I got pretty annoyed with Navigon when I was driving in Italy and Switzerland a couple of weeks ago. I would be sailing down a highway at 120 Km/h and suddenly it would screech "Turn left in 200m" - of course, at that speed, it is not reasonable to take a turn that fast, and it is just as well, because it was just a minor GPS glitch where it thought I was in a town or village alongside the highway rather than driving through it.

A little software intelligence could have prevented this - if the GPS is moving at 120 Km/h, it is highly unlikely that I have suddenly stopped being on the highway, and I am in some small side-street in a village...

It didn't just happen once or twice, it was happening ALL the time, and it became a bit of a running joke on the trip. The GPS had a very clear view of the sky, but the reception was poor at best, and exceptionally fragile.

Very disappointing - I wish Tomtom had hurried a little more with their release, as I would have bought their product in an instant rather than shelling out 99 Euros on Navigon's second-rate product.

The only time that I've had Navigon give incorrect directions, announcements or map placement is right after coming back to the program after some other activity (phone call, text, email, or using another app) and then restarting Navigon. It takes the software just a bit of time to reacquaint itself with the GPS signal lock. But, in my experience, at highway speeds all around city and rural areas of TX (at about 115 km/h), it's come back to being dead on accurate within 3-15 seconds (most of the time on the low end of that range).

GuyCalledPete, you may want to go through all the steps of the Navigon FAQ, as it's been shown by several on the MR Forums that it's not just a clear view of the sky that helps with the GPS signal. Per the FAQ, resetting network settings, and also rearranging memory (through the restore process) also helps a lot.

HTH.

Never any problem with this method

-Reboot the Iphone
-Start Google Maps and wait for GPS fix (kind of pulsar around the blue point. Should take 1 or 2 seconds only)
-Start the music if you want
-Start Navigon. the GPS fix will be immediate and you won't have any problem during your trip (except if the satellites cannot be viewed of course). :)

With this method, I never had any problem, even at high speeds (>130 km/h). I have tried to use an application to free the memory instead of rebooting the Iphone, but the result is not as good. Some running processes must be causing problems with Navigon, but I don't know which ones.

I think Navigon needs a lot of free memory and of course CPU power to perform well. If it has to request more memory during a trip, it causes a few problems (freezes, apparent loose of the GPS signal, ...)

Final Update!

Alright you guys, Im back with a final update. A couple days ago I was complaining about the Navigon app not functioning properly while riding my motorcycle, and I later mentioned I was riding with my iPhone in my pant pocket.

The other day I gave you guys a positive updated after I followed the step-by-step procedures from Navigon to improve the GPS signal. I was able to use the app while driving my car, and the app worked great.

Today the weather was nice and so I gave it anothr shot while riding my motorcycle. Once again, I put it in my pant pocket and made sure the screen was facing upward toward the sky. Amazingly, the app worked incredibly well! I am super excited because this is exactly how I was hoping it would work. The voice commands took me all the way to my destination and were very accurate.

I suggest to anybody who purchases this app to go ahead and follow the step by step procedures. It took no time at all. Erase all content and settings took under a minute (not 2 hours). I read a rumor today that Tom Tom is going to run around $200. I think $75 for Navigon is well worth the price.

Good Luck!

Also, someone provided the link on the first page for those step-by-step directions from Navigon.
