Got it to work. This is what you need to do. Hit F2 right away to boot into bios, and set the CD drive to boot first. With the vista dvd in, select the clean install option, delete the D drive and expand the C drive (for some reason this laptop was supposed to come with an 80 GB, but I got a 100!), and install vista. Because the install works differently and just expands vista onto your hardrive, after it installs and reboots, you must hit F2 before it boots to the CD again, or you are reinstalling vista again. You then set the Hard drive as number one in the boot order, watch it reboot to the hard drive and vista finishes the install. XP is considerably easier to install, but vista has it on speed.

Now get 1GB of RAM.

Trust me. I work at a Best Buy, and we see returns on these 400 dollar laptops all the time because it was too slow because Vista eats memory like its candy and they didnt bother to get the RAM upgraded when we had the promotion going on.

Thanks for the pointers.
No problem. Make sure to catch the the swtich back to the hard drive. I ended up installing vista three times. Also, there is no need to wait for the dvd to come in the mail (i think that's what you said earlier). The upgrade dvd that seems like it is only for the upgrade to home premium or ultimate includes basic. Best buy tried to charge me an extra thirty for it.

I'm keeping my iMac my primary machine. It's slow to boot, but that's fine. I wanted something cheap so that if my hotel room is broken into I wont cry over it. The hotel dps puts out for is okay, but central phoenix is not a nice neighborhood. My brother in law is with the department, and he said their old hotel was worse, a days inn, had prostitutes and drug deals going down every night. I bought it because I didn't think I could go six months in a hotel room without a computer. I want to stay in touch with family and friends.

The upgrade is from XP to vista.

No one...

Can give me crap for buying this pc. This is the first one I've owned, mac person my whole life. It's going to serve it's purpose, which is what I need. The iMac is for fun and speed when I need it. Acer support really sucks. They just emailed me back and told me to buy norton ghost because they don't provide a vista install cd? Really, seems like I did it just fine. I think its actually a nice machine for what I paid for it. 431 including tax.

Not only does support suck...

so does their driver download site. Take two minutes to download a driver, and you can basically do one at a time (if i click a second link, it says it is gong to take five hours!)
