This is where I'm at currently on my 7+ 128Gb, I'm getting a X 64Gb on Fri so still need to free up some space. Will the photos bit, as I use iCloud photo library, reduce once I recover from an iCloud backup as it will see I only have a certain about of space and adjust accordingly?

I presume as currently it sees a lot of spare space it doesn't matter at moment? So once I do an iCloud restore will the photos space technically be 0 until I start using it?

I'm not sure about that, but if I were you, I would have gone for 256GB...

Ummmed and ahhhhed, so expensive here in UK so thought I'd go with that as have iCloud 2Tb plan, and do have quite a few big apps, some nearly 3Gb that I could do without really on my iPhone

It’s only a difference of £150. Clearly, based on your usage, 64GB is too small for you.

Considering the price of the phone, paying just a bit more for 4 times the storage seems reasonable to me, especially if you plan to use it for years. That's why I got a 256GB 8+ even though I've been surviving with 64GB for the past 3 years. But maybe you plan to replace it next fall anyway.

I understand but I looked into this before choosing. Too late, rather have a 64Gb X on launch than wait now so I have to do this.

I was lazy with my 128Gb so just need to tidy up a bit that's all

You seem to be taking up an awful lot of space with Photos even though you have iCloud storage available. Under the settings for Photos are you set to ‘Optimise iPhone Storage’ or ‘Download and Keep Originals’. Setting to the former should save you a tonne of device storage space

I had a 128GB iPhone and moved to a 64GB for over a month. Mostly was photos and iMessage taking up space. With Photos being cloud based and iMessage going there I don’t think it’s a big deal using 64GB for myself.

Curious though OP - 60GB of apps seems like a lot. I’d use this as a chance to go through and clean out old apps you aren’t using.

Photos will dynamically adjust quite a bit based on storage available. When using a 128GB iPhone my Photos slowly grew to taking up 60GB. I switched to a 64GB iPhone last month and it’s been sitting around 20GB.

It is on optimise yes, I just think as I've been flicking through photos and videos it downloads them if space. As I've had a lot of space on this 128Gb it's just left them there.

That's my real question, will this 21Gb "disappear" when I restore from a iCloud backup, as then it starts again, ie if I click on a photo or video it will download if space there

But maybe you plan to replace it next fall anyway.
Yes probably will, have done most years
OP since u knew u had 128gb, why did u order a smaller size for the x?
See above, price, didn't need 256Gb over kill for me, have iCloud 2Tb, been lazy with 128Gb, use iCloud photos so it dynamically adjusts, thought 64Gb would be easier to get on release day, got apps never used that are 3Gb (again as could because of 128Gb), downloaded music as could, I can just stream, list goes on....

I'm sure that you can get it down below 64GB before your new phone arrives, but then you're always going to be managing that 64GB limit. I'm just saying that for me, even though I can't imagine I will ever fill 256GB, it seemed worth the extra money to never have to worry about it.

For all intents and purposes, 256GB to me feels like having unlimited storage! I figured that was worth a bit extra.

How big is the actual photos library in iCloud? The 20GB should reduce but not to 0 as it still needs to store the thumbnails locally. If it is 30GB library will need roughly 1.5GB

Its around 100Gb now.

So no matter how large it is it needs thumbnails as you say, so every 30Gb of iCloud library needs approx 1.5Gb yes? so I should need about 5-6Gb yes?

Yeah it always caches thumbnails on the device. I remember reading that it uses 2.5% of the full library as a minimum. From experience mine uses roughly 1.5GB per 30GB. I reckon that if you mostly have video that it will need less on the phone because it only needs one thumbnail per video and every photo needs a thumbnail. I would say you will be ok with 5GB for your current library.

Ahh this was a huge mistake. Without question you should have gone 256gb. You are managing storage from day 1
No I class as I've been lazy with the 128Gb as before this one I had 32Gb. I just let Apple install all its apps, Keynote etc which I've never used, as above didn't really realise I had 60Gb of apps, loads can go

FWIW, my iCloud Photo Library is 400GB, and while using a 128GB iPhone it was occupying upwards of 60GB locally.

~6 weeks ago I moved to a 64GB iPhone and restored from iCloud backup. I can’t recall how much storage was used after the initial thumbnail & favourites download, but at this point it’s using ~7GB locally.

great so it does what I was expecting, ie after a restore reduce what it was using and look at what device its on now as such.

So why did you go from a 128Gb to a 64Gb please? How much were you using on your 128Gb, and what did you need to do to reduce overall size used please

thanks

In early/mid September when we got close to the iPhone Event I had my 7 Plus up for sale. I had an excellent offer and sold it as I had a 64GB 6s to fall back on to use until the new iPhone was released. So I’ve been using that as I wait for the X.

Anyway, on my 128GB 7, I was using ~100GB. Not purposely trying to use it, but Photos and iMessage grew quite a bit. Seeing how easy it is to use a 64GB device over the past 6 weeks, I’m quite happy going with a 64GB X, especially since my other storage culprit (iMessage) can be either lowered to 30 day local retention or moved to iCloud (which didn’t make the 11.0 cut but will happen sooner rather than later).

Do you really use ~60GB worth of apps? I mean, geez.

Yeah, exactly. Obviously OP doesn't use all the apps cause theres 12 gigs worth of practically unused apps, i see ;)

But its a good point though, I hope Photos pushes off the oldest pictures to iCloud and just keep some thumbnails on the device. I got a 64 GB aswell. Currently on a 64 GB iPhone 6 and I'm doing fine

That's great info, it's hard to come across stuff like this. I've been wondering what larger libraries use for a while.
