None of the paid options should have ads. That's part of the point of paying; to avoid ads.

Why not? Why shouldn't subscribers have the option to go with a cheaper ad-supported plan if they want to? A pay/ad hybrid model has been the norm for content delivery for ages including television, newspapers, magazines, etc. At least here you have a CHOICE to go with or without ads. If someone doesn't want ads, they can choose a plan that doesn't have ads.

YouTube has a free/paid model and they generated more revenue than Netflix. I wonder if Netflix would generate more revenue if they let people watch for free with ads

Is stealing from a thief really morally wrong? Copyright law used to be ten years corporate lobbyists have pushed it up over a hundred.
What’s the difference between a snail and a slug?

I thought Ad Tier would be rubbish on Prime Video. It’s a single 30 second ad at the start of an episode. No different to the "Watch next" stuff at the start of every other streaming service, except I can’t click to remove.

Unlike YouTube that has increased sized ads throughout the video.

There is no “value” in pirating. It makes you a common thief, no different than the guy who breaks into your car and steals your radio. I fail to see where theft can be justified under any circumstances.
That’s a terrible analogy (and it’s always been) in terms of discussing piracy. It’s flat-out wrong. Theft deprives one party of their property. In this instance there is no theft because property wasn’t stolen. It CAN be accurately called unauthorized copying however. But saying it’s theft is pearl-clutching and name calling.

what’s taking place is a gross misunderstanding, let’s call it failing to read the room. Apple wisely saw that convenience trumps free, which is why the iTunes Store was a hit. People want to do the right thing- but with minimum hassle. Netflix et all had a golden opportunity and arrangement for years and squandered it by slowly eroding that good faith and convenience. I welcome the piracy because it will -eventually- lead to disastrous quarterly reports and a swing of the pendulum back the other direction where it arguably belongs.

But I don’t have a dog in this fight. Just an observation.

cable was ad free when it started in Australia. it has ads.
you're paying for access to content, not lack of ads, at least on low level plans.

Netflix wouldnt be growing if Free To Air tv had anything decent to get viewers.

Blame "reality tv" for destroying networks. Chanel 10 in Australia lived and breathed reality tv.
It was popular until we all had enough of the crap manipulated "drama".
The shows on other stations are being cancelled or cut short.
As a format, it's largely had it's day.

When old people I worked with start complaining "there's nothing on tv anymore" you know there is a problem.

YouTube ads are getting longer and worse.
All in an effort to annoy you to pay up.
The content is not worth paying the same a proper streaming service to get access to.
The dentist plays ad free relaxing videos on the ceiling tv. He can afford it and makes sense.
Everyone else watching the occasional short would be hard to justify it especially given world economy at the moment.

funny enough, people moan and caterwaul about streaming this and that, but I haven’t regularly watched any media in several decades and now I regarded it as a vice- like drugs, gambling, alcohol. I truly feel bad for folks that are addicted and who spend a disproportionate amount of their spare time being passively programmed instead of living content, balanced and healthy lives

That's like saying people are ok with 8gb of RAM on MacBooks....

...as if they they really had much of a choice without paying through the nose.
They could also just not get Netflix at all. Just like how people can choose not to buy a Mac.

Exactly. In order for you to be able to stream videos, thousands of people from many industries had to work to make it happen.

There is always to option to use a DVR and record or "buffer" 10 or 15 minute of content and then watch with a 10 or 15 minute delay. This allows you to "fast forward" the ads or to use software that tries to do this for you. Plex should be able to handle this. if not there are other good options.

That said, most people would never be able to set up and run a system like that and don't mind ads.

Netflix has gained more than 8 million global paid subscribers since April, according to new subscriber information included in the company's second quarter earnings results [PDF]. With the jump in paid subscriptions, Netflix now has a total of 277.65 million paid subscribers around the world, marking 16.5 percent year-over-year growth.

Ad tier memberships increased 34 percent quarter-over-quarter, thanks to Netflix pushing its ad-supported tier. Netflix eliminated its cheapest ad-free "Basic" subscription tier last year, and earlier in July, the company began warning customers in the UK and Canada that they would need to move to a new plan.

In the United States, the Basic plan was priced at $9.99 per month, but the cheapest ad-free Netflix plan is now priced at $15.49 a month. Netflix had been allowing customers that were already on the Basic plan to continue using it, but that is being phased out. Ad tier memberships grew 34 percent from the first quarter to the second quarter of 2024.

Netflix with ads is priced at $6.99 per month, and it includes between four and five minutes of ads per hour. Ads vary in length from 15 to 30 seconds and play before and during TV shows and movies. The company says that it will soon test an in-house ad tech platform in Canada, with plans to launch it broadly in 2025.

Netflix saw 17 percent growth in revenue year-over-year, and it is expecting overall 2024 growth to be at 14 to 15 percent. Netflix is expecting ad memberships to increase in 2025 and beyond, with ad revenue becoming a more meaningful contributor to its business.
