I don't feel like writing a big thing so I'll just dot point.

  • NeoOffice 2.2.5 is much faster on my Core Duo MBP than the RC2 of OpenOffice.org
  • OpenOffice.org does use Java
  • OpenOffice.org uses pinstripes
  • They both might use Java but they're aren't written in Java entirely
  • They require a computer with a sufficient amount of RAM
In OOo I disabled Java. The app loads within 2 seconds on my Core Duo MBP.

Would you mind posting how I effectuate this change? In the Preferences? And as I'm not familiar still with OO, what benefit is lost by disabling Java? Thanks.

It's in Preferences > General > Java. I just did it in NeoOffice; I'll see how it improves my experience, if at all.

OpenOffice.org uses Java for some specific functionality (see here for details http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Java_and_OpenOffice.org). For most normal things, Java won't be invoked.

NeoOffice uses Java as a replacement for X11 for OpenOffice. In other words, they use an OpenOffice build that should require X11, but they have somehow inserted Java in there to present the user interface on the Mac without using X11. I'm assuming they developed Java classes that somehow interact with native methods.

In short, if you hate Java, OpenOffice.org uses it sparingly for specific functionality while NeoOffice requires it since Java provides the magic for them to port the X11 version of OpenOffice to Aqua.
