Why should Disney’s older content be public domain? Why shouldn’t they be allowed to profit from it?

I don’t know. Maybe. I’m mostly just annoyed at Netflix and lashing out.

Me neither.

I’m sure a decent number come from Android devices too, though a high percentage of Android phones are low end smartphones so I’m guessing it’s not double those that come from iOS.

As far as smart TV’s and DVD players, I’m guessing that the number is close to zero. These devices typically have pretty clunky user interfaces, and they also don’t typically have an easy way to make payments built into them the way that the App Store does, so it’s likely that people would have to sign up directly with Netflix via the Internet first .

Because that’s how Public Domain worked before Disney screwed it up. If the laws weren’t like that back in the day, Disney wouldn’t have made so many movies that are now considered classics. Why do you think they went with the things they did?

And don’t forget, when it first appeared on iOS you still had to sign up through the website. In app subscription wasn’t available until 2015.

Thank you! I was wondering when it became available.

Some of these comments make it sound like App Store billing was there from the beginning.

In truth it's only been available for a small part of Netflix's history.

It was never a requirement to subscribe to Netflix through Apple. It was just an option. And it's now an option that Netflix has decided to no longer support.

You gotta wonder how many of Netflix's 137 million accounts used iTunes billing anyway.

I'm sure a lot of people here did it for convenience... but this is an Apple forum. :p

You're right... there are a lot of people using Roku and other devices to watch Netflix on their TV. They aren't paying for Netflix through Apple.

In the old days you had to go to the website to subscribe to Netflix. And now it's back to the way it used to be. I don't think much will change.

I think Apple may have already made enough money out of Netflix.
I agree that Apple has made a lot of money & a percentage rate should get more & more reduced over time, but they’ still got their app on the Apple servers & who pays for that upkeep? As for Netflix saving all that money, what’s a betting that they’ll still raise them monthly fees a couple of times this year.

In the article it explains that those existing customers who are paying through the App Store in-app purchase will continue to do so. All new subscriptions must be paid through the Netflix site. So, Apple will still be making money from Netflix. And I'm not sure how much it costs an App developer to have their Apps in the App Store. Maybe there is a cost for it being hosted, I have no idea.

Because a robust app platform is good for every developer or company that provides an app. Especially considering the Netflix app is also free and was available even if you didn’t pay through iTunes.
Why doesn’t Apple just have a policy of no free apps? Every app has to cost at least 99 cents. And let Apple take a cut of that.

Heh, at least you’re honest. IMO Uber and Lyft owe their existence to iOS/mobile platforms more than Netflix does. I suppose the argument is you play Netflix content on Apple hardware so that’s why Apple deserves a cut of Netflix’s revenue stream. But there are lots of other ways to view Netflix content (I view it using my smart TV which has Roku integration). Without the phone in your pocket Uber and Lyft wouldn’t exist.

I meant payment login data, PayPal for example, or some credit card authorisation procedure (Secure Code, verified by VISA, etc.). This are all superfluous when using iTunes credit.

Not entirely true.
I have a couple of cards that require verification codes when added to pay type accounts like iTunes, Netflix, etc...
So you still are adding it but up front.

Why should Disney’s older content be public domain? Why shouldn’t they be allowed to profit from it?

Because copyright was intended to give individuals sufficient time to profit (28 years) before it became shared ownership by the community. That would mean movies like The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast should be available for anyone to use as they wish.

Instead Disney has lobbied to have that time extended, lobbying over and over to reduce their losses. Now we are looking at over 120 years before the public gets access.

Disney has every right to profit from their novel ideas (just like anyone) but that isn’t granted in perpetuality. The longer it takes for works to enter public domain the less cultural value it provides. Netflix, by curating the content and making the expirences easier to navigate could give people reason to pay for content that could otherwise be downloaded free.

Copyright is the only part of the Constitution that explicitly explains why Congress was granted the right to regulate it. The Constitution, as you likely know, granted Congress the power declare war, make money, and raise an Army and Navy. But it never explains why they have that right. In detailing copyright however it clearly stated that the intent was to promote science and arts through limited exclusive rights. Individuals profit during private ownership, but development of science and art requires the public have free access to use prior knowledge. The balance was made such that a person were originally granted maximum protection for 14 years, plus 14 more if requested.

And for what it’s worth, copyright provided protection against those who sought to use copyrighted works for financial gain. There was no punishment for those who used it for personal use - at least that’s how it was until 1997.

Yeah that’s perfectly fine, I have my PayPal connected to apple. Others prefer visa, others MasterCard. All this is offered by apple/iTunes. Why would any consumer want to have this option removed? Or as you’d say: has the world gone that crazy?
Why do you care at all about “greedy apple”?
Why are they greedy? Don’t you understand how capitalism works? Yeah I am against it too, but apple taking a share from companies they offer a platform for is NOT part of the problem.
To be honest it seems you are kind of jealous although the thought is weird since apple is not a person.
And by the way you totally do it get what people mean when they say “apple’s devices”.
Plus yes, you do are far more associated with apple than with Foxconn when you buy an iPhone. You are really confused, boy...relax.

Not Netflix but apple as he wrote..

Nobody wants that. Well, except for Apple. Since they value their customers so highly they could easily lower the fee to, say, 5% or even make it free (not a stretch considering iDevice prices which are supposedly so high because of the superior ecosystem). In this case, I am sure Netflix would be happy to keep IAP.

Netflix has reached the stage where the cost to allow IAP is greater than the monetary / growth return.
As Apple has a history of non-negotiation in this avenue the decision seems fairy straight forward.

Why would Apple lower the fee? There has been a lot of rah-rah for Netflix. Can the same people that are happy that Netflix is optimizing it’s revenue be happy for apple when apple is optimizing it’s revenue?

Why do customers purchasing IAP, even care about this fee? Most people do not, I would expect.

You missed the fact that those who like IAP won't be able to use it anymore. I do not think people should really care who gets their money. However since everyone agrees that 30% fee in this case is a robbery the only way Apple customers can get IAP back is lowering the fee. The difference between those arguing that the fee is way high and those who say Apple deserves it is that the former ones are not arguing out of love for Netflix. They do it out of common sense. While the latter one are arguing out of [perverse] love for Apple (a company!)

Already commented on that in a prior post.

Who is everyone that is agreeing that 30% is highway robbery? I don’t agree and I don’t care what apple charges.

Who is arguing the fee is unfair seems to be people who do not like the way Apple is being run. It’s amusing that people think Netflix should optimize their revenue but Apple shouldn’t. The “ Do as I say not as I do” crowd.

At any rate the people who lose IAP are the ones left out in the cold.

Not all methods for "optimizing the revenues" are equally appreciated (or even legal). Nobody is against the goal (revenue optimization) here but many find Apple methods reprehensible. Do you really believe that the 30x70 split here is fair? Lets remember that Netflix pays for content, develops the apps and does the actual streaming whereas Apple collects money and serves app downloads (once per year for a given user?). I'd say 5% for Apple would still be too much.

No, but I think people would get upset if Apple increased it. Sorry, but your comment comes across as arrogant. Netflix is taking advantage of a platform Apple developed for apps. They should pay 30%. Netflix always has the option to raise their prices. In fact, a small global price increase would more than cover Apples deserves cut - Netflix can write it off as a way to remain competitive in the market. It’s the same crap I hear from people who think colleges are to expensive. If you make a buck more over your life by going to college than the investment paid off.

If apple or any other companies are doing things illegally try have to answer to the various overseers. In that view people who are believe companies act in a manner inconsistent with their own ethos should vote with their dollars.

And many have no problems with it as well.

Yes I do considering my own belief that Apple provides a distribution and management platform for the developer.

Let’s remember apple provides a distraction and management platform. You don’t personally like the split, (not that it affects you in any way shape or form) vote with your dollars.

Instead of just solely blaming Apple, why don’t you all go after all the users who are opting to pay via iTunes than subscribe to Netflix directly? It’s their choice as well; Apple isn’t exactly pointing a gun at them.

I am right here. Come at me, bro.

For myself, it’s simple. I want Apple to take my money, and so I pay via iTunes (in addition to all the benefits I stated previously). I want the App Store to continue to be the nexus where all developers revolve around. More importantly, I want the App Store to continue to have as much leverage as it does, so developers toe the line. That’s what results in the maximum benefit for me as a consumer.

I have seen what happened with fortnite on the google play store, and I have no desire to see history repeat itself on ios.

And a happy new year to everyone here.

Netflix does not needApple whatsoever. Most people watch Netfflix using something else. Apple can take their platform and stick it up their *** as far as Netflix is concerned.

You can always send any amount of money directly to Apple. Sane customers prefer to pay less not more andunreasonable fees always increase the price.
[doublepost=1546304040][/doublepost]Is not it funny to see the same people who always complain about bogus fees in Comcast and AT&T bills be so happy to see a 30% Apple fee in Netflix bill. There is something unhealthy about it.

Edit: bad math on my part. It's actually 43% Apple fee.

Without 3rd party developers, iOS would be a nice GUI, like the first iPhone was, and little else.

Apple / developer relationship is a mutual benefit. Apple developed the infrastructure for its own benefit - in order to attract 3rd party developers which attracted more consumers to buy Apple’s iOS products.

No 3rd party developer should be forced to offer IAP. They’ve paid their developer fee. The end.

I pay directly to Netflix - I’d rather all that fee go to Netflix rather than a cut going to Apple to act as a payment middle-man on a monthly basis.

Netflix is taking advantage of a platform Apple developed for apps. They should pay 30%.

You act like that’s not something. No AppStore and android looks like a RAZR.

???

iOS without 3rd party developers is nothing.

With 3rd party developers ( like any smartphone OS ) is a different story - the platform is greatly enriched.
