Will echo Brother. Onto my second one as the old one was no longer compatible with newer MacOSes. Using a 2350DW currently.

And scanners: yeah, I too use Notes as not needing complex scanning. A page or two here every now and then. Can also scan via Dropbox, OneDrive, Google Drive, Adobe Scan, etc, etc. Lots of options if needs are simple.
Another benefit of the 48 Mpxl camera. Damn good scans. Mine does edge detection and perspective adjustment. Makes the docs more "presentable".

I bought the Brother HLL2305W to use with infrequent printing with my Mac. I love it so far.

Thanks to all for specific models. I have some shopping to do.

My wife, an attorney who prints a lot, bought a Brother HL-1210W for home use.

It's OK, but she keeps having to remove and clean the drum. This is a pain and seems like something that shouldn't have to be done every few weeks.

Also annoying is the fact that the "toner low" flashing LEDs (red and green) indicator seems to come on when the toner is down to 1/3 capacity. This prevents printing, even though the Brother FAQ indicates otherwise: "The machine continues printing until the LED indicates Toner Ended". But, if you unplug the printer and plug it back in, the LEDs stop flashing and the printer works again. This I don't understand and seems contrary to the information in the FAQ.

Sometimes the printer LED indicates a paper error when there is none. If the status monitor indicates a jam, you can clear this by removing and replacing the toner cartridge; even when there is no jam at all.

The best laser printer we've ever had is a Canon LBP6000 which we bought when we first moved to Thailand in 2005. It's still going strong. It prints flawlessly, even with non-genuine toner cartridges. The only problem it has is that the rollers have hardened and sometimes have trouble gaining traction on the paper. If I weren't so clumsy I'd try to figure out how to roughen them up a bit.

I never (well, rarely) print so all of this is what my wife reports.

Agree. I'm sick of ink jet printers. As you noted, ink carts just don't stand up to aging. And there are only a few grams of ink, in spite of the size of the cart. I see Epson is selling a printer with large inkjet cartridges so things may go in the other direction.
At this point I would consider a color laser.

Agreed. Ink jets just suck. I've had an HP Laserjet for 11 years now and it's still going strong. It's also a compact model that resembles ink jets in form factor. This is probably right up your alley, but they don't make it anymore. Oh wait... Amazon has one for sale. One!

It does AirPrint and it was a bit of a pain to set up on a Mac from what I recall, but there were tips in the Amazon listing's reviews and questions sections that got me through it.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm leaning towards the Brother. It looks like it will fit my space better.

No doubt a good choice if you do. Brother is better known for being friendlier with Macs. When this HP dies, I'll be considering Brother myself.

Another vote for Brother - I have a (now discontinued) HL-L2360DW and it's been an inexpensive, reliable printer for both my Mac and PC for years. I'm pretty low volume, but I've had it for almost 8 (?) years and it's still chugging along just fine.

If you're still in Thailand, it should be cheap to get the rollers fixed. I had my rollers fixed on an HP Laserjet after a lizard crawled into the printer while I was printing (yuck!). It was about 500 THB.

:D I've found a lot of weird stuff inside equipment I was servicing but never a lizard. Usually just food and paper clips and the occasional dead roach.

If you're in Thailand, there are small lizards that run around everywhere in a house. They like getting into printers. And getting killed in printers too. I always keep my printer covered now.

Good idea. They probably are attracted to the warmth.

In my hospital we had EKGs that the staff would go from bed to bed doing the tests. The machines were flat so the staff put their coffee cups on the machines. And routinely spill coffee into a $1500 printing assembly. We finally had to put blocks under the machines and tilt them up to about 45 degrees. No more coffee spills. :)

It seems a lot of low-cost printers these days are switching to ink subscriptions as a source of revenue. This began with ink-jets, where it's all but standard practice, but it also appears to be happening with laser printers. Inks dry out, so there's at least an argument that having new ink cartridges monthly may be an advantage. I don't think that can be justified with toner, unless there's something unusual about it.

I would avoid any printer that requires a toner subscription, especially if the toner is ONLY available as a subscription. A printer that offers toner cartridges for single purchase is the way to go.

I've never had a toner cartridge expire or "go bad", even after years of being installed. If a toner cartridge expires just because it's past the end of the subscription, then that's a needless recurring cost, especially in low-volume uses. Even if the printer costs a bit more up-front, the recurring costs won't be an ongoing drain.

There was a time when the HP brand stood for something, but that was a long time ago.

Now, they pull shenanigans like this.

"HP+ requires an HP account, Internet connection, and use of Original HP Ink or Toner for the lifetime of the printer. Once activated, HP+ is embedded in the device and will require the use of Original HP Ink or Toner for the lifetime of the printer."

What sort of place did you take it to get fixed? I live in Korat, about 250K northeast of Bangkok. I'm not sure about finding a place that would deal with an old Canon printer.

Not many house geckos here as we have a cat.

Edit: Turns out replacing the paper pickup roller isn't that difficult. I'll give it a try.

Great question. I took it to Advice originally since I know they do repairs (https://www.advice.co.th/ , they have offices everywhere here and Laos). They wouldn't touch it since they didn't sell it to me, but they referred me to a local repair shop.

I live in Kanchanburi myself, which isn't a big town. Korat is huge compared to here. I'm sure there's a repair place in Korat, after all, you have Immigration Offices and schools, and there's some local person who they take their printers to repair them.

Thanks. The Advice here is closed “temporarily” for some reason. May Day Book does printer repair.

But, after watching a couple of You Tube videos I think I can replace the Paper Pickup Roller myself. I ordered one from Shoppee for less than 100 baht including shipping.

You might be surprised what an odd place Korat is for being such a large town. I’ve lived here 18 years and have zero friends and almost no human contact. It’s the loneliest place I’ve ever lived.

I never been to Korat myself, only drove through it on my way to Lao. I know it is a popular place to retire for westerners. Might be a long shot, but have you tried joining groups though www.meetup.com ? I know you legally can't volunteer without a work permit/ Non-B visa (stupid Thai laws!), but maybe some places would let you volunteer illegally as well?

Just throwing some ideas out there for you.
