What a s***** deal. Ads “during” the movie? Why would anyone PAY for that?

“Here let me pay you to watch movies, and then you also serve me ads. Perfect! I love ads.”

Since Netflix lets you subscribe by the month, why not cancel and pick it back up when new series of these shows drop?
That is, until Netflix figures out how to require people to sign up for a year of service contract minimum. 🤫

I still think $9.99 is way too expensive for basic 480p streaming, even with Netflix's wide catalog of TV/movies. It should be at least 720p and at a more reasonable price like $7.99. Here's what Netflix should be:

Basic Plan 720p (currently 480p) - 7.99
Standard Plan 1080p - 12.99
Premium Plan 4K - 17.49

Even a slight price decrease like this would give Netflix the edge

one thing replaces another, which inevitably becomes as hated as the original that it replaced--and while most people are too busy complaining about whatever has changed, they don't even realise they're basically back to where they were in the first place (granted, with perhaps a few advantages).
You just described the iPhone 14 pro for me.

Remember when it was $7.99 for the best "plan", and they were loaded with so much critically-acclaimed content, that you literally didn't know what to watch first?

I do.
Pepperidge Farm remembers.

Sure... but only IF you subscribe to EVERY separate streaming service every month. Who does that? :p

At least with streaming you can pick and choose the streaming service(s) you want at any given time. You don't have to subscribe to Netflix and Hulu and Disney and Apple and Peacock and CBS. With no contracts you can come and go as you please.

But with cable... you're stuck paying $80/month for too many channels and you have to use a crappy DVR box with ancient software. Their practice of "bundling" means you're getting 125 channels whether you want them or not.

Don't like sports? Tough! You're paying for eight sports channels! And plenty more channels nobody wants!

There are around 30 pay streaming services available right now. Using your $80/month cable TV figure, it would cost far more to subscribe to EVERY streaming service every month.

Yeah sorry... I didn't think anyone would take my comment literally.

But you did! Thanks!

Maybe I should have said "if you subscribe to 4 or more services..."

Or whatever... I've already spent too much time on this topic.

;)

People have been associating ads with free. I don't know if anybody would buy into paying for ads. Spotify with ads is free. Various Chinese streaming services (weTV, iQiyi) have free tier with ads.

Ad-supported plans from streaming services like Discovery+, HBO Max, Hulu, Paramount+, and Peacock all cost money and have a lot of subscribers. Hulu even states that around 70% of their subscribers are on the ad-supported plan. Ad-supported plans are becoming more popular and there will very likely be more and more streaming services offering that option in the future.

It can’t be 480p. People would not watch a show in 480p show, be interrupted by a 1080p ad, and go back to a 480p show.

If it wasn't for Stranger Things I would not use Netflix at all. That is the one and only show I enjoy on Netflix. And it is my top 5 TV shows of all time. Its a shame it needs to be connected with Netflix. I would rather purchase it and get rid of a monthly subscription.

I can relate. Except for the occasional new movie or series when I am in the mood for one and actually have the time to watch, I mostly rewatch my favourite old sitcoms (which I've already seen thousands of times) during the little "winding down" time I have these days. Most of which I had already bought on DVD and ripped to Plex many years ago anyway (which is also partly the reason why I ditched subscription tv around the same time).
Sitcoms and the old Alfred Hitchcock series!

Firstly.. who are you? Edit: I see I pressed disagree on one of your posts. Ok, fair. However I suggest you do go read your quote from the MR article.

Anyway, macrumors just mentioned that the lowest current plan is 480p. It’s very possible that will also be a thing for the ad-tier.

However all in all it’s still just rumors and speculation. They could change their entire lineup of subscription tiers when they introduce this new one. Maybe in some regions, limiting the resolution makes less sense than in others.

IMO they should decide on one of the following
  • $4.99 for 480p with ads or $6.99 for HD with ads
  • $9.99-11.99 for 1080p no ads
  • $14.99 for 4K no ads
480p is crap and should only be justified with ads to offer lowest possible price. In other words, their $9.99 pricing for 480p and then upselling you to HD is totally out of line compared to their competitors.
4K / Dolby Vision / HDR does look really good but $19.99/month is still pretty crazy.

I’m a brand new cord-cutter, and I am OK with ad-supported tiers. The breaks are still shorter than cable TV and doing a la carte services (again with ads) is still cheaper than cable TV.
