Sounds good, but is there a reason that you connect Airport Ex to your current router instead of replacing it? (or are you talking about the modem itself? (having the built-in router))

I went and bought Asus RT-AC87U =)

not really, just my home network is set up and hard wired through my existing Virgin Media hub with settings put in for me and i don't want to adjust/change anything. I'm completely un-technically minded in these issues (Floris's reply up there is in a foreign language to me) and only want quick easy solutions. just adding the Extreme to the end of my existing line seems a easiest more logical route :)

i dont know the difference between a modem, router and hub to be honest, all i know is my single black internet box is called a hub and my home network plugs into it and it gives me wifi and a hard wired network linking my 3 pc's up. :)

You dont need to worry about tech stuff with Airport Extreme. It isnt the latest and greatest, but the latest model still offer 802.11ac and "mimo". It is easy to use, just plug it in, easy setting up and then start surfing... it doesnt offer some functions which you propably wont need anyway. It was a good choice.
