Thought this thread would be jumpin...

hasn't everyone tried this?

I'm so excited to have some progress on it, but the beta is extremely jumpy/choppy on a 1st gen macbook---not sure I could stand to watch a whole movie unless they improved that

This was working very well for a while but twice now when watching a movie the fatal error screen comes up and I have to physically reboot the comp. On the 17in Core Duo MBP with all software completely up to date save for the iChat update from tonight. I have had a hotmail window open simultaneously both times as the only other window and I hope this does not have anything to do with it. Has anyone else experienced this? Is it terribly dangerous for my computer? What is the link to post issues to Netflix?

If this persists I'll have to restrain myself to only streaming on XBOX. Let's just hope we don't get the red circle of death when we do so ...

No issues for me on my 17" Core Duo MBP. Only had a connection problem due to multiple computers on my network.

I have my fingers crossed for a seamless changeover for the NXE. 48 hours and counting.

Netflix/Silverlight/Mac Problem

"Tara Luvs Apple" wrote:
"I am getting an error 8007 message stating I need to enable Silverlight application storage in order to watch this movie. And whenever I right click, it tries to open, but it quits unexpectedly."
I am having the same problem. Actually, control-clicking brings up a box for "Silverlight Preferences" as opposed to the "Silverlight Configuration" option described in the error message. Clicking it produces a "Silverlight preferences quit unexpectedly" notification.
"TomTaylormsft" suggested "Tara.." email him privately but I cannot find Tom's email address (New to forum - sorry if missing something obvious.)
Any help?

The Silverlight team started in the Windows Division but now lives in the Developer Division - it's not a Macintosh-specific product but rather it's a platform-agnostic developer technology. We (Silverlight) spend a lot of time investing in the capabilities and performance of our product across *all* supported platforms, and will continue to do so. The Netflix player looks (and works) great on both my MacBook and my Windows desktop, all the way up to the highest resolution / bitrate video that they offer.

I do understand where this sentiment comes from - as a long-time Apple user, I've also been through the Word 6 / IE for Mac / Windows Media Player days. I think that we are in a very different world now, though, where developers and end users expect the same experience and performance across platforms wherever it makes sense. As a software platform for rich, cross-browser, and cross-platform applications, it would do our customers a disservice to offer something less on OS X.

While I appreciate the fact that someone from Microsoft not only read and responded to this forum, and the time and effort involved in doing so, I have to point out a few things:

1. Saying it lives in the Developer Division, a group I've never heard of, with no track record of Mac development, does not instil me with confidence. It's been hard enough to get Adobe, long-time Mac developer, to finally do something about fixing the performance problems with the Mac version of Flash Player. So now, some group in Microsoft with no previous Mac products, is going to do a better job with their equivalent?

2. How platform-agnostic can it be if there's no non-Windows developer tools? You have to use Expression products (and not Media) or Visual Studio to make content. This wouldn't be so bad (Apple doesn't make Final Cut Pro for Windows) if third-party developers were able to make Silverlight authoring apps, but there is nothing and no sign there ever will be.

2. This:

...developers and end users expect the same experience and performance across platforms wherever it makes sense.

It's qualifiers like this, written in PR language, that leave me cold. All it has to be is that it no longer "makes sense"... in some manner, and we rack up yet another dead Microsoft/Mac product carcass hanging on the wall.

"It no longer makes sense because...."
- "there are important features in Internet Explorer 8 that are not in other browsers, which is holding back both Silverlight and the rich user experience our customers have come to expect..."
- "the many tens of developers producing Silverlight content are screaming for access to the local computer toolbox, and to do so on all platforms would be both technologically and monetarily expensive, and undermine the rich user experience our customers have come to expect..."

Well, you get my point.

unresolvable 8007 error Netflix Silverlight

I have been repeatedly having this 8007 error when using my live streaming feature on Netflix using Silverlight. I've been told that this error typically occurs with Mac users - and, although I am a PC user, I am checking it out with the Mac experts at MacRumors.com.

Initially, when I had the original, non-Silverlight player w/ Netflix - I had NO issue, no timeouts for buffering, lagging internet speed, nothing that I can recall - but, w/i the first month or so of being forced to "upgrade" to the new Silverlight player earlier this year, I had experienced the infamous 8007 Error - relating to an "Isolated Storage" problem.
The screen that pop-up with an 8007 error gives very clear instructions on how to handle the issue - which includes a right mouse click that makes a pop-up box with 3 or 4 tabs appear - and that last tab is the tab that supposedly corrects this storage issue.
I can "click" on all tabs, can select or deselect items in each, also - but when I attempt to open up the last tab, the entire pop-up box disappears. So, obviously, I am unable to mark anything in that box and the issue goes unresolved until I call into Netflix, and, if I am calling during a particular set of hours, they forward me to their "technical specialist" - and a specialist actually goes into my computer and either changes the name of a file or deletes something in my Silverlight folder. This has happened nearly every 6 weeks for the previous year since Silverlight "upgrade".

The week before Christmas, I received my obligatory error, looked into the Silverlight folder myself (I'm tired of having to call Netflix to bother them about such an easy fix) - and I'm thinking that I MIGHT recognize the folder - but I didn't so I touched nothing and called them. The tech guides me as to which folder/file I am to take care of, but the folder isn't there this time - so this is when he looks at my computer via "go-to assist" - and he cannot find the specific file either, but, he reads a previous note on my file and, based on the last fix that a Netflix specialist used, this tech deletes the entire folder and we reinstall the Netflix plugin - but the error still doesn't disappear. Two weeks later, 12 hours on the telephone with either Netflix and then Microsoft (of course they pawned me off on to Microsoft) and it still isn't fixed and the course of action that a Microsoft tech had me take has now created issues with my ability to log into and few my GMail account - can log in, but I cannot actually get into my account to read emails (it processes request but then eventually, after about 6-7 minutes, times out and says that the URL is TOO LONG to process.

One of the Netflix reps mentioned that there is some interaction with Google desktop that causes this error - well, I've never had Google desktop actually installed on this computer (although there was a random unused Google Desktop file embedded in a cluster of items, some Google software package that contained a number of programs ready to install if I chose to do so) - but the program was never installed and the folder was removed (but, I want to clarify this - I DID NOT have the GMail problems until much later, days later once I used this Microsoft Scrubbing tool that the Microsoft Silverlight tech emailed to me to use. I did, however, have this problem with the too long URL a month ago and resetting my internet advanced options remedied it - didn't fix it yesterday after the Microsoft SIlverlight Scrubbing tool fiasco, though).
Has anybody on this forum had problems with the 8007 error (isolated storage) and, if so, how did you resolve the issue? Netflix states that, although Silverlight works fine on my computer with other programs, works beautifully with the test program, too, on the Silverlight trouble-shooting site, and I've even installed a NEW HARD DRIVE (which was one of the guesses that Netflix threw my way - "It's either MS Silverlight or your computer" - even though both are working well together until I attempt to utilize the Netflix plugin...) - but nothing seems to work.

I know that I've added the details here - but I wanted to make sure that people who have experienced this problem knew what the history of the issue before responding and possibly spending a lot of time typing and submitting suggestion that I might have already tried.

Thanks for any ideas about this issue - Google, Netflix Silverlight plugin, etc - what a MESS!

Oh, btw, each time that I've called in the "technical specialists" - those who supposedly handle Silverlight issues have repeatedly claimed to have "NEVER" have heard of this issue - all with the exception of one person - who stated that it occurs so infrequently that it doesn't concern Netflix because of the huge upswing in customer subscription levels now that they have a player that works with Mac users - and, that the few people that they lose as a result of un-resolvable 8007 issues is well worth the other people that they have gained. When I go to the Silverlight site and type in "Netflix 8007" - there is a myriad of posts from users who, more times than not, have only resolved the issue by simply eliminating their Netflix subscription - which is an option that I do not want to take.

Thank you again for any ideas or suggestions -
Signed by a really frustrated Netflix subscriber!
