While not always an option the best way to learn is to work with/for people much smarter and more experienced than you. While the internet has helped close many of the knowledge gaps there are still many things that you'll only pick up though on the job experience.

I need to learn after effects... this is almost an industry standard now-a-days and a pretty awesome tool.

So true. I noticed this at a school environment as well. I teach at a local college (FCP, AE & Maya) and watching the students interact with each other I envy. I dont have anyone at work to bounce off the higher end stuff :p The internet is my only source for that :(

I'm in that boat. I wonder if there is a way to create some sort of virtual workplace for us to work together and collaborate in real-time in? That would be incredible.

Back in the day that was IRC. I would work with folk across the world and the convo was real time. Im sure I can do that now but finding time to just watch tutorials online/DVD is rare.
I did NAB to recharge my batteries on my own dollar (not company).
I do get some of it from the students (night class) and if I did more freelance I guess Id be learning more too.
Its great when your starting out but also hard due to finances.
I miss the days when Id let my Powermac 6100AV render out a 2 second animation over night just to watch it barely play at school ;)
