It does play the next episode without user interaction... in fact, it seems to play the next episode too early for me so I can't watch the last few seconds of anything now.

This is by design, depending on the show it cuts off the "previously on..." bit.

I have to say that since buying a 'Smart TV' Apple TV has become pretty irrelevant. I only use it now for my iTunes purchases. TBH if you live outside the USA then ATV is a pretty poor offering in any event. The app for Netflix on my TV is much better than ATV anyhow.

what TV are you using? I have never come across any TV's, Bluray players etc that had a good Netflix app. ATV, Roku, Chromcast have way better performance that ones you find on TVs/bluray players

it switched to the next episode automatically for me. But only after all the credits was finished in full screen.

I just noticed this yesterday while watching "Boss", but implementation leaves a bit to be desired.

Ideally, it should start the new episode prior to end credits, and start next episode after intro theme/credits.

In some cases there could be something during/after the end credits, and more common, depending on the show, that there's some stuff before the opening credits.

did they take it out again? i was watching House of Cards last night and it auto played the next episode but today its back to having me pick the next episode manually from the menu.

Does this work on ATV2?
depending on which device I'm using I either get an error saying it cannot download the update or that there is no update.

Really? I haven't come across a "Smart TV" that has an interface worth a crap. And for some reason Hulu+ never works well on any that I've tried (Panasonics) - it's always choppy as hell and eventually freezes.

As said in previous posts the offering for ATV in Europe is a world removed from USA. Netflix too is a poor relation to the USA or Canada offerings. Hulu+ what the hell is that? I think if you saw what we are offered with ATV to what our American cousins get you would be genuinely shocked.

you obviously don't own an apple device. Phone, tablet, computer or you would use airplay everyday. Or you don't own surround sound and don't care much for airplay...
This feature alone is worth it for an Apple TV. Ive never used the smart features on my panasonic plasma. Too slow and i have surround sound id have to run another cable to get sound out from the tv's app. I disable the tv's speakers obviously.

rarely use airplay

I don't own an iPhone as I don't like the 4" screen. I do however own an iPad and an iMac. I also own a Sonos soundbar which I find to be brilliant. I got rid of my 5.1 system after I tried the Sonos.

No let me tell you how I use things - I have Netflix on my smart TV. As soon as I finish watching something via the Netflix app the next episode in the series is cued ready for me to watch. I have a browser on my smart TV though don't use it much. What I do like is the TV can act as server or client so my Synology NAS comes in handy there. One of my favourite features is the ability to plug in a thumb drive. I can load up a complete season of my current favourite programme in HD and leave the thumb drive permanently plugged into the rear of the TV. That way I can watch the programmes with just one click of the remote control. No Airplay to bother about no wireless issues.

Now apart from playing my iTunes media you tell me how ATV would be any better?

You have to use what works for you and sadly Apple have shown little interest in developing ATV outside the North American market. As a result products such as Smart TV's, Roku etc. etc. are cleaning up.

YES.

I don't care about automatically playing it but I do mind the extra clicks to go back to the main list of episodes every single time. People have been requesting it for years.

I'm actually glad it doesn't automatically play the next episode for you, personally.

Dude, this has been a feature on just about every 10ft UI for the past 5 years or so, except for Apple TV.

It simply means that when I finish Episode 1, it automatically queues Episode 2, so I don't have to drill out through the menus and then back in.

It works well and I cannot imagine why anyone would not want it, unless you never watch more than one episode at a sitting, or you just enjoy going up and down through menus.

I am glad Apple TV finally moved into the 21st century, at least as far as the Netflix app goes.

Grrrh i hate this feature on the Roku
now its here to annoy me on the Apple tv as well

Hated it on my Tivo Roamio, until I unchecked the auto play option in my account settings. No more auto play on all of my devices. :)

Last night I went to my account settings on the Netflix website to turn off the "automatically play next episode" option, hoping that it would apply to AppleTV playback as well.

Now I've watched another episode on Netflix and I assumed it worked. I came to this thread to let people know that this is a valid option, only to see the feature might have been disabled for everyone. (ha!)

Part of the reason I turned it off yesterday is because I really don't like the video shrinking down during the credits and having a timer to count down before I can reach for the remote and stop it.
It might sound like a vapid complaint, but it really is just needlessly stressful if I don't have the option to turn this feature off.

But, most importantly -- Last night while watching the second episode of Hemlock Grove, that "countdown to next episode" started up when there was still about 4minutes left in the episode.
I'm sure I wasn't the only person who experienced something like that, and it could be why the feature (might have been?) removed for the moment.

Okay my Apple TV is the latest version and I do not see this feature working for Netflix are they sure this update happened already?

Netflix is currently dead on my AppleTV. You click on it and it loads a while but then goes back to the main screen. Previously it was working as intended with the up next feature, but now nothing works :(

but why not load all your "thumb drive" movies onto your iTunes and airplay everything? i don't put in movies anymore after i transferred my whole dvd/blu ray collection to a hard drive that is plugged into my router. I can airplay all my movies and music from my phone/ipad/mac to my speakers wirelessly. I also use a sleeping app on my phone or iPad to play rain or waves sounds from the app to my surround sound through airplay. I don't understand why more people don't take advantage of this. Its the main selling point of an Apple TV to me honestly.
Can you do this with your "smart tv" ... no

Am I the only person who owns an appleTV that didn't get this update? I had auto play for one night and it disappeared. Anyone else having this issue?
