My friend has a JB iPhone and was able to get the European version for free. I tried out a demo route, looked and worked nice. I will be getting the US version once it's in the app store. I hope it's not more than $80.

Navigon or TomTom?

It would be nice if they would allow TomTom to use the Voice Control. My Garmin uses voice recognition and I never have to touch the screen while driving.
Well...judging by the Euro conversion and Navigon being a European Company, were probably looking at the $100-115 mark......I was all for it being cheap but I suppose even at that price its not bad considering it replaces another device 🙂

Does anyone know of a good comparison review between navigon on iphone and a tomtom device?
I have a tomtom one V3 and I like it because it is simple to use, recognises postcodes and has a traffic receiver that came with it.
The navigon looks sweet for the voice to text and lane assist (how good is that btw?)but no traffic and only recognises part of UK postcodes (this may be an issue for me as I often have company addresses that can just be company name, town, city postcode. I enter the full postcode on my Tomtom and I'm away. How does the navigon cope with that?)
Can anyone here say what is good and what is bad about the navigon app for me. £55 seems appealing especially as I know for a fact that the tomtom app wont have lane assist or text to speech.
How is navigon for rerouting if you take a wrong turn (something my tomtom is pretty speedy at). Tomtom also make a deal out of their intelligent routes taking into account the fastest route with thinks like traffic lights roundabouts etc - does the navigon do this? Or does it simply take the shortest distance?
Sory for loads of questions but if anyone has answers it might help me. Plus the navigon is going to go up in price on 30th June!

funny you should mention that.........
i haven't considered jailbreaking at any point with my 3g or 3g s, until now. i have an .ipa file of navigon, i assume that i have to jailbreak to get that on the 3g s.
question is, how long does it usually take for them to get their jailbroken (?) software out? i notice that ultrasnow or whatever it's called is out for the 3g, any guesses on the 3g s?

I'd say get it now, hopefully they rushed it to get it out infront of TomTom which means there should be updates coming which will fix some of the current flaws.

Thanks for this. S*d it I'm going to get it and run the tomtom and it side by side for a while (I travel so much I will know quickly if it is no good). If it works I will flog my tomtom. If not then I will chalk it down to experience. One last question does it tell you an estimated arrival time?
Navigon has been out for quite a long time for Symbian, and to my knowledge they still haven't added Traffic and Safety Cameras.
Remember, as more players join the GPS game, more competition sets in. That will, in turn, lower the price.

I agree but at this point only these two companies are interested, Garmin has a hookup with Microsoft for MS direct or whatever its called; I'm pretty sure they are expressly prohibited from developing GPS software for non WinMo phones

I agree, and I do think that people will pay $100 or more for an application like this so the price is going to be steep.
Personally I won't be getting an application for the iPhone that does GPS until it has the type of functionality of the DASH navigation system (real time traffic analysis based on actual user locations, etc).
Really?? The newest TomTom hardware satnavs certainly do have this feature in W.Europe mapping, I've seen it in action. Do you have a source?

I have a tomtom one v3 and bought th navigon app this week and have tried it out. Here are some initial thoughts:
Pros:
- The map images are really clear and sharp compared to my Tomtom. And they are pretty up to date showing road layouts in my area that have only changed within the last year.
- Lane assist is sweeeeeet (but also see my con about this below)
- Road sign display is a nice feature too
- Rerouting was very fast (faster than tomtom)
- POIs seem pretty up to date for my local area with nice clear icons
- Voice commands clear (I had the phone plugged in through an aux cable so cant comment on the speaker on the phone)
- Voice to text is really nice. I'm not sure that it will say a street name merely a road number e.g M90 (this may be incorrect as I havent fully tested this)
- I havent had any issues finding an address so far with the short post code entry system
- the price: £55 for all european maps is a pretty good deal unless they start to ask for extra fees for extras like cameras and traffic
Here are some cons:
- I cant see a way of zooming into the map a little bit when on 3D mode (your view shows quite a large area and details of turns up ahead are difficult to see. Perhaps a setting I couldnt find but a little bit frustrating
- On the screen shows you a square with the next turn e.g an arrow showing a left turn etc which is fine but when Lane asist comes on this doesnt dissappear and actually covers the nice 3D image of your turn off! (this may be because we are in UK and the symbol appears on the bottom left of the screen and all my lane assists have been for turn offs on the motorway - on the left!)
- Cant see how to turn off POIs (if indeed you can)
- I feel that a lot of the screen is wasted showing map detail away from your route (could be help with a zoom in function) tomtom is definitely better at making use of the screen space. e.g the navigon has a large bar along the bottom only showing the road name you are on (or if tapped the next road name) This could be improved
- No speed cameras
- No traffic ( I really hope that they can add this along with speed cameras at some point and not as a subscription, either as a plug in accessory as with tomtom or a one off fee)
EDIT just notice don navigon website that with their existing PDA saftware you can do TMC activation for a one off 9.95euro fee
All in all though I am very happy with the navigon and I have used tomtoms for years. there is definitely room to improve this app to make it a real tomtom killer.
Anyhoo I am doing a long journey with loads of stops at the end of this week so will definitely put it to the test then. If anyone has any specific questions then feel free to ask.
