Apple's annual National Parks activity challenge is set to take place on Saturday, August 27th, in celebration of national parks worldwide.

Apple will ask Apple Watch owners to complete a hike, walk, run, or wheelchair workout of a mile to earn a special National Parks award.
Let's celebrate the beauty of national parks everywhere. On August 27, earn this award by recording a hike, walk, run, or wheelchair workout of a mile (1.6K) or more with any app that adds workouts to Health.
Like all Activity Challenges, the award will be accompanied by animated stickers that can be used in the Messages app.

Apple always celebrates national parks in August, typically introducing an Apple Pay donation program, Apple TV+ content, Apple Music songs, books, podcasts, and more focused on national parks.

A mile?

1 Mile?

One mile?

FFS! I walk that far return to my nearest Waitrose! And that includes a stiff walk up the hill.
My elderly (75yo) neighbour does that every day.

Oh America… where a mile's walk is considered worthy of a digital badge of honour…

GeoLocation would be better... National Park Challenge should be in a national park, not around your neighborhood. 👨‍🔧
Agreed.

Is TikTok able to add workouts to Health? Asking for a friend. :p

Unfortunately, that would exclude 20 US states:
  1. Alabama
  2. Connecticut
  3. Delaware
  4. Georgia
  5. Illinois
  6. Iowa
  7. Kansas
  8. Louisiana
  9. Maryland
  10. Massachuesetts
  11. Mississippi
  12. Nebraska
  13. New Hampshire
  14. New Jersey
  15. New York
  16. Oklahoma
  17. Pennsylvania
  18. Rhode Island
  19. Vermont
  20. Wisconsin
And I am not sure encouraging folks to drive or fly out (increasing carbon footprint) is in the spirit of this challenge.

At least make it mandatory that the workout has to be outdoor type for this one. Just changing the number of minutes/distance isn’t a good differentiator between different badges.

The idea to complete this IN a National Park is cool...but as another poster commented, this 'excludes' 20 states including the one I live in...the closest National Park is more than 100 miles from me. Something part of the National Park System is much closer though.

We went to a National Park earlier this month and will hit another 6-7 in October but on the Aug 27th date...we will actually be in a State Park camping. and if there was a chance to complete this sometime within a month before or after would be nice too...maybe an Honorary Park badge for just completing the Mile and a second tier for actually in the park is OK.

I dont have a watch and I do not care about badges for me, so doesnt bother me one way or the other

I suppose for any disabled or elderly folks who may not as easily get OUTDOORS, this is merely incentive to get active.

What they could do is have a FREE National Park Workout for the Apple Fitness app where it could be a pre-defined park or some other Indoor activity that at least has the idea of being at a park.

Yup. Naming it something different like "Park Challenge" would be better.

Number 20 DOES have a National Park: Independence National Historic Park in Philadelphia. It has been considered a National Park for quite awhile. Previously, it had been a National Historic Site.

Not all states have national parks
Considering that America has an obesity problem, it's not bad though not much of a workout.
A little incentive helps motivate people.
The 1 mile min. limit would at least get some lazy people to just go outside to do something which is better than nothing.

Wait, I didn't know about fitness stickers available in the Messages app. Where do I find this?

yea, and when you. ride your mountain bike thru a national forest, on an official bike trail - aint getting it.
Totally fine with me, I have so many of these "special challenge" badges (27 show up) and still don't know what to do with them...

Well, going out is good for everyone. Even differently abled people go out. If someone is not in a position to go out at all, there are high chances they are not bothered about these challenges anyway.
Also, if you can’t or don’t want to perform certain activities, you can skip those. I don’t dance so skip dance challenges.
Lastly, inclusivity is good but need to consider percentages too. You can’t expect everyone to drive toy RC cars because kids can’t drive or elderly can’t drive etc.

They should give two options:
1) workout at a National Park
2) workout wherever plus a $5 donation to the National Park Foundation.
