Had my iPhone 5 since launch day. It had a couple of nicks out of the box, not a big deal. Since then nothing has been added to it and I'm riding it naked

Pics would really back this up.

Mine's in a case but nonetheless was delivered with a small imperfection by one of the speaker holes and along where the sim card tray sits. I looked it over TWICE before noticing these two things. You wouldn't notice if I didn't point them out.

Mine is the same way - white iPhone, but it had nicks and marks along the edges. I just had to have it replaced, so I have a new one now but I agree with OP.

You have a defective stock prone to scuffing from the beginning, you should've gone to Apple Store and not wait for a week (unless you want this get posted here).

To be fair to the OP, how was he supposed to know his pristine iP5 out of the box was prone to scuffing from the beginning? People who get iP5 with defective anodizing coating but are flawless out of the box aren't going to find out until after a week or two when the black rubs off prematurely with normal wiping or from sliding in and out of the pocket.

Exactly, found sister's iPad, enroute with pictures.

You'll have to zoom in, couldn't get good macro shots with the iPad.

Don't confuse scuffs for sweat/fingerprint marks.

Fair enough if all the scuffing in his case happened just today! Am not gonna believe if that's the case. :D

I have several days (since I got my iP5 for a few days only) to go so I could test /check it myself :D.

OP's pics now show minor nicking but I think its from non-careful use of the device.

How in the world could it be? I'd have to grind my phone hard against a table or something, at an angle! I just tried doing that on a non effected part and it didn't so anything. Additionally my finger nails don't scratch it at all.

Look at photo 3 its a half an inch wear of the anodization... not in the device or anything its like paint rubbed off.

So when exactly it started to scuff (even the the tiny bit)? And you did not see the existing gigantic thread? ;)

https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1445493/

less clutter in the board, same effect if we will use that thread for the same issue^*

We have four scenarios going on:

1) iPhone 5 arriving predamaged out of the box (with nicks and scuffs) but with normal anodizing coating
2) iPhone 5 arriving predamaged out of the box and also has defective anodizing coating
3) iPhone 5 arriving flawless out of the box but with defective anodizing coating
4) iPhone 5 arriving flawless out of the box with normal anodizing coating

Scenario #3 is what's catching people by surprise.

So when exactly it started to scuff (even the the tiny bit)?

I noticed one little tiny part a few days after I got it. I figured it probably was there since I got it and was lucky that my phone wasn't dented or bent in half so I didn't think anything of it.

Now however the top and bottom parts show silver on the edges as if I had banged it on a table sideways.

It doesn't explain why the rest of us who carry our black iP5 naked in our pockets still have flawless metal band after a week or two. Showing the silver underneath just from sliding in and out of a pocket is indicative of defective anodizing coating (same with the black rubbing off just from regular wiping).

You just keep saying that over and over but anodized aluminum is not very durable.

Just wait for the next few months.:p

Yeah that definitely sucks, sorry to hear you got a defective one. I'll be interested to see how this affects resale value of these phones. I could sell my 4S right now, tell the buyer I used it for a week, and you wouldn't even know the difference. It's that mint. But this...not so much. People may not care, but I probably would.

To be clear I'm not angry or about to go like try and get a return, I like wear on my devices, it makes them original to me, kinda in a way. I just wanted to see if anyone has similar issues.

Obviously if it rubs off after a few months that's normal, but if the black is rubbing off simply from normal wiping or sliding in and out of the pocket that's obviously not normal. It's been only one or two weeks for some people, not a few months.

Let me rephrase what I meant by nicks.

The part where its slanted, it's wearing down or something. Silver is showing in bright lines in the edges. Not something than can be caused by a drop or scraping it. It's like the coloring is wearing off.. that's why I thought it was my hands.

----------

Also I don't have a camera in my house right now. My sister has her iPad at school, and the only other camera I know of is my phone. I'll have to post pictures later.

Silver showing through on the edges is typical of what any of the black iPhone 5 units will show in the month ahead, if unprotected. You just got a little head start.:)

The others are in denial!

It's pretty evident you don't know a lot about the anodization process, or even what anodization is, except from what you've read on these forums.

I'll just put this out here and say I rubbed the edge and back of my phone down vigorously with steel wool (&waxed and finished it) and it's not showing silver at all.

Why are you in denial that defective anodizing coating is not a possibility? You cannot compress a few months into a week or two when it comes to normal wear and tear with anodized coating.

I've had mine 2 weeks. It's perfect. Oh wait, it's in a light "Speck" case. :)
In the past having a case has been great when it's time for trade in or re-sale.
:)

It reminds me of that thread who did an extreme tests (really flawless stock passed his tests :D) in a B&M store, lol.

i just think some have weaker coats of it.

my coworkers 2 year old scratched the hell out of his, and there is NO SILVER showing. its a deep scratch too.

ill see if i can get a pic

If you've been super careful and you can't recall anything causing this... maybe someone did it. I assume of course we all know these new iPhones don't scuff themselves, right?
