Sylver,

Just to be clear. WTV and M4V files FF/Rew without problems, timer displays properly, playback is smooth.

File type: MPG - Timer doesn't display properly, stuttering on restart.

And the HDHomeRun DVR is not bad since you really only setup recordings once in a while. Just now need a nice playback app.
Totally different "use" case for us, at least until your "hope" comes true.

We record ALL of our series shows, nightly news, some one-time sports, events and movies with HDHR or CC DVR (free within our HOA); with FF, we are as commercial free as possible. Our only "Live TV" is cable news during the day.

I do like the channels app, but probably wouldn't use it much, unless they add: Siri, what did he/she say?
The UI elements of the Infuse player are close, however it's playback is totally unacceptable and has been for 3 years on ios. MrMc has excellent file support for playback, but it's a PITA, and is jarring for non tech types.

So, for my household, the playback app is of utmost importance. Efficient non server player, easy navigation: both the path to videos and playing the video, etc. And an elegant UI would be awesome.

NAStify is FANTASTIC for playback of our files. Sylver is/will be adding those "nice to have" UI elements, hence it is my player of choice.

Prior to returning my DVR's. I had 2x 6 Turner Whole Home DVR's. My wife would record a few shows. But I would record up to 4 shows at a time. Almost all within CBS, NBC, CW, ABC, FOX. On Sunday AM would record the 3 Network 8am News type shows. Also, I record 1 News type show nightly.

Since Hulu (no commercials). All NBC, CW, ABC FOX Shows that I recorded (except BlackList on NBC) I now watch via Hulu (no commercials). For me this is much better then having to FF thru a show. And the cost is $12 per month. CBS All Access ($6 per month) is similar but with limited commercials. I would rather DVR CBS and stop paying the $6. Just waiting for the DVR to work better (getting closer). Same for the News Shows. I am recording them but the playback is just not great. The BlackList on NBC (very popular) show is not on Hulu for some unknown reason (too popular?). I have a couple other shows but not a big deal to me. Of course after FALL SHOWS are over I am back to Netflix, HBO Now, Showtime. Of course no need to DVR HBO and SHOWTIME.

You clearly describe the problem with all of the playback options. NAStify is pretty good but just needs to finish as I described. Infuse has potential to be really good if they fix the performance. They request my file information which I sent them. MrMC is just painful to use. The Live TV Channels App is used heavily here. My wife prefers Live TV (for some reason). I watch the News Live sometimes. I have a lot of family coming in for holidays and they like Sports (live tv).

Also, we have 8 TV's in the house. Very costly to have all available content on every TV without having both STB and ATV on every TV. And 1 TV only has WiFi Access to it. Now, no STB's and ATV on every TV. I love it. Every TV has all Content. Just need to resolve this DVR Playback and I am good.

Mike:

We shall see. Hulu is a no go on HAF. Maybe, he'll try again on the ATV4.

As a lot of DVR programs use the same protocol as Silicondust (mpg), fixing NAStify playback (FF/Rew) problem should be foremost in Sylver's list.

Hulu is really good. Except the Watchlist just got re-done (you had to request it). Since they brought it back they have not added to ATV 4 yet. Only ATV2/3. Good thing fall TV on break. They did give me free month for my troubles. Anyway with Watchlist it is just like your recordings list. Once you watch it drops off. Once a new episode comes available then it shows up in the watch list. Very nice. For now you have to use Favorites/Queue/Shows you watch. Not nearly as nice.

Hope you are right about NAStify. I think the App that simply gets it right will get the business. Channels has announced plans to integrate the DVR Service with Live TV that works very well. It could be nice depending on how implemented. I am convinced someone will get this right soon. 90 days on the outside I will have multiple choices.

Hi All!

I just bought the new ATV, happy with it.
I am making my tests as to which App to use to play contents from my NAS.
Obviously 2 options include Infuse and Nastify.
I am quite happy with Infuse playback, however from what I see I would prefer Nastify way of browsing (a simple folders view is what I need!).

BUT there are 2 things needed, and I searched in the thread but couldn't really get the answer for sure:

-Does it suport 5.1 DD/DTS etc.... passthrough? This is a crucial point for me. I have lots of files with 5.1tracks and a 5.1 sound system so not being able to use it is not an option (OK to pay for licencing if needed).

-I saw there is subtitles support, BUT can it find subtitles on its own (from opensubtitles for example)?

Thanks!

Salut Romf ;)
DD 5.1 is not yet supported, i'll work on this during christmas holidays ! If you want to test this during developpement, send me an email at codeisalie <at> gmail.com and I'll add you to the beta tester group (warning, I'm sending probably too much beta versions but I'll slow down ;))
When playing a movie, swipe down to show some setup menu, in the track selection you'll see available tracks/subtitles available in the file and you'll see an option to search for some subtitles on opensubtitles ;)

Been getting a lot of stuttering and lag lately. Probably network related but is there anyway to turn up the pre cache to be a few minutes? I'm currently already issuing the Lowest Latency setting.

Also when starting a video the time is wrong :)

@tgwaste : there is a setting called "Network Caching Level" in Settings/VLC settings ! Set it to ""Highest Latency", but if your connection throughtput is really slower than video throughtput, it'll will not prevent caching from time to time (with this setting you will increase caching time but it'll cache less often).

For everyone : NAStify v1.2.1 is now available on the AppStore !

New features :
- Add subtitles settings (encoding/font/color)

Bug fixes :
- Video deinterlacing setting was not working
- UPnP browsing was not possible on some devices (like HDHomeRun devices)
- UPnP listing was limited to 100 files on some servers
- Fix possible crash when deleting files
- Fix SMB/CIFS connection on some servers

I am finding this new release to be quite a bit slower then the previous release.

EDIT: I was mistaken and removed most of my post.

To those posting in this thread, is this worth the 2 bucks? I just want a way to play files from my NAS without using my computer as a server like PLEX does.

I am finding this new release to be quite a bit slower then the previous release. I have a GB LAN and in the past I would say how fast the changing channels were. I mean in some cases it was instant. This was a huge plus for your App. To be clear it is not always Instant but maybe like 1 second. Now it appears to be mostly around 3 seconds. So some that is not much but compared to 1 second it is 3x slower. You mention "Network Caching Level". Could this be the difference? And if so, what setting would make it the same as before? Having an experience much like using a STB was what I was very impressed with.
I've not done any important change in new release, and none could change the respond time !
Anyway what you describe is exactly what I tried to explain : the option is increasing the video buffer, and as the video is starting when the buffer is full, then it'll take longer to start ! If the server is responding quickly and the connection is fast, then the difference should not be visible, but if the connection is slow, then it will be visible !

I think that there are several comparison (written by some users) available in the thread, you should have a look at previous pages !
You'll see that I'm doing my best to solve problems I can solve ! For now I'm only stuck with a video streaming issue on some HDHomeRun devices ...
Beside that, the app is in constant evolution and it'll improve itself a lot and be sure than it'll become more than a media player :) For now the biggest lacks in my app are "favorites" miss and AC3/DTS passthrough (for people with DD 5.1 or more), but I'm working on that right now ;)

Anyway I'll let other users answer to your question ! But to be able to respond, maybe you could tell what you are expecting from that kind of app !

Is there a plan to support dvd-bd iso and folders (video_ts etc) ?
DVD iso is working but interactions with menu is not implemented yet (so it'll work great if you have no dvd menu left in the dvd iso) ! For BlueRay iso, I have to find one to download and test but it's possible that it's already working !
video_ts folders support is not supported yet, but you can play vob files directly ! You'll just have a small pause when the player will change to next vob file.

For the HDHomeRun issue, could people with the problem test with latest VLC for iOS version (it was updated yesterday) ?

Sorry, I did some additional testing and I think I was mistaken. Maybe a separate issue. I will modify my original post.

Well worth the cost, for me it is better than the other (more expensive) players.

Plays files quickly and efficiently from WD MyCloud and Time Capsule (directly). Specifically:

WTV and M4V files FF/Rew without problems, timer displays properly, playback is ultra smooth.

MPG - Timer on FF/Rew doesn't display properly, slight stuttering on restart.

For sure. I am testing 3 Apps in this category and at this point NAStify is the best.

Yes, it is. I'm mainly playing with 2 app for this still. NAStify and Infuse. Between them it's basically Infuse has a better, prettier UI and NAStify's video playing is much better. Infuse is slow to start, FF, etc. and can stutter at times. You can see the difference in where each developer's focus is. At this point I'll take the solid playback over pretty UI since the UI doesn't ruin the viewing experience and can be fixed over time.

Yes, I read the first six pages or so and then skipped to the last two. Didn't see too many reviews on the app overall. Post seemed tone heated more towards technical questions and troubleshooting. The fact that you were actively responding to issues is what originally piqued my interest.

This is awesome, exactly the feedback I was looking for. I have a WD MyCloud, so I'm going to give this app a try.

Thank you! This is what I wanted to hear.

I am intrested why my picture shutter if I play video file from my Synology DS214play over Asus AC87U (5Ghz) Wifi on perfekt signal with 870Mbps connection.
I aslo checked with another HDMI cable but the same problem?

Is this too heavy for Apple TV 4 to decode for smooth play?

Merry Christmas everyone ! I'll answer all questions later, it's family time :)

@fhall1 thanks but I'm not really having rest, I'm working on updating iOS version of NAStify to add SMB and some other things that AppleTV version has ;)
@Noltimm I'm getting the video file to check but 1080p x264 is not a problem to decode at all ... Anyway I'll check needed throughput and if there is any fps drop during playback ! Could you describe a little more what you mean by "shutter" ? Is it constant, or only sometime ?
