You can infer from the Apple web site that the white is anodized.

Anodize *this*, buddy.

http://www.cultofmac.com/192781/app...chips-scratches-on-black-iphone-5-are-normal/

Are there any other misinformed, ignorant statements you'd like to make before I accept your mea culpa in advance? Or will you just stop posting because you've just proven my point about not knowing what you're talking about?

So you only know what you read on the Internet even if the source is wrong? Apple website says that the back of iPhone 5 is made of anodized 6000 series aluminum, the same material used in Apple notebooks, on both black and white versions.

I noticed one little tiny part a few days after I got it. I figured it probably was there since I got it and was lucky that my phone wasn't dented or bent in half so I didn't think anything of it.

Now however the top and bottom parts show silver on the edges as if I had banged it on a table sideways.

I say take it to Apple... this isn't normal wear and tear and clearly you didn't drop it. They should replace it. I'm thinking there was just a bad batch of casing for the phones.

Mine is in good shape... There was a tiny scuff at an antenna edge out of the box but it wasn't a deal breaker for me. I've kept min in a case ever since I got it. No scratches at all so far. The phone is so thin now that having a case on it doesn't really bother me like on my older phones.

You need to do some homework. It is not defective. The anodization WILL WEAR, like it or not.

Just wait and see:p

Agree its not defect...it a cheap quality case on the IP5. Anodized =Crap, Aluminum = Soft Crap

Put a case on your IP5, dont use it naked or you will have regret pretty fast.

The IP5S will fix this with some sort of ruggedized case.

Mine is in a case around 50% of the time. I remove the case quite frequently (don't like it but I get nervous when using the phone over concrete). Still looks brand new.

So you only use a case when you're near concrete? That's really weird.

Gone naked just after launch and still look perfect

what i dont understand is how are they nicking? when i got my phone in the mail launch day, my gf recorded me opening it in case it had lots of nicks or messed up scartches. it was flawless, i already had my case, put my case on so now today, it wasnt dropped once i take the case off and theres a nick on top... how is it happening!

Having to cover the iPhone 5 to protect it's rather vulnerable exterior speaks very poorly of Apple. Either unable, or unwilling to deliver a Phone that has an average level of durability is something only Apple could get away with. It's amazing the power & control they have.

Its "Magical & Revolutionary."

Mine has been getting nicked too, but I don't really care. I care about the screen being scratch free, the battery life being great, and the software working and being snappy. My iPhone is keeping me happy on all that.

You're rushing to conclusion, as usual. Many of us have iPhone 5 that are holding up just fine because it has normal (rather than defective) anodizing coating.

I have a difference experience. Launch unit was dinged OTB but had it replaced. New unit has remained in great condition except for one small ding along the top shiny edge from me hitting my keys against it (Doh).

I think if you are careful enough to not place your phone in with other objects that could damage it, keys, coins etc. It should hold up well.

i see this now lol.

It's as if this new material Apple is using is deteriorating fairly easily.

So claims an iPhone 4S user. It's the defective anodizing coating that is deteriorating fairly easily. The rest of us have iPhone 5 that still look as good as new, although this may not be true one year from now when the (normal) anodizing coating is subject to wear and tear.

There is a flaw with the iP5: THE END USER

Mine is perfect. It works great, makes calls, takes nice pictures, and is faster than my 4S was by leaps and bounds... Are there things I wish it had? Sure: I wish it shot laser beams and printed money, but I guess I'll have to wait...

Nowhere did Apple state the phone was flawless, that aluminum would never scratch, that it would never have a speck of dust under the screen or a bad pixel... Even though all electronics do (even the precious 4S).

If you don't want an iPhone 5, DON'T BUY ONE. If you bought one and you don't like it, TAKE IT BACK!

Sound familiar? The 4 had major "problems" at launch (that were NEVER addressed by the way... outside of a rubber band "bumper" and reminders to people that GLASS BREAKS EASILY). Fast forward to today and people absolutely adored the "quality" and "weight" of the 4/4S... Wasn't so rosy when it launched though...

There is nothing extraordinarily wrong with the iPhone 5. It's not perfect, nor would any rational person expect it to be. It will be the greatest selling iPhone ever.

:::NEWSFLASH::: Aluminum is SOFTER than stainless steel. It also will not SHATTER when dropped and is lighter (which is presumably why they chose it over glass and steel). If you absolutely cannot live with minor cosmetic imperfections, I'm not certain how you function, but I would certainly reccomend against an iPhone 5.

This iPhone just won't be for certain people. No biggie. there are lots of options (including the 4S, which they still make, and if you listen to the forum never ever scratches or ever has problems, ever... heck it may even print money, I haven't checked because I have been so busy enjoying my 5).

:apple:

Rather than make accusations based on assumptions & guesswork, the average Apple worshiper would do well to get into acceptance. Apple is not perfect, yet in your minds you have them on a pedestal. Denial is a very powerful way to look right past anything that fails to live up to reasonable standards.

Much like the very well known, ever present Apple Hyposcrisy, I do understand why some choose to implement this way of thinking. At the end of the day it's the worshipers that have to baby the phone anyway.

over a week later and my phone looks exactly as it did out of the box. ive just been making sure i put it in a pocket by itself.

I received a pristine iPhone 5 in the mail, nearly two weeks later is is nicked all over the band that is at a slanted angle. I'm pretty careful with my devices, and these nicks are not gashes or anything of the sort.

I think the anodized coating is sensitive to sweat or grease. I have very sweaty hands and the part where the phone touches my ear/head when I'm on the phone is significantly worn.

Anybody seeing similar issues?

Your fault for not getting a protector...I use Ghost armor...Dropped several times, bang up against a chair and other abuse. Still looks brand new out of the box...I also keep in pockets with change and other items

Well if you guys would either just get ghost armor or a case for your phone, you would not have scratches on it as quickly. All you guys seem to not care or can't stand cases on your phone because you want to show off to everybody that you upgraded. Big deal. Get your case and you will not scratch it or get full body ghost armor To protect it if you decide to go without a case. Descent cases can be purchased at Best Buy, cases.com, and other places on the Internet. Just get you a small case then you will not scratch it up. I have a black and red OtterBox on my phone so I will not mess it up Along with a couple of cases from Best Buy.

this is what happens when you don't take care of your devices people. get a case.

Bought @ retail day one. One small nick in the bezel out of the box. Two weeks with no case of any kind, no more marks. Seems pretty durable. Even took it on a weekend trip where it spent time on the front seat and in my pocket.
