Question: why wouldn't everyone just buy with Next (if they have a MSVP and are saving $15-$25), then pay off the rest of the phone whenever they want? You avoid activation and upgrade fees by using Next. Am I missing something here?

Just based on the customer feed back, some of the reasons that people don't go to the Next plan is: The loss of their unlimited data, they have less than 10gbs of data and aren't gonna get the 25 dollar discount, loss of unlimited data, hate the idea of "financing a phone", loss of unlimited data, oh and loss of unlimited data lol. Tbh, if you're on the 10gb plan and don't necessarily have to have an upgrade exactly every year...the Next 18 is a pretty decent option IMO. No upgrade fee, cheaper up front cost for phone and your bill would increase by only 2 dollars (assuming you're getting one of the usual suspects iPhone, Galaxy S5, ect)

Haha yeah I see what you mean. Seems like it'd be a good idea for me on our family plan, since I usually upgrade every year. The thing is though, if I'm going to have to pay full retail for the phone anyway, I might as well go for the Next route, since I avoid additional fees, and have the flexibility of continuing with monthly payments, or buying it outright whenever I want.

I have an AT&T plan for 3gb,450min and unlimited text which is $90. For a 2 yr contract you pay $199+$2160.
Going to next, a 2gb mobile share plan with unlimited talk n text is $65. So buying the device $649+$1560 is cheaper. Now if u paid monthly payments you can always sell ur phone after a year for $500 and buy the new phone without ever worrying about a contract.
I'm planning to switch to next. Let me know your thoughts!

On a family plan, and I'm the only one who upgrades every year, and I usually can sell my phone and break even or close to it when I get the latest. I was thinking of using Next if I ended up not having an upgrade to use in the family plan.

According to BestBuy where I'll be getting the 6, there are 3 upgrades available which they thought was odd since 2 of the three lines had only upgraded less than a year ago. Hopefully it works out since 2 of us will be getting the iPhone 6 this year.

I think that is an over thinking, i agree we have to wait for the official release date after this we can take the decision of buying an iPhone 6, I am sure every people can easily get an iPhone 6 so don't worry about pre-ordering.

I work at AT&T and would recommend AT&T Next if you're on the Mobile Share Value plan. It's nice to be able to upgrade your phone every year and there are less upfront charges since you're only paying the tax on the device. Most people pay about $51 in the store with no upgrade fee when they upgrade with Next vs $200 plus tax in store and a $40 upgrade fee. If you're on the MSV plan the savings are already built in. In the long run, most people end up paying the same or less when they upgrade with Next.

I'll also have to wait for pricing. I don't have an upgrade due. So I'll have to pay £350/$580 to upgrade and then whatever subsidy on top to get the iPhone. I'll want the highest capacity available (64/128) and I'm not 100% in the screen size yet. So in the end it may be cheaper/more cost effective for me to just buy the phone out right. I'll have to see the pricing and weigh up my options.
