IMO, calling it "The New iPad" was stupid in the first place. But what's done is done, so now what do they call the next one?

The iPad (4th gen)

The New iPad (renaming the previous one)

iPad 4

iPad 3

iPad 3.1?

other??

even if it's what looks to be a small refresh that's coming out in 2012?

Considering Apple's attempt to make things simpler has resulted in so much confusion then maybe Apple should take this opportunity to fix their naming and just officially call the refreshed iPad the "iPad 3".

But Apple is stubborn enough to just stick with their poor naming scheme and let their army defend it for them so I dont expect any change.

The late 2012 refresh could be 3s.
2013 version will be iPad 4

iPad 3S? I like it. Considering that everyone calls it the iPad 3 anyway then this gives them the opportunity to get back on track without having to admit they screwed up. Plus, most people would appreciate anything to get Apple to go back to a numbering scheme so that googling for accessories or discussing the product doesn't require a string of descriptors just to clarify the subject. (iPad, retina, new, 3, 2012, current gen)

For the love of God, it is not and never was "The New iPad"! It is the new "iPad". New is not part of the name.

Should be iPad late 2012 but there is another one coming out (9.7 with lightning).

So i guess iPad nano. :D

Thank you for proving my point. The "new" isn't capitalized, it's not part of the name. In fact, the word is given a different look than the word iPad in your link. Maybe you should take your own advise.

Have you looked at the comparison box at the bottom right of the page? Maybe you should learn to read or basic grammatical rules?

Oh no, the I in iPad isn't capitalized! It's not part of the name!

Hahaha

Add one to your cart. Tell me what it says.

The retina MBP are "Macbook Pro with Retina Display", the new iPad will be:
"iPad with Lightning Port" or something like that...

Silly. It was never part of the name.

The fact that 8mo later and this is still debated is a clear indication of a naming fail. We shouldn't have to add items to cart, evaluate grammatical rules or use multiple parenthesis to indicate what product we are talking about. Regular users arent calling it the iPad 3 to be rebellious, they're doing it out of convenience so Id hope Apple would take that into consideration for future products.

But I'm starting to feel that BOTH the 9.7" and 7.85" will be called the "iPad" and the consumer will just have to sort out what the heck the product is on their own. And that would be a mistake because at this point then if Apple doesn't give a specific name then "iPad Mini" is being used enough that it will be stuck as the non-official name.

Hmmm?

I hope at this point they switch to something more sensible, like iPad (March 2012) and iPad (October 2012), but I'm guessing it will be something like The new iPad (3rd generation) (with Lightning).

Silly. It was never part of the name.

It may not be "officially" part of the name, but they kind of made that the name anyway when they abandoned the naming convention that they established with the iPad 2.

Going by their current logic, all iPads from now on would be referred to "the new iPad" (while officially named only "iPad"). "iPad 3" would definitely feel like something of an admission of error on their part, but maybe that's what they'll go for anyway.

My bet is on just "iPad (4th generation)"
