Netflix currently has the most subscribers it's ever had and it's priced the highest it's ever been. Companies don't think "how do we make this cheaper for our customers?" they think only about "how do we extract as much value as possible from our customers?" as that is literally the sole objective of a public company as per US law. The only time you'll ever see a price reduction from a company is if their profit margin is under attack.
They're never going to make it cheaper for their customers. That would defeat the purpose of their business. But companies hike prices based on a lot of factors - and existing revenue is one of the biggest ones. The point of my post was that all these people complaining about the price being high need to realize that by stealing their service means Netflix is forced to recoup costs of their hosting and bandwidth infrastructure somehow. Prices are higher because of it. It's an industry-wide problem that I think all the major streaming services will begin cracking down on. Disney+ has already been experimenting with ways to lock down their accounts as well.

I wonder how this will affect their viewership. I don’t know how many people share their password but if it’s substantial, it might not play out to their advantage. Some may purchase their own subscription and others won’t. It’ll be interesting to see.

One way for Netflix to discourage this sharing is to simply make all tiers HD/4K capable. For example, I don't need 4 screens at the same time, but I don't want to be stuck in SD resolution either. Currently I have no choice but to pay at least for the 4 screen tier to get 4k.

If Netflix would simply allow the lowest tier to get 4K content (but limited to 1 screen), I'm sure there will be less people sharing.
That's exactly what I want. My household consists of me and a cat! I only want one 4K screen. Netflix currently has a very poor range of subscription options and I'm sure it can't be difficult for them to extend these options to cover different size households.

Good. Bring on the downvotes but like people who stole Adobe Photoshop back in the day leading to photoshop costing $700 for a license or whatever it was before Creative Suite subscriptions came along, we paid for people who were freeloading. If Netflix can get every household to pay their fare share, maybe these price hikes will stop being a yearly festivity.

...and if you don't like it, literally every show on Netflix is available on BitTorrent.
Netflix charges higher prices for account levels with multiple streams, their pricing is already functionally based on people using it this way.

Also it’s fairly well known that Adobe dealt with piracy with a wink and a nod for years because they knew folks who used their products as teenagers and college students without a license got used to Photoshop and co and would want to use it at their jobs, where the company would pay for the license, instead of a different product. They only really jacked up their prices once most of their competition went the way of the Dodo.

if the number of users watching is what is paid for in the sub then I don't see why Netflix could have an issue with it - why does it matter to them if I am watching it whilst away with work at the same time as my kids watch it at home if I have paid for 4 simultaneous streams? Their bandwidth is the same, the amount they have to pay for the content licences is the same.

People complaining about the high price apparently don't realize that Netflix might be a lot cheaper if all its users were actually paying customers.

Edit: Not saying prices will go down. I'm saying they might not have gotten so high so quickly.
Yeah, currently it's more worthwhile if you're going to be sharing the password a lot, which means it's less worthwhile if you're not sharing it.

The issue is if you give the password to your neighbor, cousin, etc. And why, because it's not just about the cost of operation to Netflix, it's the loss of a sale.

Netflix needs to put prices up (fairly significantly) to stay in business, not lower them. They need an average monthly revenue per user of more like $30 - 40 dollars, and will get there eventually.

Netflix's pricing historically was a huge loss leader (funded by enormous debt). The service always cost much more to provide than the cash it generated.

We just had the first quarter in Netflix's history that it didn't have to borrow hundreds of millions.
Netflix needs to stop making **** movies/series just to flex ''their numerous content'' and invest to content with more quality...No need to inform you that way too many people outside US have access to far less series/movies than us users...

Yeah... I don’t see how that warning message is going to stop anyone. Unless you share your password with random strangers, whoever is trying to watch is obviously going to ask the account holder for the verification code.
Well, this is what happens. I'm currently using my girlfriend's step-sister's ex-boyfriend's Netflix creds. Not an exaggeration. In college, Netflix creds were everywhere, just have to know a friend of a friend.

I only continue to pay for Netflix because of the people with the password. They need to be lowering their prices.
When has any entertainment content service or cable service lowered prices? Content is getting more expensive. I listened to a presentation that said the $15/hour minimum wage would cause Netflix and others to raise prices a couple of dollars as the productions get more expensive because of labor rate. It is every paid person including janitors caterers, messengers, interns etc.

I’m only still paying Netflix because I know a family member who is deployed right now still uses the account. I’ll definitely cancel if they end up blocking his access.

Inflation-adjusted price can still go down. Fed used to double the money supply every 10 years, now it's every 5, so you can't really treat $ as a constant measure of value.

Also, cable TV used to cost $50 to $100 a month in 2006, now you can get roughly the same service but without ads from streaming sites for less $, so a lot less money in reality. But that was after a big market disruption.
