I imagine NG doesn't care what you take the pictures on. I imagine if you took the pictures on a pinhole camera made out of a shoe box, but they were NG quality, they would publish them. They are in the business of selling a magazine with stunning nature and subject photography, not worrying about the gear someone is using. I'm not saying consumer grade cameras would survive all their crazy treks through the wilderness, but that's different on whether they pics are good. (hey, would you not publish the photo from Mt. Suribachi just because it was a Speed Graphic and not a modern pro dSLR? It's an awesome pic, even with, a by modern standards, terrible lens)
These guys take good pictures regardless of the gear they have (just like Nadal would crush you with a racket from Kmart and you with some custom $5000 racket), because they are top notch photographers, not because of the model they carry. Remember the pictures from 5-8 years ago were good enough for NG, but were probably taken with a sensor that is likely inferior to current consumer grade cameras.
Why does it feel like you are being paid by Nokia?
You can take the blind test...

"Lumia 1020 and its superior camera" Its not as clear as that...its great hardware limited by the SW...if you read the DP reviews they say the SW is very slow...good for landscape then but not for action shots!
"it utilizes a sensor that has a 15 percent larger surface area, which means it will produce higher quality photos"
thanks you, author for being one of the few that realize that pixel count is not what it's all about. And in fact - packing more pixels in can often reduce a camera's overall quality.
What we see here is that Apple is genuinely worried about NOKIA LUMIA 1020!
I guess Apple "panicked when they saw how superior the camera on Nokia Lumia 1020 was. National Geographic used the Lumia 1020 and was amazed by the quality of the photos.
Now Apple try to divert from the attention Lumia 1020 and its superior camera
by suggesting users don't want to be able to set whitebalance and other stuff. I beg to differ!
Lumia is getting traction - fast!
That is a good thing for us consumers. Apple better "up their game". No, the iPhone 5s is nowhere close to the amazing quality of the Lumia 1020:s camera.
And that goes for all other smartphones to! If you are into photography (like I am) take a close look at the Nokia Lumia 1020.
Or sometimes professionals don't want to have an SLR strapped around their neck--along with all the equipment to go with it--every time they're out and about. A decent camera on your phone that you carry with you anyway is a great way to still be able to capture a picture in an unexpected situation.
HAHA, Even more so, the phone hasn't even been out that long. Who shoots that many pictures in such a short amount of time?

My iPhone has completely replaced my P&S. There's no real reason to carry a P&S anymore.
'Out and about' and in 'unexpected situations', 4000 times, in 2 weeks....
I wish I was!
I have taken a close look at Samsung Note 3, Sony Xperia Z1 and Nokia Lumia 1020. Because I am bored with my iPhone 5, and iPhone 5s does not have enough new "goodies" for me to upgrade.
After reading numerous reviews and watching reviews on youtube as well as holding above mentioned phones in my hand - Nokia Lumia 1020 is going to be my next smartphone. The camera is outstanding! Just have to wait for my next "paycheck" before I can get my hands on it.
Besides looking at each product, the Nokia is Hideous compared to the iP5S.
Well, "beauty is in the eye of the beholder".
I think the Lumia 1020 is a fresh beautiful looking smartphone! Also it needs no case, but the iPhone certainly needs one. I have an iPhone 5 and I kept it "naked" (no case) in the beginning but it is simply too slippery to get a firm grip on., After two incidents (drops) to concrete pavement - I had to buy a case...
Na, Lumia 1020 looks fresh and inspiring and lies nicely in the hand. No need for a case either because it is solid and not as slippery as the iPhone 5.
Untrue. Especially when you have a Sony RX100.
Right now i only have the iphone 5s with me. How is it better than my 5D?the best camera to have when taking pictures, is the one you have with you.

Too bad the Nokia rocks so badly on a flat surface, and has such sluggish performance, both heavy minuses for a great many potential users.
Sure he might know what it looked like - that doesn't mean he knows how - or cares - to make the photo match reality. I shoot real estate photography with a much better camera than the iPhone, so I've taken more than my fair share of outdoor landscapes, and I know what correct exposure and white balance looks like. This image has zero highlights and there are some areas in excessive shadow. It's just flat out underexposed. And I know what color skies, trees, mountains, and water look like in real life. Here is s rough estimate of what the white balance should have been (bear in mind I'm going off of an image heavily downsized to web resolution so I don't have nearly the editing flexibility as he had).

Compare that to the original images;

If you tell me the second one is more believable, either your lying or your monitor is badly miscalibrated.
If you use Instagram, you're someone who shoots for fun, not professionally.
This is by no means a pro reviewer.
So why is a professional Nat Geo photographer using Instagram?

But only with FANCY peanut butter. Only amateur hacks would use Jiff chunky.
