I just did that. I hope they will pull their heads out from the sand before it's too late. First they cancel all the Marvel Originals, now this? For me it's too much!
I didn’t know they canceled all the marvel shows. There’s no point in Netflix without those shows. I cancelled because of your comment haha.

Maybe it is time to quit paying for Netflix... first no longer subscriptions within iOS, now to Airplay. Next no longer in TV

They probably want to be able to tell the difference between a small screen play and a large screen play for statistical purposes.

Yesterday I searched for and added Netflix content from the TV app and it showed up in Up Next just fine.

Netflix knows that for many Apple TV users, access to Netflix is a primary use case for the device. Netflix may also believe that people value the subscription more than having an Apple TV. If Netflix can weaken the value of having an Apple TV and subsequently Apple TV+, they may just chance it and abandon tvOS altogether.

Killing AirPlay support may be a precursor to this larger decision. It would essentially isolate the Apple TV box from playing any Netflix content and Netflix may be willing to gamble with some membership loss if it means hobbling Apple’s larger media ambitions.

There's probably 10 different ways one might watch Netflix, and AirPlaying is far away from what I'd probably go for. Streaming down my ethernet connection directly to the app on my console, tv app, apple tv, laptop, etc would be far more advantageous than AirPlay.

I'm really not understanding the panic and anger in this thread.
I agree. In our home AirPlay is only used to show videos that people have bookmarks on their personal devices. Most of those come from Social Media apps. Airplay is great but can't understand why people use it for everything. I see suggestion where some are using it as a 2nd monitor for a computer. Holy Crap the lag on that must be intense! Even if it's to hold the toolbars for Photoshop!

Also for all the other comments on Netflix's latest changes:
- They had no choice in dropping the Marvel shows. It was part of their Disney contract when they outbid Starz for it back in 2016. Disney wants its property back and plans to do a full court press on the superhero shows and mixing them in with the TV Shows. Why they purchased Fox!

- Remove subscriptions from the iOS app just makes sense. When you're a newcomer, you do anything to get new customers (loss leaders) like sell the latest console for $100 off (Limited Quantities!). But once you're big you don't want to keep losing money. Any members that comes in via iOS has an initial cost of 30% (Using Apple's network plus their fan base) the monthly has a different rate. Still cheaper than what was previously available. (Brick and Mortar stores had hefty fees to put your titles up on their shelves and Verizon's mobile store was impossible to get onto with out going through layers of companies! Netflix no longer needs Apple's network for promotion so to save some money they just removed the subscription from the app. Same with Amazon.

You’d need an Apple TV to do so, no? You just can’t airplay to a TV with no other device attached to it.

Do you carry your AppleTV around with you on trips?

A lot of hotels I’ve been in , ex. Hilton , their TVs are too old for airplay enabled TV.
There are apple TVs in hotels now. More importantly there are apple TVs in my office. Just because there are apple TVs, though, doesn’t mean I have the ability to install apps on them.

And yes there are now many TVs - in fact most new TVs that are sold for now on - that support airplay without Apple TV.

Damned liars.

There’s a recurring theme in this thread:
Why don’t people use their tech the same exact way that I do? that’s just weird! why do they even need to do that?

Remember, everyone is different, has different priorities, different interests, and different ways of consuming tech. Just because it’s different from your mode does not make it wrong or irrelevant.

Why would anyone use Airplay to watch Netflix? Not being snarky. Honestly curious. Seems weird.

You go to a friends house who doesn’t have a Netflix subscription? A hotel with an AirPlay capable TV?

I suppose you could log into your friends app, or a hotel’s smart TV app, but that’s a little more complex than just hitting AirPlay on your own logged-in phone.

This is all about Netflix trying to put the squeeze on Apple, who it now considers a competitor. I suppose Netflix’s ultimate goal is to get Apple to allow in-app signups without revenue sharing (or at least minimizing it). Apple loses around $350M in revenue when all Netflix sign-ups happen outside the app. But Netflix also loses signups because some people don’t bother to sign up outside the app. Cost of programming also has gone up for Netflix since they have a new competitor (actually several, but Apple certainly isn’t helping things by throwing their money around). So Netflix feels threatened and is trying to use whatever leverage it has to get a better deal from Apple. “Technical reasons” is “technically we’d like more money.”

I use Chromecast anyway.

And is that still enabled? Are you able to stream from your phone to chromecast on any TV that supports it, not just the one you’ve logged into your Netflix account?

$3.99 mobile only subscriptions Airplay to TV?

There is such a thing?

If so this makes perfect sense. If you stream to an Apple TV, the bandwidth requirements for a 1080p TV, or a 4K TV are going to be much higher than that $3.99 subscription is designed to support.

First time I noticed no Airplay with Netflix App, June of 2018. Called them, after some dancing around they admitted that it will not work with Airplay. Asked if they planned on fixing, not broken a feature.

We travel and where we travel limited to poor internet and LTE. Need the ability to download shows to the iPad or whatever. They need to understand, not everyone has access to highspeed internet. Most have some access so downloading during the night, that may take several hours a good option. Then stream on Airplay. Good news Amazon allows Airplay at least for now. Cancelled Netflix.

Most popular complaint is "my apple tv has no network connection" or "I can't install apps on my apple tv" or "my apple tv doesn't have enough storage space to download videos"

Tim apple needs to innovate, needs to make a apple tv that just works.

Damned liars.

As mentioned many times in this thread, Netflix is creating a lower priced plan that works on small screens only.

Where have these “most popular complaints” been found? I haven’t seen them. I’ve seen “i can’t install apps on OTHER PEOPLE’S Apple TVs” not “on my Apple TV.” And what does storage space have to do with streaming, not downloading, videos? And who said anything about no network connection other than talking about situations where your internet may go down but you still have LTE, and why would that be Apple’s fault?

Netflix has just released a "mobile only" tier in some countries for a discounted price. I think this is one of the preventative measures for it.

How does Airplay cause a problem for this? If someone wants to watch Netflix at low mobile resolution on their TV, it doesn't make any difference on Netflix's end.

To be honest, if I go to a hotel or a friend’s house, the last thing I’m wanting to do is watch TV. I understand some people do, but I do that at home. If I’m out, I’m enjoying everything else in life.
