THAT DID IT!

I used Rufus to make a FreeDOS USB, put a Radeon 7000 in the PCI slot, set the graphics to PCI in the BIOS of my old Athlon 64 based HP Pavilion, and used ATIFlash 3.89 to flash the ROM from MacRumors to the card. I actually didn't need HDPMI32.EXE since the versions of ATIFlash prior to 4.xx work without it.

Getting to the boot screen takes a bit longer now, but everything works perfectly and the card scores 16,040 in OpenMark. It was a long road, but I couldn't be happier with the result. Thank you to everyone for their help and suggestions!

Hi, I want to give it a try with the same setup you have used, i.e. an old Athlon 64 system and ATI 7000 PCI GPU. What is the correct flashing command then? Will it be “atiflash -f -p 0 X1950MAC.ROM“? Thanks a lot.

Hi guys, I bought an PC X1900XT with 512MB Ram on ebay and would like to know if I can flsahen it? would be very grateful for help, as the card is not recognized in my g5 Quad.

I understood that the Intel MAC Cards cannot be flashed, what about the PC Cards?

No one that I know of has made a 512MB FCode ROM for the X19xx, but it is doable as long as you card has a GPU that is compatible with the FCode ROM.

What is the Device ID of your card?

Joe and I are looking at the soft straps in the ATI VBios ROMs to see if they can and need to be moved over to the FCode ROM.

With nVidia the soft straps set the amount of VRAM, so it could also be the case on ATI too, but there could be some stuff deeper down too.

Generally speaking the 512MB X19xx have slower VRAM, so it would only improve things in cases where the demand for VRAM was greater than 256MB( like Doom 3 on Ultra settings ).

I cranked up Doom 3 to 6x AA and 16x AF to the highest quality setting @1080P and that put me in the need for more VRAM.

Any updates on this. Unfortunately I am only in possession of the 512MB version of the Sapphire 1950 XT.

Normally you can flash the 512MB cards and they will just work as 256MB cards until somebody figures it out. Just take care what device ID you have and edit the rom to match that device ID.

Somebody should know the list of compatible GPUs( Device-IDs ) so post your device ID and a ROM may magically appear, and one day maybe a new full 512MB ROM.
