Shots fired! Apple you’re next... remove the Netflix app from the store maybe?
If this happens then goodbye Apple

Plus yes Netflix Malaysia is indeed testing out a mobile phone subscription only. It makes sense to disable AirPlay till they sort it out.

The reaction in this thread just seems absurd- playing Airplay on a hotel TV?? I don’t know which hotel has Airplay, maybe the one you go to. Plus it’s not like you can’t open the dozen of Netflix apps available on Smart TVs, AppleTV, Chromecast, PS4 etc etc etc

Any device you want to airplay Netflix to will have an app of it’s own. Whether it be an Apple TV or an Airplay enabled HDTV. This is a non-issue. But their reasoning is weird.

It was just nice sometimes to watch something on iPad and stream the sound to my home theatre without having to fire up the projector... sad move Netflix, but obviously Apple is a competitor for them now.

Why would anyone use Airplay to watch Netflix? Not being snarky. Honestly curious. Seems weird.
I can share with you an example.

Say I am at work and have an Apple TV hooked up to a projector screen. The Apple TV wouldn’t be connected to any network, and thus none of its apps work. It’s there solely for airplay mirroring.

This is why I hated the YouTube redesign. Previously, I could stream YouTube from the app on my iPad to the Apple TV. Now, it simply launches the YouTube app on the Apple TV and attempts to stream from there, which naturally fails because my Apple TV has no internet access.

The only recourse for me is to either download the video clip first (using a shortcut) or load the video in safari.

And now you would have a similar issue with Netflix, and any app which goes down this route.

Remind me how competition is good for the customer again? /s

Netflix, the service where it never has the movie you want to watch...

That’s being said I don’t think it’s that big of a deal. Plenty of dedicated apps.

With all the crying here you'd think its the end of the world! Play it on your smart TV or Apple TV, problem solved! Prime Video doesn't allow you to cast their content using Chromecast and no one in the Android world is crying about it because you can easily cast it from the Chrome browser, Android TV or Roku.

Lots of hotels do. And the number will increase now that airplay is being included in TV sets.

Lol. Apple would survive fine without Netflix.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't AirPlay RE-compress the Video Stream ?

And if so, it reduces the quality, & should ONLY be used as a Last Resort.

I read that Netflix might test an mobile app only plan, so I wonder if this is the start of it. I think it was going to be $3.99 a month for a mobile device, so maybe they don’t want people to pay that and be able to watch it on a tv?

So you watch Netflix at work??? Yeah, people would get fired at most places.

Why would anyone use Airplay to watch Netflix? Not being snarky. Honestly curious. Seems weird.

Because Netflix client app would connect to different server for different platform/ resolution. And from time to time their cross domain authentication server will fail to maintain internal links correctly. And the result is that you’re not able to login from apps on Apple TV, while iOS apps / web client on the same local network works correctly.

This is only regional/ temporary problem so you may not experienced it. But when it happens, it would take some time for Netflix to fix it. And meanwhile AirPlay from your iOS is the easiest runaround you can do from the client side. I was doing this for several times.

When has anyone used AirPlay for Netflix? Every damn tv and streaming box has it. This is basically a giant nothing burger.
Many examples have been given in this thread. While you may not, people do use it.

If true, it explains this move. Either way its a foul play.

This would make me drop Netflix, but damn kids need entertainment.
This was useful when you would go to someone else's home and just throw what you wanted to watch up on screen. NO log off and log in to use my account.

Wonder if this has to do with the opening up of Airplay to non-Apple devices?

I’ll be canceling my Netflix subscription due to content limitations. Outside of the first few House of Cards seasons they’ve not produced any original content that compels me to keep subscribing other than licensing Marvel’s content so I can keep tabs on the MCU. Now that Disney’s streaming service is coming and with Netflix streaming fewer and fewer TV shows / movies that are any good it makes sense to cancel.

Teachers have free periods in between lessons, you know. I do stream Netflix, music or podcasts while say, marking my books.

Granted, I have never actually been in a position where I have needed to stream Netflix content to my students in class, unlike YouTube videos. I guess my point is more that one should not expect that an Apple TV is always connected to the internet.

Don’t even get me started on YouTube still not supporting PIP. These larger companies are big enough that people will still use their services even if they don’t support Apple’s latest APIs and they know it.

I make much more use of their disc service than streaming. My kid is pretty much the only one who watches Netflix now, and mostly for old Disney stuff that will doubtless be on Disney+.

This is all about preventing you from watching content not available in your country on a TV set, it might be possible to set up a VPN on an Apple TV but I bet it isn't easy.
