Reminds me of a larger version of my old Casio LED watch
More like someone saying they'd rather have digital eyewear that actually looks like classic sunglasses, not some piece of low tech gear.

The old style default blank square display of the Apple Watch is more like your old black phenolic phone example.

Or this which reminds me of my old LED watch when I was at school

Funny enough no-one then said they wanted an always-on display either :)

I had one similar to that. It was bloody horrible.

Perhaps it's the memory of that crappy thing that puts me off the current Apple Watch design. :D

I had a crap car and a crap tv back then but own much nicer ones now - time to move on bud ;)
I have moved on. It doesn't mean I don't want to see improvements and more options offered. I'm also sure you wouldn't be so happy about your much nicer new car if it's looks reminded you of a 1978 Austin Allegro. :p

I would still buy the rectangular watch shape even if apple did offer a round watch form factor. They probably want the watch to match the phone in terms of form factor. Should apple offer a circular form factor watch I can only imagine the iphone shape that would go with it.

Plus ten for the neat old TV picture!

Minus ten for intimating that Apple is incapable of handling a combination of rectangular phones and circular watches... as Android and Tizen already did.

On the contrary, I and most others hated having to press a button to see the time.

The capability of an always on display was one major reason why LCDs obliterated LED watches.

The old LED watches looked nicer than the Apple Watch because they didn't have that ugly dial on the side. The Samsung bezel is a far superior dial design.

Depends on the car as obviously Mini did rather well harking back to an old school design then VW cocked it up big time resurrecting the Beetle so its a tricky art. If it reminded me of a Miura i'd be ecstatic

So you can appreciate why a lot of us would like the option for a more classically styled round Apple Watch? ;)

Aye I can but I do quite admire a direct line from companies on where they're product is going rather a scattergun or changing with the wind approach. I wouldn't bet much that this now iconic form is ever going to change and lets face it the original circular design was purely for an analogue device.

Yeah but you're diluting an icon by adding a second circular model. I really can't see it happening but hey Apple is its own beast these days. Its not like they have to worry about the competition :)

Even Cartier, which iconic Tank watch has been cited around here quite a bit as precedent for Apple's square shape, makes and introduces more round models every year than square. Even they know that if they want a larger share of the wrist wear pie, they need to do more than offer one design, and they have no problems deviating from the style that otherwise defines the brand.

Wearables, and devices designed to integrate into someone's personal fashion or design aesthetic must take those expectations of choice into consideration. Jony Ive has acknowledged as much. There's no point to have a Digital Crown either, other than Jony Ive's desire to harken back to the original function of the watch. So whether we all agree that the reason a watch is circular purely for an analogue device, or not, it has become a design people like, and expect as a choice, for many reasons.

That's like saying Apple should never have changed away from the original shape of the Mac or iPhone, nor ever offered more than one style of each.

Apple specifically called their wrist device a Watch, gave it that general shape, and pushed it as having fashion choices of material and bands. This raises expectations that say, calling it the Apple Wrist Computer, might not have :)

If nothing else, another shape option will get more people to but a second one strictly for fashion. Personally, I have a hard time buying a second Apple Watch when it looks exactly the same as the watch I already own. It would essentially replace my current watch rather than simply giving me a second option with a few more features they have added.

Are Samsung et al getting badgered on their Forums for a square watch or would the fandroids think they would be accused of selling out / copying Apple which I presume will happen here the moment Apple (ever) did a circular one ?

I think all that would happen if Apple released a round watch is lots of people would buy it. :D

Maybe Apple should hold back on the idea because it could cause the first bout of outrage on the forum.:p

FYI For those playing at home, round watches existed before Samsung.;)

What are you talking about? Samsung, and most of the others had a square watch before Apple even got into the business. If anybody is copying, it's Apple then.

Oh yeah? Then Samesung should be #1 since between the nearly 100 different phones they release each year, they sell more total phones than Apple.

its not hard to be number one in a niche market where you can farm your own pretentious existing owners

Looks like I am not going to be surprised then lads (and lasses) - Maybe next year for that mythical round Apple Watch ?

despite in no way looking similar, unless square or rectangle is the only design feature you see.
