The people choosing between 5 similar phones. All things being relatively equal why wouldn't you pick the faster one?

Because faster isn't always better in some circumstances. If it was the case we would all be using Windows Phones. The only thing that would be holding us all back would be the lack of apps.

This is typical of Samsung & other companies to try and compete with Apple.
Apple makes such quality products it's hard to show your product better then Apple products. I've always wondered when I checked out friends S3s & S4s why they seemed slower and most of all they lagged a lot. Needless to say their plastic crap and feel cheap in the hand! All but one friend that had switched from an iPhone to S4 have switched back and only did it because they wanted a Samsung's bigger screen. Turned out it wasn't worth it, but I will admit the one that has not switched back to iPhone is happy with his S4. I'll give it 6 months from now until he's fed up with Samsung & Android.:apple:

I m sure the Samsung phones are ok but obviously not what Samsung claims.

:apple::apple::apple:

Someone was trying to tell me how much better his Samsung Note 2 was than the iPhone 5. The few demos that he gave me didn't work and the excuse was that he installed some experimental OS or some other BS. The phone feels super cheap and seems very laggy, yet he traded in his iPhone for that piece of junk. He's had so many problems with it, like a broken charging connector and faulty battery and another faulty thick battery that made his phone look ridiculous. Still, he insists it's a much better device. Yeah, right.

now i'm sorry i bought a Samsung TV, can't trust a company that cheats.

----------

Do people really care about benchmarks for phones?

Not really. I don't but I do care when a company cheats at them.

Nearly All Mobile Device Makers Cheat on Benchmarks, Except Apple and Motorola
Because these two are not in direct competition with the others. iOS does not compete with Android on the basis of benchmarks. Apple competes on the whole platform experience, not per single device speed. And Motorola/Google is an advertising company, not making devices for a profit, but to advance its foothold in mobile. So everyone who is actually making nothing but the hardware for a profit is cheating about performance.

New shorter Headline: Everybody is Cheating

Why would you need too? If it runs my apps, who cares.

I suspect given the very low clock rate and more modern architecture of the A7 it would have a higher ceiling. Wait till we see the A7X in a few weeks.

I'm excited to see the results

I won't be happy if Apple kills the current 5 screen size. It's perfect for one hand use. Which is what I do 99 percent of the time. Even for browsing. Having a mobile phone that requires two hand use or even a stylus is just...backwards.

Speaking of benchmark cheating, how about the '64 bit processor and twice the power' when you only have 1 gig ram, and most programs won't even be 64 bit in a long time?

I don't really know what your point is, but it seems you're drawing the wrong parallels it would probably help to read those statements in the context.

As someone else stated, that's only part of the issue. Android is a bloated mess in comparison to iOS. I like my Nexus 4 and Android 4.3 but there's a reason why Android-based smartphones need more horsepower - Android (and thus most of the apps) is not optimized nearly as well as iOS.

I agree that Android is a bloated mess, but when you compare the Snapdragon 800 @ 2.3Ghz in the Note 3 and LG G2 (probably the most horsepower under the hood for an Android smartphone) to the Apple A7 chip at 1.3Ghz and a much smaller battery, the A7 still beats the Snapdragon 800 in most benchmarks. So not only is iOS optimized the leverage the GPU and run in smaller memory footprints, but Apple is also throwing the fastest CPU/GPU combo at it as well with the iPhone 5s.

They didn't say "when the phone runs normally it gets a benchmark score of X, but if we put it into a special battery-eating, burning-hole-in-your-pocket mode, it gets a score of X + 20%". They said "our phone gets a benchmark score of X + 20%, while our competitors only get X".

That's cheating.

When my rMBP is running games (or Neflix apparently) it uses the special battery-eating, burning-hole-on-your-pants graphics processor mode. No way I get my seven hours promised to me on the apple.com website. Are they cheating?

No, of course not. Different applications tax the hardware differently and benchmarking is an application.

So what you're really complaining about is that Samsung has optimized to an application, Apple hasn't, so Samsung is unethical and Apple again smells like roses. It's utter nonsense.

It's cheating. Not the same way, but saying your chip will be 50% faster when it's dependent on 64 bit applications is cheating. It took years for 64 bit stuff to take off on the desktop world.

adadis is english. If your talking about the REAL iPhone vs. the FAKe iPhone. They both have chinese characters. Does that make the REAL iPhone chinese? Well its made in china but its an American company.

As someone from Korean descent, I feel seriously insulted. We are not Chinese and the knock-offs you posted are Chinese made.

In fairness, because of the locked down nature of the OS, Apple hardware has less work to do. That is a factor.

Overall - every company stretches the rules to their advantage. Didnt Apple recently get the shaft for price fixing Newsstand books and what not? Thats direct scam. Where are the apologists for that fiasco or the others they've been involved with?

Just saying... every big company is shady. Apple included. Not saying they dont make good products or that they have bad service. Just saying that they arent to be viewed as a company version of St. Francis of Asisi. Geesh whizz.

I don't know which is more sad... Employing the kind of cheating that used to characterize GPU makers' approach to showing off their products about 10 years ago (perhaps especially ATI-- think RAGE FURY MAXX and Radeon 8500), or the fact that the best they could do was 5-10%.

I do however find it amusing-- albeit not surprising-- that Apple no longer engages in this sort of thing. They certainly used to use very selective benchmarks for their comparisons to Intel machines in the G3 and G4 (and to a lesser extent, even the G5) era.

The people most likely to care about benchmarks are Android fanboys. Samsung just knows their audience.

No it's nerds in general. The general population, even those that prefer Androids, don't care about benchmarks.

Some people are just convinced that Apple does no wrong. They seem to forget that they are a corporation like Samsung wanting our money, nothing more. What they did with the price fixing on book is close to theft of our money. Which by definition, far worse than lying on benchmarks...

Did you read the article? Its a fact. I am of Mexican decent and I know that you can find bootleg cd's, fake shoes, and Mexican food in Mexico. So come on guy if you are offended with facts then turn off the computer.

You're basically saying all of Korea is known for counterfeits which as far from the truth, even from your articles. If you're going to say that Koreans are known to be copying everything because of one city that is known for counterfeits then the same can be said for the United States. Go to Chinatown in New York and you'll see the same counterfeits there. Is it fair to say all Americans do is copy just because some people say fake rolex watches and fake LV purses in New York? Get over it, bootlegs/counterfeits are sold in every country.

You should turn off your computer if you cannot understand facts and yes I will take offense at your generalization based on your own assumptions. And you should feel offended if I made similar statements on Mexico.

If you're going to post pictures about Korean counterfeits, at least have the decency to post actual Korean products and not Chinese products.

They aren't made in the states. They are imported from other countries and thats the difference. If you think when someone says something negative about Korea that it implies to all Koreans then you have some issues. People say Americans are fat. Are all Americans fat? No they are not so I don't take offense because I understand and actually get out of the house.

I posted an article with Korean counterfeits in it! What else do you want?
Ok here is your proof. From Korea's largest phone maker.

No comment, you're not worth my effort or time to argue. Think what you want, as limited as that is.

Why would you need too? If it runs my apps, who cares.

Because if everything else is the same or extremely similar, why would you pay more for something slightly slower.

----------

Because faster isn't always better in some circumstances. If it was the case we would all be using Windows Phones. The only thing that would be holding us all back would be the lack of apps.

Except that's not what the article is about, it's not about the apps on Windows/iOS/Android. It's about Android manufactures (hence the title "They're Almost All Dirty: The State of Cheating in Android Benchmarks) artificially increasing benchmarks (and most importantly ones that are designed to mimic real world usage, not just "how fast can this chip theoretically go") which ends up misleading a consumer. So I'd make the same point again.

Who would willingly pay for something that's extremely similar to other options (battery life/apps/camera etc) for something that's slower? Clearly there's value in cheating, otherwise it wouldn't be worth the effort.

The land of OZ!

This is the great and powerful bullet point! (Pay no attention to the bullet point behind the curtain) ;-)
