is like when they released OS 4.0... the 2010, 2009, 2008 model of the iPhone was able to run it, but Apple kicked the 2007 iPhone 2G... that's reasonable. You can't support a product forever.

However if Apple had said "ok we're releasing 4.0 and you can only use it if you have a iPhone 4", that'd be unfair to all those who'd bought the product in good faith over the last year.

I bought MyWi in April on my 3GS. I don't think it's unreasonable for them to upgrade users who bought it in such short time period before the new version to upgrade.

You are aware that this is actually how MOST companies work on things like this, right? Apple giving new features to old devices at the same time that they release new hardware is an exception, not the rule.

That's utterly untrue.

Android charges for updates? Windows mobile charges for updates? Blackberry OS charge for updates? NO, you're only comparing to desktop operating systems. Mobile operating systems are free updates that the manufacturers MUST do in order to stay relevant in the marketplace.

Let's legitimize it. If you bought a version of say.... Farmville from the App Store, and 2 weeks later Apple released an OS that made your version of Farmville inoperable. Do you think Farmville would CHARGE for the upgrade to continue using the product you paid for? Of course not.

I suppose in a capitalist society they're ABLE and FREE to do anything they want, but with several alternatives on the near horizon, I as a consumer have the choice to give my business to someone else, and that's what I'll do. Since my phone is unlocked and not on AT&T, my carrier provides free tethering and it's unlimited 3.5G for 24 hours for $1.00 (no data cap), so I suppose I'll just have to suffer using the USB cable until a viable wifi alternative comes out.

Geez it's a full point jump. You'll get MyWi 4.x updates at no cost. If you want MyWi 5.0 when it's released you'll have to pay for it. Gotta pay to play. They gave us some pretty good updated features in 4.0. It's almost like new software. $20 is kind of on the edge of being pricey for iphone apps I'll admit that but if you're going to tether it's definite worth it especially when you have unlimited data

I bought 3x for my 3G and will update my iP4 to MyWi for $10.

Well if a full point means full point's worth of features, that's fine, but the only difference is the phone 4.0 vs 3.0 compatibility so it's not rally an upgrade in feature, it does the same thing as it did before. Apple Snow Leopard could justify charging $29 because they added a thousand new features. If MyWi had a list of new features, I'd jump on it.

MyWi 4 New Features and Improvements:
⁃ Faster performance
⁃ Lower battery consumption
⁃ Choose the In Use Indicator that you want:
- - Status bar icon (no battery use)
- - Blue pulsing bar (10% - 15% more battery)
⁃ Adjust the WiFi transmit power (Between 30% and 100%)
⁃ Battery consumption meter
⁃ USB Bridge mode. (Connect your laptop over USB to the phones 3G or WiFi connection!),

MikePA listed the new features. Others have already stated that if you use it via USB your battery stays at 100% where on 3.x it would drop. That's a big feature right there, the transmit power and the Bridge are all new features.

Yeah and many say that when new Safari updates come out that their webpages load faster, it's BS. If you're hooked into USB you're still using the battery of the phone or the battery of the laptop, so the juice comes from somewhere. A bug fix is not a new feature.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for supporting software developers, but $19.99 for an app that does one primary feature (broadcast phone's 3G wirelessly) vs $1.99 for say... Wheel of Fortune which is put out by a huge company that is updated 20 times a year for free and takes 1000x the manpower hours to develop, comon... you can't say that the $19.99 is a reasonable price for a single feature to be enabled. Its like the music industry... if record companies would sell CDs for $5, and an mp3 song for $0.10, they'd still be a billion dollar money making industry, but the people who would pirate their music would go down dramatically, and the add-on sales would sky-rocket.... but whatever.

This is really a silly argument. I made my decision, and everyone will make their own decision. But with 4.1 looming (major update expected, and gasp.... FREE), I'm not going to take my chance on it disabling MyWi and then having to pay another ten bux to the greedy developers. I'd rather use that $10 to the Dev Team... if only they took donations.
