The charger works when I plug in my iPad though?

If you want to be sure, do this:

1) Jailbreak

2) Use iPhone explorer, or ifunbox, to navigate to var/mobile/library/sms and copy the sms.db file to your computer.

There, now you have the actual file, and can drop it on any iPhone whenever you want, or use alternate readers to view the texts.
 
Phoneview uses the Backup to get it’s info, if it’s like all the other non-JB software out there (like iPhone Backup Extractor, which is free). So, no backup, no workie.

I don't think this is accurate, though I don't pretend to be an expert. I used PhoneView to download a text message conversation to a computer that did not have any iPhone backups on it.
Ditto for a voice message.
And sometimes the reason to save messages is purely sentimental. In my case, my sister died this past year and I have voice messages and text messages from her that matter to me.
