I have to say that since buying a 'Smart TV' Apple TV has become pretty irrelevant. I only use it now for my iTunes purchases. TBH if you live outside the USA then ATV is a pretty poor offering in any event. The app for Netflix on my TV is much better than ATV anyhow.

Watching farscape today, and I got a countdown timer. It appears right when the credits start, and will automatically play the next episode without user interaction.

It does play the next episode without user interaction... in fact, it seems to play the next episode too early for me so I can't watch the last few seconds of anything now.

Yeah, I am not sure why we didn't get this option earlier today when we tested it, but I can confirm that episodes will get the countdown timer and play automatically. Looks like this only happens after you've selected "Play Next Episode" with the remote for the first time. I've updated the post.

Really? I haven't come across a "Smart TV" that has an interface worth a crap. And for some reason Hulu+ never works well on any that I've tried (Panasonics) - it's always choppy as hell and eventually freezes.

I've tried Netflix on a few Smart TVs... the interface is always awful and completely laggy. Way inferior to Apple TV.

Netflix for Apple TV Gains 'Up Next' Feature for Automatic Episode Playback

Up next works like crap too. Keeps popping up and then switching waaaay before an episode is over and you have to hit menu to stop it. I hate it.

love it as i only use netflix to bing watch shows now if only you could disable the opening credits too. its so annoying fast forwardings the 2 minutes credits on every ep of House of Cards for example

This feature was a godsend when renovating the house with only an ipad in a room. Back to back always sunny in philadelphia episodes non stop yes please

The other day on my iPad I figured out you can swipe down to cancel the "play next episode"... and play the rest of the episode credits. (not sure if it works the same way on an iPhone)

I hate this feature so much on iPad. Is there a way to turn it off on aTV? Thankfully I don't have it on my older Roku although if they ever update to add profiles I fear they'll likely add that too.

I know the article says that it doesn't automatically play the next episode, but from trying it out this evening it sure seems like it does. Not sure if it's an annoying feature or it has some bugs that need to be ironed out.

Some people just do not know how to use new features like this one.

Thank you based god!!!!

I've found that starting in 2014, a lot of manufacturers' Smart TVs are starting to speed up. I suspect that the major ones, like Samsung, LG, etc. were including crappy CPUs in their sets previously.

However, I just purchased a 2014 LG TV and the interface really is zippy, including with Netflix and all the other apps. It's actually been pretty nice to use and I've started using the build-in Netflix app instead of my Apple TV since it requires fewer button pushes on the remote. :)

I too think the PS3 user interface is superior. I use it over Apple TV.

BTW, if you want to keep watching the credits, you can.

I don't want to sound harsh but IT SUCKS. This new "feature" SUCKS. It goes perfectly with their new logo.

Example: I'm watching Hemlock Grove, the episode has six minutes left. SIX MINUTES! Not just six minutes of credits but six minutes of the story. And suddenly "up next" appears and moves on to the next episode. WTF?

So after my confusion, I now I have reach for the apple remote and click back over to the show "box" and then click on the show to resume full screen before the countdown to the next episode.

Amazing work netflix, just like the twitter app, you keep striving for excellence. And by excellence, I mean ****** UI

Its not that it sucks it's that it's not working correctly for you for some reason.

Agree and disagree - I think they do need to iron out some bugs. Been watching some adventure time and will autoplay next episode with more than a minute left of an 11 minute episode. That said, you can click back to the main viewer and it seems to play out the whole thing before then moving on automatically.

Once it's been refined a bit, it'll be more or less the same as on other devices. I for one have been waiting for this feature to be added to the Netflix app since the day I bought my aTV (especially considering other apps had this functionality e.g. Red Bull TV).

I was watching Orange is the New Black and it switched to a new episode when there was still 10 minutes left in the episode that I had been watching. I had to go back to my menu, restart the show I had been watching and when it started playing the show window went to 1/3 size. They badly need to refine this feature and make sure it doesn't try to start a new show before the credits roll on the old show.

Yeah, this is great in concept, but I'm also having problems with it, they botched the execution. Most times it comes up way too early, before credits roll, but even that isn't consistent (even with the same length of credits). And a few times it has just jumped to the next episode while still playing, without me even pressing a button.

you obviously don't own an apple device. Phone, tablet, computer or you would use airplay everyday. Or you don't own surround sound and don't care much for airplay...
This feature alone is worth it for an Apple TV. Ive never used the smart features on my panasonic plasma. Too slow and i have surround sound id have to run another cable to get sound out from the tv's app. I disable the tv's speakers obviously.

I never knew that apps on Apple TV can update by themselves. Is this similar to the auto update system of iOS for iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch?
