My main complaint with Netflix is the stupid way of tying resolution with number of streams. I would want higher than 480p, but I would need to pay the two-streams-at-once tier for that? And why does it skip from 480p to 1080? Why is there no 720p plan?

IMHO, basically there should be two options when building a plan:
1. Resolution (480p, 720p, 1080p, 4K)
2. Simultaneous streams

And derive the prices from those two options. Example: Base price, then price X for your resolution choice multiplied by the number of streams.

And while their competitors don't even bother with lower than 1080p (AFAIK), at least Netflix giving us this option is a good thing because not everyone can play even 1080p. Some of us either don't own hardware capable of playing back 1080p (ex: my 2010 Mac mini) and/or internet bandwidth/quotas considerations means 1080p is out of the question (will always be buffering/will run out of data in only a few hours/days worth of watching).

I know I won't have streaming services forever, but I will have those movies forever.
... or at least until the there are license issues and they're stripped from you (it's already happened to some people).

The only way to secure things premaritally is to own them physically. If you don't like the thought of maintaining a player for the media, you can always back them up digitally etc. But physical ownership is the only 100% safe rout.

I’m only going to stay till stranger things and umbrella academy ends, then I’m out!

Do what I do. I allow for two add-on streaming services a month and rotate as necessary to binge. Since I have Amazon Prime it’s always part of my mix. My main rotation consists of that plus a combo of Netflix, HBOMax, Disney+, Hulu and AppleTV+. In the past I’ve had Showtime Anytime (Billions seasons 5 and 6), Peacock (older seasons of Yellowstone), Paramount+ (newer seasons of Yellowstone) in there and next month I’ll be doing AMC+ to watch the last season of Better Call Saul plus whatever else might be binge worthy I’m not aware of on the network that might have come out in the last couple of years.

Multiple other sites are reporting that the ad-supported service will be limited to 480p.
You mean multiple other sites are just speculating or repeating what another site is speculating on.

In an email to The Verge, Netflix spokesperson Kumiko Hidaka said that Bloomberg’s report is “all just speculation at this point.” She said that the company is “still in the early days of deciding how to launch a lower priced, ad supported tier and no decisions have been made.”

Asked to comment, Netflix said the Bloomberg report is “speculation at this point” and that the company hasn’t finalized decisions about pricing or other details for the advertising plan. “We are still in the early days of deciding how to launch a lower priced, ad-supported tier and no decisions have been made,” a spokesperson said.

I highly doubt it will be 1080p as it will cannibalize into other plans. It's such a big jump from 480p in resolution and given the price gap, I would guess the most they offer is 720p - after all, that is their "standard" plan.
There is no 720p standard plan. The standard plan ($15.49 USD) is HD quality. That means higest resolution you get is 1080p.

The premium plan ($19.99 USD) is Ultra HD quality. Highest quality you get is 4K.

The basic plan ($9.99 USD) is 480p resolution.

It's incredible how little so many people value their own time and attention, that anyone would even consider paying around $8 to watch ads when they could spend just a few dollars more per month to skip them.
Watching Netflix itself is already negative valuation of your time.

I probably should run this comment through my daughter first because she seems good at knowing what I should not say :) . But my comment is not meant to sound xenophobic if anyone takes it poorly.

I am dropping Netflix because I monitor ‘what’s new’ through JustWatch<dot>com and all I ever see new that comes out from Netflix is subtitled foreign (non U.S. English) shows. Yes, I know Netflix is international. But I have not been able to watch more than a few hours in months because there is nothing new on there for me that I like. I can’t read subtitles quick enough to keep up with the shows. My wife loves South Korean films on NF but I can’t ‘keep up’.

Interesting. When i had the standard plan, i only ever got 720p with no option to set it any higher. I guess it's another canada thing then.

I jumped ship from Netflix 4+ years ago. I saw the writing on the wall for their content.

I really thought what they were gonna do is raises their prices and then charge the same price they do now for the ad-free version for the ad version. That is America.

I personally will never go back to ads. My time is worth way too much. I hope it fails, but I doubt it will even if you only save a dollar. People are cheap with their time and brain.

Netflix is desd, for price of netflix 4k plan i get disney+ AND hbo max.. not mentioning that nezflix originals are the worst ones recently. Cancelled subscription few months ago and do not plan to return

Netflix hasn't really had anything good for the past few years.

They're still the #1 streamer by customers.
Still waiting for support of your earlier comment: “They’ll charge $7 and you’ll like it” in light of a recent dramatic loss of customers.
