My iPhone has completely replaced my P&S. There's no real reason to carry a P&S anymore.

I imagine NG doesn't care what you take the pictures on. I imagine if you took the pictures on a pinhole camera made out of a shoe box, but they were NG quality, they would publish them. They are in the business of selling a magazine with stunning nature and subject photography, not worrying about the gear someone is using. I'm not saying consumer grade cameras would survive all their crazy treks through the wilderness, but that's different on whether they pics are good. (hey, would you not publish the photo from Mt. Suribachi just because it was a Speed Graphic and not a modern pro dSLR? It's an awesome pic, even with, a by modern standards, terrible lens)

These guys take good pictures regardless of the gear they have (just like Nadal would crush you with a racket from Kmart and you with some custom $5000 racket), because they are top notch photographers, not because of the model they carry. Remember the pictures from 5-8 years ago were good enough for NG, but were probably taken with a sensor that is likely inferior to current consumer grade cameras.

Seriously well said, again proving talent ≠ gear.

Why does it feel like you are being paid by Nokia?

I wish I was!:D

I have taken a close look at Samsung Note 3, Sony Xperia Z1 and Nokia Lumia 1020. Because I am bored with my iPhone 5, and iPhone 5s does not have enough new "goodies" for me to upgrade.

After reading numerous reviews and watching reviews on youtube as well as holding above mentioned phones in my hand - Nokia Lumia 1020 is going to be my next smartphone. The camera is outstanding! Just have to wait for my next "paycheck" before I can get my hands on it.

You can take the blind test...

iPhone 5S did a pretty good job going up against a 41mp camera.

"Lumia 1020 and its superior camera" Its not as clear as that...its great hardware limited by the SW...if you read the DP reviews they say the SW is very slow...good for landscape then but not for action shots!

How about if you quote their conclusion instead of cherry picking a line in a 10 page review?

----------

"it utilizes a sensor that has a 15 percent larger surface area, which means it will produce higher quality photos"

thanks you, author for being one of the few that realize that pixel count is not what it's all about. And in fact - packing more pixels in can often reduce a camera's overall quality.

If 15% can do such a difference, imagine what 400% can do. Now if only someone would make a phone with such a sensor...

What we see here is that Apple is genuinely worried about NOKIA LUMIA 1020!

I guess Apple "panicked when they saw how superior the camera on Nokia Lumia 1020 was. National Geographic used the Lumia 1020 and was amazed by the quality of the photos.

Now Apple try to divert from the attention Lumia 1020 and its superior camera
by suggesting users don't want to be able to set whitebalance and other stuff. I beg to differ!

Lumia is getting traction - fast!

That is a good thing for us consumers. Apple better "up their game". No, the iPhone 5s is nowhere close to the amazing quality of the Lumia 1020:s camera.

And that goes for all other smartphones to! If you are into photography (like I am) take a close look at the Nokia Lumia 1020.

Well I'm no pro photographer. So the 5S is simply awesome with a camera. Besides looking at each product, the Nokia is Hideous compared to the iP5S.

Or sometimes professionals don't want to have an SLR strapped around their neck--along with all the equipment to go with it--every time they're out and about. A decent camera on your phone that you carry with you anyway is a great way to still be able to capture a picture in an unexpected situation.

'Out and about' and in 'unexpected situations', 4000 times, in 2 weeks....

I'm not questioning the skills of the photographer, I like his work, he's simply fitting in with a current trend and like I say, slumming it with consumers to get PR.

slappy, as much as I like the look of the iPhone I think your comparison is a bit unfair to the first phone as in one case you used a real life shot (no pro gear, pro lighting, post-processing etc) and the other one is a professionally made marketing image. Just saying.
EDIT: this doesn't apply anymore as the image in the orig. post has been replaced.

The white add-on grip to the 1020 is actually really awesome accessory iPhone is missing completely, it provides more battery life, better real-phone-like handling and even a tripod mount.

BTW, I personally believe that all top smartphones are capable of shooting good enough quality photos in good light situation these days. There may be some differences but more or less it's the same quality.

The situation is however much different when it comes to low light situations like indoor photos in pub/bar, outdoor evening etc. In this case the technical limitations of smartphone cameras are unfortunately revealed, and not for good. And that's the case for Nokia Lumia 1020 as it is the only smartphone with a decent OS which has a proper sized chip and hardware image stabilization. Its main limitation seem to be its speed (or lack of) when processing taken image but I'd say that's probably down to using the older generation processor, once they update to the latest Snapdragon, even this disadvantage may be fixed. What will, at that stage, iPhone offer to beat this as a cameraphone?

P.S. Just to put it into the correct perspective, this NG guy used the 5S to take photos intended for Instagram, some weeks ago there was a story of another NG guy who used the Lumia 1020 on 10 days trip in US and his photos will be published inside the front cover of the 125th aniv NG issue... http://www.nationalgeographic.com/nokia/

No, he was purposely testing out the camera for whatever, I guess, self-serving reasons he may have had. My comment was directed towards photographers in general that don't want to always be tied to their larger cameras. My wife is a photographer. She has the Canon 5D Mark III and she loves the new camera on the 5S. She couldn't wait to get her hands on it.

Yes, I would not upgrade from iPhone 5 to 5s (I went from 4 to 5s)

I did consider a Windows phone from Nokia but the camera was not enough for me...

Well, "beauty is in the eye of the beholder".

I think the Lumia 1020 is a fresh beautiful looking smartphone! Also it needs no case, but the iPhone certainly needs one. I have an iPhone 5 and I kept it "naked" (no case) in the beginning but it is simply too slippery to get a firm grip on., After two incidents (drops) to concrete pavement - I had to buy a case...:(

Na, Lumia 1020 looks fresh and inspiring and lies nicely in the hand. No need for a case either because it is solid and not as slippery as the iPhone 5.

iPhone 5S camera comes in fifth in GSM arena testsing

Quote: "The Apple iPhone 5s comes in fifth, which is very impressive considering the competition. The iPhones were always well-rounded rather than heavily skewed towards one discipline (like the Lumia 1020 is). The 8MP stills are good, but a bit behind the times when compared to 13MP / 20.7MP / 41MP shooters. In several areas it actually beats the previous two phones and in the daylight its videos match those of the Lumia 1020. Finally, low-light performance is pretty decent and the panorama is one of the best."

They compared six phones - both still and video.

Too bad the Nokia rocks so badly on a flat surface, and has such sluggish performance, both heavy minuses for a great many potential users.

Untrue. Especially when you have a Sony RX100.

The RX100II is the premier 1 inch sensor camera for IQ, but having the Nikon V1, it's a fair trade for a MILC.

I'd easily take the compact RX100II and an iPhone 5s over a Nokia 1020 without question and with the bonus of a remote app for the RX100II.

I'm glad I didn't buy the RX100 mark II by Sony. That's the best P&S camera out there but I'm liking the iPhone 5S camera. I wouldn't know how to use all that ISO stuff anyways. The 5S is truly an impressive piece of hardware.

Right now i only have the iphone 5s with me. How is it better than my 5D?

well for this instance, say something came up and you need to take a picture, you have your iphone 5s with you, not your canon 5D. hence the best camera is the one you have with you XD

Sluggish performance? It takes a while for the high-res pictures to be saved. The phone feels every but as fast and fluid as the 5S otherwise

Sure he might know what it looked like - that doesn't mean he knows how - or cares - to make the photo match reality. I shoot real estate photography with a much better camera than the iPhone, so I've taken more than my fair share of outdoor landscapes, and I know what correct exposure and white balance looks like. This image has zero highlights and there are some areas in excessive shadow. It's just flat out underexposed. And I know what color skies, trees, mountains, and water look like in real life. Here is s rough estimate of what the white balance should have been (bear in mind I'm going off of an image heavily downsized to web resolution so I don't have nearly the editing flexibility as he had).

Compare that to the original images;

If you tell me the second one is more believable, either your lying or your monitor is badly miscalibrated.

The photographers original picture does an excellent job of conveying the feeling of an impending storm. Looks to me that you, mostly, just removed most of the contrast.

I would guess that people paying for pictures of their real estate don't want it to look like a storm is approaching.

----------

If you use Instagram, you're someone who shoots for fun, not professionally.

This is by no means a pro reviewer.

Maybe I should tell the professional photographers I know they have to stop doing it for fun too.

HAHA, Even more so, the phone hasn't even been out that long. Who shoots that many pictures in such a short amount of time?

A professional photographer who is used to shooting hundreds of pictures for each one that gets published.

But only with FANCY peanut butter. Only amateur hacks would use Jiff chunky.

Are they allowed to call that stuff Peanut Butter?
