Just so we have the list of announced features in thread (from the Navigon press release) ...

Considering the price special only runs until the end of February, I would assume Navigon is planning to have 1.5 released late February or early March. They're probably just saying Spring to cover any complications they run into with Apple's app approval process.
If anyone here stops by at Navigon's Macworld booth, ask them when they anticipate to submit the update to Apple. Since it sounds like they have a working version at Macworld, they can't be far off. Probably just putting the update through the final paces of bug testing and are planning on submitting the update in the next week or two.

Just to be clear, if all Apps have to use the Core Location Framework to determine location, whether GPS or cell ID, does this imply that individual GPS Apps have essentially the same degree of accuracy, regardless of their maps and routing capability? And will switching off data roaming when outside one's own network have any significant impact on GPS accuracy? And if so, how do regular GPS devices compensate for the lack of either Assisted GPS for start up or cell tower (or WiFi) triangulation? Just a better GPS chip?
They all get the same data. However, some apps may be more clever than others in processing them (e.g. Navigon seems to extrapolate the positioning data ahead a little bit when moving to avoid the lag which plagued some other navigation apps). It may also be possible to increase accuracy by averaging of subsequent location reports.
No, once a GPS lock is achieved the accuracy is the same. But getting a lock without assistance might take a lot longer or not be possible at all if reception is bad.
You can easily test all scenarios on the iPhone by selectively disabling WLAN and/or cellular connections (for the latter, an easy way is to set a PIN code for your SIM, reboot the iPhone, and not enter the PIN when it asks for it).
Yes, and probably more importantly better antennas than can be used in the limited space in the iPhone.
in addition, other GPS devices often use processing that "remembers" your last location when turned off and then does a quick check to see if that's the same location when it's turned back on ... helps achieve a 'quick fix' in 10-20 seconds vs. a cold fix which can take a minute or two.
I'm excited about MyRoutes, it's something I've been wanting since the app was released.
I hope it works as advertised and starts recomending some of my usual routes. Whenever I use my NAVIGON at home it recomends highway routes that are out of the way, I just go my own way and boom it instantly shaves off 10-15 mins from the trip. Not sure why it doesn't allready pick this up as the fastest route, but whatever.

I'm considering buying Navigon 1.5 but only 1.4 is currently available... so I'm wondering, can I buy now and update to 1.5 for free ?
Or should i wait for 1.5?

Yeah buy it now while it's $69.99. 1.5 will be free except for the panorama view, which would be an extra $10 bucks.
... whether you buy now or later. the discounts for nav app and traffic are good right now. good luck

Navigon has really started pulling ahead of the pack lately. Personally I'm going to hold out to see if there is going to be a universal app for iPhone / iPad before I buy a GPS Nav app. It would be great if it would drop down around $50 or less. Maybe there will be a better sale this summer when everyone goes on road trips.
yeah, i upgraded when my phone was stolen. it works perfect on the 3GS but horribly on the 3G.

I bought it yesterday and so far it seems like a ok solution. Although it's prone to get very confused when GPS reception is poor - Navigon suddenly placed me on a completely different street on several occations. tomtom seems better at avoiding this and detecting these "jumps".
Also, is it possible to change the four items on the main screen - maybe add more items or make the buttons smaller to allow more buttons?
If not, is this planned/promised for a future update?
Seems like a huge oversight otherwise 🙁

Over the last 3 months w/ 3G and 3GS, i haven't experienced this "jumping" that you are describing ... i find it to secure sat fix very well and hold it well.
No, no, and I haven't even thought about doing it (keep in mind you have Favorites, Recent, and Contact too - that's 7 functional buttons) ... so not sure i agree/ "huge oversite." My experience w/ PNDs is that the don't allow you to change the home screen buttons ... and 7 is more than i've seen on most.

I am hoping for the following "fixes" in addition to the new features;
1. Better GPS signal acquisition. I have found that Navigon is pretty helpless to maintain GPS lock unless I put my iphone all the way up against the windshield. I normally have it in a cradle at the front of the dashboard and even though Google Maps has no issue with this location and tracking Navigon constantly reports I'm on side streets or loses lock entirely.
2. Turn by Turn directions are in Navigon since 1.4 but it's ridiculous that I have to go into "options" and then scroll down and select the option to see this. A small icon on screen that brought these up quickly would be much more helpful.
3. Routing logic. I hope My Routes does something about this. My wife was nearly in tears when Navigon insisted that she get off the highway all of a sudden due to "updated traffic information" sent her down a side street and then right back into the parking lot traffic jam on the highway. I've run into numerous problems with Navigon dealing with routing poorly, my four year old Garmin with ancient FM traffic does a FAR better job.
It would be great if Navigon could polish this app and fix critical routing/traffic issues instead of pasting feature after feature in. Do we really need to Twitter and Facebook people about where we are driving to? 🙄

I'm a long time user of Motion GPS Drive, but I recently purchased Navigon with the traffic add on and I've had a short chance to compare both GPS Applications. So far I haven't had an issue with Motion X or Navigon regarding GPS aquisition and hold. However, when it comes to Navigon, I have noticed the 2nd and 3rd issues you mention.
When I'm using Motion X GPS the "turn by turn" directions are well placed and easy to get to. While I don't find it difficult (once you realize where it is) to get to it on Navigon, I do think it's slightly counter intuitive to have it in the options menu. It's also a little odd to have to scroll through all the other things to get to it.
Unfortunately, I've also seen the same routing issue with Navigon as opposed to Motion X GPS. The reason I mention the two gps apps is that they both use NAVTEQ maps so you would think they would have similar routing routines. I've found that is not always the case, and often Motion X is superior in that regard. It's strange, but that's what I've seen in my limited time with Navigon.
Lastly, I do want to mention that this isn't meant to be any sort of full comparison between the two apps. They both excel in certain areas. While it's not perfect, I have been pretty satisfied with Navigon's traffic add on, and it's been relatively accurate with its traffic notifications so far.
When i use the Tomtom car kit, i never have reception problems. I recommend getting one if you use the gps feature all the time
