I'm completely baffled by the Netflix app.

Loss of functionality (cannot browse - either use what it suggests or search for something you already know the name of) and a huge waste of screen real space.

Using Siri to say things like "new documentaries on netflix" (for example) lets you mimic some of that functionality but it shouldn't be necessary, and I am sure you cannot view as many results as plain browsing.

I feel like we just took 3 steps back. I use Netflix quite often, I'm tempted to go back to my previous AppleTV.

If it's anything like the PS4 interface, which it looks like from those pictures posted, you get to the categories and search features by pressing up passed the "Continue Watching" row. You also get straight to it by pressing the back button. Unless it's just completely removed.

Also seems to prefer streaming instantly at lowest quality instead of buffering a few seconds to HD then playing uninterrupted. Huge step backward there.
from what i've seen the aTV was the only player that seemed to do this.
both my Roku (older model) and directly on my TV start low and then jump quality in a few seconds.

I too prefer it starting in high def also, even if i have to wait for the video to start.

I tried that. Swiping up from the top row only has search and switch profile. No categories.

Okay so I bugged the nice folks at Netflix about this. The categories are there, you just have to keep scrolling down and eventually you'll get to them..... then you just have to scroll right... and keep scrolling right until you find something you want to watch.

It's an awful interface, specially when you consider that at least the top 50% of the screen is comprised of nice looking but rather useless screenshots.

Interesting topic. I would hope it would be configured as a setting: play immediately or wait to buffer for maximum clarity or some such language.

Programmers should never take away an offering. :)

The menu button won't let me back out of Netflix on atv4 and the interface sucks.

Netflix on Nvidia Shield is the same as the one on ATV 4 however with Shield, you can scroll up top and there you can select the category, which show a list of category like ATV 3. ATV4 does not have this category icon.

instead of swiping left and right to fast forward and review, you can click left or right to review/fast forward 10 seconds, like old ATV4.

holding down menu also take you to home screen.

Damn, as I feared this feature isn't there on the ATV. The option to play the next episode is there when the previous one finishes, but it *doesn't* cut out the opening credits and recaps - gutted :(

This may vary from show to show. Even though autoplay may always work, some shows seem to "require" the intro/recap to play while other shows skip them.

I moved the Netflix up into the top row on the new Apple TV. At first, it showed the "continue watching" in the left of the now preview list across that top row when on the home screen/main menu when Netflix app was selected.

After awhile of being in and out of the app, and watching some stuff, for some reason that menu changed to showing "Sports Movies" not sure why, nor how, nor how to set it back. Scrolling over to the Apple "movies" and "tv shows" apps, just as before I see Purchased and then Top Movies/TV Shows.

Maybe just because since it first time Netflix can be moved to the top, the app devs have some bugs to work out of this feature.

It is just amazing how horrible many of these tv interfaces are, it's not just Netflix, do any of the designers or programmers even use these apps?

It could be so much better, just what are they thinking?

Thanks for the warning. I originally had a Roku, Fire TV, and Apple TV 3. I kept the Apple TV 3 and got rid of the Roku and Fire TV because of this issue. Apple TV 3 was the only one that started Netflix in Super HD from the beginning. The others did what the new Apple TV is reportedly doing: starting at the lowest bitrate and then you have to wait for the bitrate to ramp up. It was very annoying when watching TV shows as the first few minutes were a pixelated mess.

It's very odd but my videos *are* starting in the highest quality as soon as I click on them. I have like a 40Mb connection, but even so, on the PS4 I would have them start in poor quality then work up to HD over a few seconds. Apart from the not skipping of credits etc, I really like the experience overall, but then I am familiar with the interface, what with the PS3/PS4 having similar for a while now. The controller, and fast response during seeking, makes skipping credits manually pretty painless anyway, so I've cheered up a bit after yesterday's sadness.

I found out last week that you actually can disable the auto-skip functionality of the television intros and recaps. I couldn't stand when I started watching Netflix on a new Smart TV lately that had the universal UI and experienced the change. I chatted in to Netflix support and they disabled it for my account on their end, it's just not a setting you can change through your account settings yet. The person I spoke with said that the option would possibly be coming soon though. Personally I think for the best user experience it should be off by default but others would disagree. But just to let you know since you dislike it as much as I do, it CAN be done by taking a couple of minuets to reach out to Netflix. They will instruct you to log out of your devices and log back in for the changes to take effect.
So, where do they say you can't turn this off yourself? On my account it's right in settings on the website in account settings. Totally confused. When auto play is on, you get whatever 'deleting' you are going to get.

For those who have Hulu also. The app is much easier to navigate compared to the Netflix app. Still clunky at times. But def easier to find stuff in Hulu.
