I think most streaming services hope to have 1-3 blockbuster series.

For HBO, it was Game of Thrones. For Netflix, it was Squid Game. For Apple it's Ted Lasso.
They just need that one series to lure viewers in.

Given there's a hit on pretty much every service, it's too expensive to join them all.
Jumping from service to service is a bit too much hassle for me. I'll stick with one (Netflix) for now and just sign up with other services only whenever there's trial offer.

I’m streaming AppleTV+ content more than before, Netflix is very good but the price is a joke for 4K, i suppose i will close my account when the price increase will arrive here, usually very soon after USA changes. Life goes on.

Well this marks the fourth price increase in just 2 years.

I cancelled after the last one and refuse to go back. They are the most mismanaged company of the modern age and I refuse to help them figure it out by tolerating continuous price increases.

Stop doing things like dumping 50 million dollars on Obama content and you won't have the mystery of why you need to raise prices.

There is so much content out there and no mono-culture so I don’t feel like I’m missing out canceling. Netflix no longer buys legacy content and they cancel their best original shows without giving them a chance to conclude properly. Most months I don’t watch anything on Netflix and while they do make good stuff occasionally, it’s not close to being worth $240 a year.

Archaic streaming model, charging more for the modern high definition that is 4K! All the other players don't do this.
They would probably argue that $20 is the standard price, with those who want lower quality streams getting a lower price ;)

The reality of this type of pricing model is that Netflix are trying to extract the optimal revenue from its customer base and they do this by segmenting a very similar product into different tiers. If everyone had to pay full price, the extra revenue per user wouldn't make up for the reduction in subscriber base. Similarly, if the full product was available at a lower price (somewhere between basic and premium) then I'd bet their calculations show that money would be left on the table - because once you commit to paying $15.49 per month, the extra $4.50 isn't really that much.

Cancelled Netflix years ago when I realized I was watching a lot of really middling stuff. This is the first time I've seen their prices in a long while. It's shocking. You all are paying this?

never subscribed to Netflix, though looks more like the old cable company behavior ... but, if you have internet and then pick your subscriptions, you can still be (much) better off than in the old cable world, just chose your content wisely ...

Lets see, we have Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, HBO Max, Prime, and DirecTv oh and cant watch ads on YouTube so I have that as well. I only really care about YT, its the rest of the family every time I ask what we are not using that tell me we use them all. They all do watch a lot of TV here but dang, who needs this many. We have over the air HD locals setup too because why not. XM in 2 cars, Apple TV+, forgot that one. Why not go up $5 and just not ask again for a while we are going to get there eventually. Ha.

We've been cord-cutters for about 10 years. My wife likes a few shows on Netflix that aren't easily available elsewhere so I keep it. It's a small price to pay to bless her and the least I can do since she completely indulges my gadget hobby. ?

I'm an old dinosaur so I don't mind watching ad-supported free options like Pluto TV, Tubi, and OTA HD. Even out here in the boonies, we get 30 channels on a cheap amplified "placemat" antenna.?

The increase is bad enough on its own but even worse is it gives cover to all the other services to raise their rates as well. "Sure we raised them but we're still cheaper than Netflix"

Is Netflix the first to change this time or the last to change this time though!? ;)

No, it's not.

The last time they announced a price increase was October 2020. Before that was January 2019, and before that was October 2017.

Unless you live outside the U.S./Canada

I'm newly single again after a decade with the wrong person.

One of the things I am going through is the services we shared together.

Netflix, in particular, is one I have chosen NOT to subscribe to myself. Just too expensive for crap I either own or can get through.....other means. Perhaps I'll hope on for stranger things 4.

Now......I do control the spotify family plan.....hah hah.....
