OP it was never called "the new iPad" it was just the "new" iPad.

wow.

Sigh. This has already been responded to. I'm just asking a question, I didn't pork your mother or something. Settle down peoples.

So... now that we're talking about this as sane calm reasonable adults... if it is indeed just called iPad (like the first one, making the naming of the 2nd one just an unfortunate mistake, I guess), then what do you call it when it is no longer new? Do you refer to it by generation? Date? Simple questions.

again, it's no different than any mac, macbook pro, macbook pro with retina isn't called the mbp with retina 1.

the iphone is iconic now, even bigger than apple so i could see them sticking to the number system with that or they would have changed it and left out the 5 in iPhone 5

And the iPad ISN'T iconic?

An argument for the naming can go both ways, but the end result that shouldnt be ignored is that Apple has tried to drop the numbering from the iPad line but the general public and media have put it back. This isn't some sort of defiance against Apple or a protest, everyone calls it "iPad 3" out of convenience. It makes it easier to talk about it, to google it, to buy a proper case etc. So unless Apple gives an official name on "The new smaller iPad" then the public will just call it the "iPad Mini" because we want to talk about it without confusion.

Nothing is like the iPhone.
