Netflix knows that for many Apple TV users, access to Netflix is a primary use case for the device. Netflix may also believe that people value the subscription more than having an Apple TV. If Netflix can weaken the value of having an Apple TV and subsequently Apple TV+, they may just chance it and abandon tvOS altogether.

Killing AirPlay support may be a precursor to this larger decision. It would essentially isolate the Apple TV box from playing any Netflix content and Netflix may be willing to gamble with some membership loss if it means hobbling Apple’s larger media ambitions.

This man gets it.

How does Airplay cause a problem for this? If someone wants to watch Netflix at low mobile resolution on their TV, it doesn't make any difference on Netflix's end.

Perhaps it’s not so much a technical limitation as a bug. Netflix rolled out an update that broke the app in their efforts to limit the mobile tier from streaming content to a higher bandwidth source. Perhaps the end goal is to restrict mobile tier while allowing higher tier users full access. It’s not like Apple hasn’t had similar issues and taken their time to roll out a fix, sometimes several updates later.

Where have these “most popular complaints” been found? I haven’t seen them. I’ve seen “i can’t install apps on OTHER PEOPLE’S Apple TVs” not “on my Apple TV.” And what does storage space have to do with streaming, not downloading, videos? And who said anything about no network connection other than talking about situations where your internet may go down but you still have LTE, and why would that be Apple’s fault?

If you believe Netflix is "playing dirty" to attack apple, that is the ecosystem you choose to live in. It is no secret apple is very hostile to app devs that have apps with similar functionality as apples built in apps in iOS.

Their Apple TV app is so user hostile with the auto-playing previews, the aggressive cutting in when the credits are running... I honestly avoid Netflix for the most part when I can, and only go into the app when I know what I'm looking for.

Yeah, and Apple gets a lot of criticism for their stance. Now Netflix should get the same treatment.

Does this effect audio? Will there be issues now using HomePod with ATV and watching Netflix?

To be honest, if I go to a hotel or a friend’s house, the last thing I’m wanting to do is watch TV. I understand some people do, but I do that at home. If I’m out, I’m enjoying everything else in life.
As a business traveler, I watch a lot of “tv” with my iPad. It’s not like I’m always traveling to fun places.

I don't understand why we're at the mercy of the content creator how we connect our devices.

Would it still work if you stream it from Safari instead of the app?

I don’t really use the TV app anyway as it’s mixed between rent, subscription, free and paid content which I find irritating. I’d rather it just showed me everything I’m subscribers too and what I’ve purchased on one section then another section for buy and rent. Netflix however should be careful, the less easy they make their content to access the more people are likely to cancel unless they get some really big hitting series.

i love that it's by title but I agree that there could be some tweaks to how that works. like there's no way to save a title outside of the whole 'up next'. maybe i want to remember something or get an alert when it comes out but I don't want it on my 'playlist' just yet. also the playback UI for iTunes stuff could use some work. including autoplaying the next episode like every other service does when it's a tv show. and re subscriptions. if I have Prime but a title requires I have a certain sub channel don't like like the show is available to me. show the listing for Prime greyed out with a marker that says "requires X channel subscription via Prime to watch". allow me to save which of the six profiles on my Hulu is mine so it by passes that screen. and so on

You’d need an Apple TV to do so, no? You just can’t airplay to a TV with no other device attached to it.

Do you carry your AppleTV around with you on trips?

A lot of hotels I’ve been in , ex. Hilton , their TVs are too old for airplay enabled TV.
You miss a
I agree. In our home AirPlay is only used to show videos that people have bookmarks on their personal devices. Most of those come from Social Media apps. Airplay is great but can't understand why people use it for everything. I see suggestion where some are using it as a 2nd monitor for a computer. Holy Crap the lag on that must be intense! Even if it's to hold the toolbars for Photoshop!

Also for all the other comments on Netflix's latest changes:
- They had no choice in dropping the Marvel shows. It was part of their Disney contract when they outbid Starz for it back in 2016. Disney wants its property back and plans to do a full court press on the superhero shows and mixing them in with the TV Shows. Why they purchased Fox!

- Remove subscriptions from the iOS app just makes sense. When you're a newcomer, you do anything to get new customers (loss leaders) like sell the latest console for $100 off (Limited Quantities!). But once you're big you don't want to keep losing money. Any members that comes in via iOS has an initial cost of 30% (Using Apple's network plus their fan base) the monthly has a different rate. Still cheaper than what was previously available. (Brick and Mortar stores had hefty fees to put your titles up on their shelves and Verizon's mobile store was impossible to get onto with out going through layers of companies! Netflix no longer needs Apple's network for promotion so to save some money they just removed the subscription from the app. Same with Amazon.
they actually did choose to cancel the marvel stuff. The deal they had for the marvel stuff is separate from the streaming deal for outside Disney content. In fact marvel/Disney can’t use any of the Netflix characters for 2 more years after cancellations

Almosr every video app on iOS has airplay functions not to mention Apple just made deals bringing airplay 2 to almost every tv manufacturer

I just dug up the original press release on Reddit:

“We don’t like Apple anymore, now that they’re launching a TV service, and we’re going to make it as annoying as possible for their customers to use Netflix. Going forward, we hope they continue to believe our lies about the reason we are crippling their experience.”

I'm using netflix less and less. Once Disney+ comes out (and hopefully includes fox content), i'll drop it.

Same here. And if you have kids, it makes even more sense. Looks like Disney is gonna come in to the game with a thunder. Just hope it doesn't have crazy tiers and hyper premium rates

What a lame excuse. All the major TV manufacturers are adding AirPlay 2 as we speak. Vizio is adding it to every TV since 2015 via a firmware update. Tech limitations my behind.

The reaction in this thread just seems absurd- playing Airplay on a hotel TV?? I don’t know which hotel has Airplay, maybe the one you go to. Plus it’s not like you can’t open the dozen of Netflix apps available on Smart TVs, AppleTV, Chromecast, PS4 etc etc etc

Multiple after I've been there, purchased an Apple TV for my stay, and then left it there when I was done (purposely, I didn't want to pack them).

Aside from the handful of times I did that there are some hotels that have Apple TV of their own accord too. It's not common but it is out there. I seem to remember one of the chains (not one of the major brands) deciding to add them universally too.

Having Netflix available on Hotel TVs is also very common now but they require your own credential and there's no way I'm entering my username and password on a hotel device.

It’s hard to imagine why a content creator/distributor would go out of its way to make it harder for customers to view its content, even if it isn’t the most common use case. They had to go out of their way to disable airplay when the user mirrors the device from the control center, so it’s clearly intentional.

Netflix has just released a "mobile only" tier in some countries for a discounted price. I think this is one of the preventative measures for it.

So “technical limitations” refers to the inability of Netflix’s coders to figure out how to prevent a subset of users from circumventing their artificial “mobile only” restriction?

I suspect you are right.

This is stupid but I still love Netflix. I will be sad when they lose Pixar and Marvel movies but they are still amazing for our family with content for all ages.

By “certify” they probably mean HDCP. A worthless protocol that is easily defeated but that the content providers probably required in the contracts they signed with Netflix because the content owners are idiots.

A few other use cases I can think of (not sure if they’ve been mentioned).

High end projectors are often nothing more than monitors (no built-in Apps so no Netflix, Hulu or anything). AV receivers can also accept AirPlay.
