But with all the advancing technology, and so many more people able to make sophisticated programming, costs ought to be going down, not up.

Nothing to do with Netflix booting subscribers, but I did cancel Netflix today after I don't know how many years of being a subscriber. Just have not watched anything on Netflix in so long I was throwing money away.

Probably to fund their filming studios, staff and actors in all of their own productions. Same for Apple TV, Amazon, and Disney. Basically they are all the "new" Hollywood.
And the entertainment industry is all the better for it. I've seen some nice indie movies recently on these platforms that mainstream Hollywood wouldn't have touched.

they can seriously F off.

I am no longer able to use Netflix on my iPhone and iPad without sending myself a code (which is limited to a certain amount if I am not mistaken) because the stupid Apps claim that I am travelling even though I am at home. I think it is related to having logged into an Android TV in an AirBnB in Sweden in May (I logged out of the TV when we left).

I can only use it on my Apple TV for some reason. One of the reasons to go the legal route used to be "convenience" but clearly that is no longer the case.
Apple TV seems to be immune from Netflix Household restriction as of now. And for other Android / Google TV / WebOS users can follow following method also. Me & my other 3 friends are sharing Netflix Premium (4K + HDR) plan. What we are doing is that we have created a common email address between us. And whoever wants to watch Netflix on TV, can confirm household by accessing that email address. It is costing us 1/4 amount for premium plan. In both my TVs, I have connected Apple TV & Netflix seems to work regardless of household restriction.

I thought there was a limit on how many times you can send yourself a code per month?

This. Seriously, their point of differentiation is the fact that there are no ads. It's crazy that you can pay for ads at a decreased price. No thank you, I'll just watch YouTube lol. They are becoming dish, cable etc. and it's pathetic.

As it stands, we pay for Netflix and Disney+ and my wife and I share Prime which is more for the free shipping as we purchase quite a bit through Amazon. If NF ups their price again here in the US, I'll have no problem discontinuing that service for actual physical media (yes I still buy this). Thinking about it, truthfully, I can't recall the last time I watched something on NF where as I stream YT almost daily with some family/lifestyle/cooking channels my wife and I enjoy and it's already free as is the YTK accounts I manage for my kids. Not a hard choice for us at all.
These days, we have Prime Shopping Edition plan in India which is targeted for users aiming for free shipping benefit. It costs INR 399/year. Regular Prime Membership with Prime Video, Prime Music, E-books & Gaming costs INR 1500/year.
