NICE!!! Thanks for your help!!!

All the options listed above are a good backup!

The reason why iPhone doesn't show up in the finder is because it is connected to Edge or 3G network at the time you connected it to your computer.

Edge or 3G don't have/create static IP's for your phone.

The best thing to do is to create a network with your mac and then connect to it in your iPhone (you can also try connecting to any wifi network if available)

And Voila, your iphone appears under the shared section in your finder. If it still doesn't you can try all the other solutions listed above.

[how to create network]
On your Mac go to airport icon on the top-right screen -> choose create a network, name it anything then press OK (don't mind any other stuff). Then on your iPhone goto settings -> WiFi -> (turn it on if it's not) then select the network you created !
Open the finder on your Mac and there's your iPhone.

You can actually see it disappear if you discontinue the network and on the iphone invoke the Edge or 3G network by opening a page in iphone safari.
Of course you have to Eject your iphone drives first then Reconnect iphone.
Open the finder and it's not there !

Remember you need to be in WiFi mode!

i registered just to comment on this thread. i was looking for help too. but then i thought of turning my phone completely off and turning it back on and it appeared on my shared list. so maybe some of you should try that.

I just tried this by completely turning off the iphone and sure enough, it shows up in finder under shared. But my question remains, do I have to do this every time if I want to access the phone's file system? Turning off the phone is such a time killer.

+1 Sidebar solution

If you're still having trouble getting the phone to show up in the sidebar, try rebooting your phone, it worked for me. Also, as people have mentioned make sure that AppleTalk is enabled under System Prefs>Network>Advanced>AppleTalk Tab (that's for Leopard).

Getting iPhone to Work with Finder on Netatalk

Guys you won't see iPhone if you have just installed Netatalk through Cydia.

You need to restart iPhone and as soon it restarts it would come in Finder as Shared server.

Click on --- Connect as:

Login: root
Pass: alpine
(Lowercase)

If after restarting the iPhone it still doesnt show you iPhone in Finder restart your mac. :apple:

Its goto work..:p

2 solutions for netatalk on iPhone/iPod Touch

Jailbreaking solutions
These solutions requires a jailbroken iPod Touch (I'm running 3.1.2) or iPhone (I'm running custom firmware of 3.1.2 with baseband 4.26.08).
:::Solution #1:::
After being jailbroken, use Cydia (Rock and Icy are alternatives) and install OpenSSH. I normally just ssh using Cyberduck on mac or WinSCP on windows.
:::Solution #2:::

You should install both.

Login at least once with SSH via terminal to change the passwords for root and mobile. Then netatalk makes it really easy and eliminates the need for cyberduck or winscp.

But to install Netatalk... Just install it, reboot your phone, then check your Mac for the iPhone to show :D

Hey,

Sorry for bumping such an old thread. This works perfectly for me on Snow Leopard and iPhone OS 3.1.3. However, I have one question, I know it works over WiFi with no issues, is it possible to make it work over USB? Only way I've found it works over USB, is when I enable the tethering option on my iPhone and disable the WiFi.

Thanks

That should be the only way then. Netatalk is just AppleTalk for the iPhone or Linux. So you still have to be on the same LAN as the computer.

Ah right. Isn't there anyway of redirecting it to USB? I tried localhost@127.0.0.1 and localhost and 127.0.0.1 on their own with no luck.

One last question, is it possible to get FTP style permissions in Finder? Like octal permissions? (777 etc)

Not sure... I guess you'll be using command line. :) Or I suppose you could download Fugu or Fetch and use that.

You CAN set permissions but they are limited.

the turn off/turn back on had worked for me. snow leopard 10.6.2.

Now it's time to go back to making themes.

Hey, I've a bit different problem. I can connect to iphone via netatalk, but can't access to any folder from main path.

Yesterday it worked perfectly and I can't remember any differences from yesterday what may made this problem.

Anyone solved it without restoring or reinstalling devices? Thank you friends.
