Netflix today announced the upcoming launch of a new Netflix TV experience that will be available in the Netflix app for the Apple TV. Netflix has been testing a redesigned version of its TV app since last year, and the new look is a notable departure from the current design.

There is a new home page that has a streamlined, modern design, and Netflix designed it to put content front and center. Shows are organized into different categories as they are now, but each section will feature a large main card that has information like release date and show or movie description. Navigating through each show will display the same information for other content in the section, without the need to click in to a show to get more details.

There's a top bar for navigation instead of the current side bar, with dedicated sections for the home page, shows, movies, games, and your saved list, along with a search interface. The top bar is much easier to see and navigate to, which makes the different options more accessible.

The new design hinges on recommendations, which have been improved. You'll see more relevant, personalized content suggestions based on your past viewing history. Netflix says that recommendations will be more responsive to each user's "moods and interests in the moment."

Netflix plans to debut the new TV experience in the coming weeks and months.

On iOS devices, Netflix is experimenting with a generative AI search feature that will let Netflix users search for shows and movies using conversational language like "I want to watch something funny and upbeat." The feature will be available as a small, opt-in beta.

Netflix is also testing a TikTok-like vertical feed filled with clips of Netflix shows and movies, which Netflix says will "make discovery easy and fun." The new mobile experiences will be available in the coming weeks.

"Netflix plans to debut the new TV experience in the coming weeks and months."

Is it classed as a debut if it takes weeks and months to roll out?

This reminds me of the big Hulu redesign back in 2017, I believe. I was not a fan, as the interface was very cumbersome and hard to navigate, at least on a TV.

Don't mind the changes. Expecting to see it on the smart tv app too. As for the AI search for iOS, not sure whether it will be useful.

Whereas “the content” was hidden previously?
No, they mean "content we want to promote will be more intrusive in your browsing". Also "streamlined interface" means "removing on screen controls for some functions",

Be worried, folks. This is essentially the same thing Plex said about their new interface design, and anyone running that "New Experience" client knows how that has turned out.

Still no Apple TV app integration?
Not that Apple’s interface is that great, but I like it when everything is in one place.

So as a consequence I never had a Netflix subscription.
This is a key point.

Netflix' almost childish refusal to integrate with up next - the ONLY holdout app on the entire platform, is both unnecessary and detrimental to their customers who choose to use the Apple platform.

Integrating would surely INCREASE visibility and discoverability of their content on the platform and drive more traffic to their app.

Why they are the only holdout I just don't understand.

We know how 'easy' it is for them to integrate as they did 'by accident' a couple of months ago.

Perhaps the change in App Store rules regarding subscriptions in-app will soften the animosity and allow Netflix to integrate properly.

For me, Netflix' holdout is a significant disruption on my Apple TV experience.

I get Netflix (with ads) for free through T-Mobile. But I wouldn’t pay a dime of my own money for it. 90% of the content is Hallmark Channel quality or less. My wife watches it occasionally. I can’t be bothered. A new AI search and “improved recommendations” aren’t going to help if most of what is being offered is, frankly, junk.
Same. We subscribe to a few streaming services but rarely look at what Netflix has to offer. Their "for you" algorithm rarely hits for us. If, like you, ours wasn't free from T-Mobile we would have canceled it years ago.

Watched the video and got "this could have just been an email vibe".

The My Netflix section is a great idea if the continue watching section is front and centre when you land on that section. If it's not, then I'm out.

I spend so much time hunting for the Continue Watching section I could cry. haha.

My basic, one user, low resolution Netflix subscription went from $12 to $19/month in the last 6 months. I like their content, but not at a 60% price increase - time for me to cancel.

Yes, continue watching should be front center. The rest should be searchable with good tags (and AI may help for that part - if it does not replace the tags set by humans with actual brains).

Perhaps Netflix should focus on having better content than just a better UI. Where are the 70s/80s/90s cult classics? Why continue churning out woke/Squid Game-like or other forced domestic crap?
Even the free Tubi TV has better stuff these days.

I hate AppleTV+ UI and this looks like its a copy so I will probably hate that too.

It amazes me how un-user friendly these UIs are.
and I am on the opposite end. I like the TV app UI. I have hated the Netflix approach for years where I have to flick my eyes up and down and then flip left or right so the trailer doesn't just pop up and I can read the synopsis.

the Disney UI is easy too with the ability to see several rows of content at once (mostly because I am more knowledgeable of the Disney titles), whereas Netflix and Prime often show titles that are obscure and I need to read info about these.

"I need AI search assistant to tell me which sh!tty Netflix show to watch" - said no one ever.

It's funny how after insisting that third party streamers use the tvOS top navigation and Netflix ignoring them and going side menu, along with Amazon Prime and Disney+, Apple finally moved to the side menu themselves, only for Netflix to move to the top. Somebody is playing head games 😅

The article mentions the "TV" experience but not one mention of tvOS in that article.

We didn't get the updates that all the other devices got over the last couple of years so just one to watch out for.
